SMY and SCH as characters existed in 4 different reference before BR even began as a project-a novel, Tales of Dark River (anime), Dashing Youth and The blood of Youth. Except the anime I have no clue of the other 3 resources. I believe SMY and SCH though a part of the DY and TBOY, were not the main characters. The story didn't revolve around them, they were a part of some other characters who played the main role (I have no clue who). BR is a story of these characters and the assassin organisation that they are part of, in-fact end up being the head of. Therefore, in order to make a show on these two characters there could only be two best resources- the novel and the anime (both of which are incomplete at this stage as far as I know). Therefore, it makes a logical sense to make BR more like the anime version or how they are written in the novel. That's why I think for me (who has only seen the anime) it makes more sense to see SMY the way he is in BR because I can easily relate it to his anime self and it holds true for other characters too. I believe this is also the reason why the viewers who have seen these characters in DY and TBOY are kind of struggling to understand why SMY is like he in BR, because they have another reference point to compare (DY and TBOY). I might have done the same if I had seen the other shows who knows. But I am glad have not, because I am way less conflicted hence able to enjoy the show and the character instead of battling to choose which SMY, which SCH, or MYM or BHH makes more sense.

Also SCH was more excited about the gold and monetary treasure, that shows how he has a tendency incline towards greed. And that doesn't sound good at all. I just shared my thoughts. There is no intent to convince that these are the perfect costumes or anything. To be honest I am a newbie in the CDrama world and costumes, especially in costume dramas is what grabbed my attention. So I am one of those who began to watch these show for how beautiful everyone looked. If not for these elaborate costumes in these drama, I may never have hopped on this journey into C Dramas. That's probably the reason costumes have become extravgant in a manner in recent years (like you said), because it has the power to grab audience, at least pull the traffic (rest depends on the entire project) because these shows are no more restricted to China, anyone in the world can. But I also ubderstand because you have seen the same characters in the other two shows and already have an image, definitely leaves a window for your to question a new styling. I do not have that reference so BR is now setting my impression of these characters. It is possible if and when I decide to watch DY or TBOY, i might find them too plain because BR will be my point of reference.

They were never meant for this world but pushed here.
