I'm pretty sure he died. The ending scene with ML walking through the streets in Tokyo is more of a nod to the mystery of who the ML was. Per the show, all records of the secret spy organization operating in Japan were destroyed before the Allied forces entered Tokyo. at the end of the war.
Ep 42 is definitely the peak for me. The confrontation between Ye Degong and the commander - chills.
I might need to amend that statement lol. That scene with Ye Bingying all alone on the runway seeing the multiple planes crashing and then that lone plane being able to land at the airport was so moving. Perfect imagery that amidst such chaos and destruction, there is still hope.
