What??? I've seen the entire anime and read all but the last several mangas (like, only missing maybe 4?). This was very a very faithful if simplified version of the first story arc in Bleach! It's not that common. It does happen, but when an abused person manages to do what she did to get away, they've pretty much broken that. I could see her having an initial cowering moment, but not just continuing to cower. I worked in social services for nearly 25 years so I've some experience. The writers were doing this because it fit their plot rather than fitting the character, in my opinion.

I rather think it's implied that the Navy found out about the FORGED marriage certificate at the very least. But it's entirely UNCLEAR and as I said, makes this the most forced plot point so far in this drama.
