HOW exactly is JiAnn a culprit in ANY sane world??????

I do agree it is fitting punishment, but no, Shin Ae was not as bad as her sister. Hardly saying she was great (although a lot of that was writers committing the sin of changing her character) - Shin Ae was always ambitious, wanting to get out from under the stigma she'd been born into as the daughter of the mistress. She raised her daughter to have her eye on the result rather than the means, and she also was a snob. However, Mi Ae was ALL that and much worse. For one thing, manners DO mean something. Plus there was nothing in Shin Ae's original character (ie what we were shown before Daddy Dearest departed) close to the ruthless disdain for humanity shown consistently by Mi Ae.
The writers failed miserably to show the logical progression from a loving couple to a toxic one where Shin Ae & her hubby were concerned. Now, HE was portrayed consistently as a sociopath thru-out, seemingly charming & decent but really selfish and unconcerned with others. Showing HIM deciding Shin Ae was no longer useful and her realizing this shouldn't have been too hard, but apparently was for this group of writers. Her abrupt change in character was very jarring and inconsistent. She'd been a victim most of her life - she actually married for love, and her advice to her daughter was meant to help Hwa Young obtain her rightful place. I mean, really, that toxic old man (who was ALSO a murderous monster BTW - worse than his son-in-law which is saying a lot!) should have recognized that Shin Ae & her daughter were absolutely the best choice for his company. The other two would drive it into the ground within months even with no outside help! That was fairly nonsensical as well.
In fact, that storyline went haywire when it focused on the old man's will. So much that happened after that, ie the family dynamics, was completely opposite to what had been shown of them previously. It made no sense at all - specifically Shin Ae's behavior & attitudes were very different all of a sudden. This is a fatal flaw in writing - when characters are inconsistent. It's one thing to SHOW how a character changes, logically. But to just suddenly decide that due to the plot, this couple suddenly had to hate each other? Oh, puleeze.
That of course was not my focus in this drama - so although it annoyed me it didn't ruin the drama at all.
But I truly hated the character of Min Ae thru-out, and she deserved much more nastiness than her sister. Period.

No, I doubt that will happen here - she will for a while maybe, but our 2nd lead guy has to get with her. It WILL be annoying, however :(

She's not evil. She's being stupid again, JUST like she was when Ji An first left. She's immature, impulsive and thoughtless. I was NOT surprised when she behaved like this - I just wish someone would slap HER....

Okay, I'm HIGHLY disappointed that the WRONG sister got thrown in jail. Shin Ae was absolutely NOT as bad as Mi Ae!!! That old man was abominable and so was that older sister. The younger one was not even as bad as her daughter. The writers made some bad logical steps there - not that she was an angel but OMG I really hated Hong Mi Ae so much through out!
As for her son, fool tho he was, & selfish, he did NOT have any desire to do anything but live off his money. The idea that he had to work at the chicken joint was humerous, but I'm thinking not terribly realistic.
As for Dol Mok admitting to being J, just, no words. Stupid. Good grief. That was totally over the top moralistic claptrap ~sigh~
However, all in all this was still excellent for it's genre :D

Do you know what's wrong with the death sentence? 1st, it's not universally applied, and 2nd wrongful convictions occur. IF there were set guidelines always followed, and if the only time death sentences were given was when there was not a SHADOW of a doubt, then it would not be so problematic. But meeting those criteria is extremely difficult.

Hmmm - you mean those celebrities who ACTUALLY committed sexual assault or those simply accused of it? Cause at least 2 of those have pretty strong defences ie their ACCUSERS are being prosecuted or have been jailed.
But there's that guy who was filmed (CCTV) inside an elevator kicking his wife yet was still released - the wife I believe went on to commit suicide. And 7 years for murder :0 Although you do know that's the sentence given in AMERICA to that guy who killed a San Francisco mayor & a city official - 7 years. The infamous Twinkie defense :(

I actually love slice of life - not a constant diet but it's refreshing amid all the makjang & detective/crime stuff. Not boring at all so far, just sweet.

Don't agree with you at all - she totally looked the age she was playing (quite frankly I never even thought about it until I saw some of the snarky comments). Late 20s/early 30s? Of COURSE she looks that age! Good grief! Anyone thinking she doesn't has some wildly unrealistic expectations LOL Go look at non-celebrities walking in the streets - sheesh.
The drama did have some problems, but she sure wasn't one of them.

I agree - I was very interested in the hospital ship itself & all the island patients, and I loved the camaraderie (and the love story) among the ship staff - but all the over-the-top stuff? Gangsters, greedy chaebols, clingy ex-GF, father w/alzheimers, that LAST episode w/cancer!!!! - I mean, one or two of these maybe but ALL of them? SO much angst OMG You'd think it was a 50 episode weekend drama!
Yet, I didn't care, cause the base story - that of the ship, it's patients & crew - was so solid :D Plus the scenery, just to die for! So I very much enjoyed it despite some big flaws LOL
HJW - amazing actress! & OMG Min Hyuk w/that baby - that just about killed me, I swear. OMG

The age gap was NOT that noticeable. I am amazed at the number of ageist types commenting here. If nobody TOLD you the ages of these actors, you certainly wouldn't be saying this. It is insane. I am totally disgusted, in fact.
I have some problems with the story, but certainly not with any of the actors.

It works. The sexual torturing of those strikers occurred in 1986 per this episode. She was about 10 when her mom disappeared.

This continues to be a fun drama, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I fail to see why bringing up possible personality failings of any cast members has relevance here.

What is HIS problem tho, thinking he can just force her back to Korea, acting like her finishing grad school isn't important? I mean REALLY????? So maybe she did leave w/that guy, but she enrolled in school and that's a lasting accomplishment. She needs to tell him to take a hike. So annoying.

Surely to all the deities SK has laws against sex w/children, willing or not!!!!! AND that pedophile murdering step-father - couldn't his ex (cause OMG I'm thinking that has to be grounds for divorce in any civilized country) get a protection order against him? Plus in what universe would the legal system allow the two of them in the same hospital, even if they thought SHE was the one who tried to kill him? That's idiotic!

Not taking anything personally. Why would you think otherwise? Also, I'm just reiterating the facts of the case (as much as the public knows) per press releases from the courts, prosecutors, et al. YOU are the one explaining your personal opinion of him. I wonder if you held that opinion before the scandal broke, in plain English.

Five Children is hands down the best long makjang or weekend drama I've seen (& I've seen lots LOL)
