I was all set to rate this one higher near the beginning but it totally flatlines for a good chunk in the middle with far too much filler, we hardly see the leads, and the dialogue is a stuck record. Then the ending neither great or awful. Satisfactory I guess but wasn’t for me. Still giving it a 7 for the main concept and leads acting was fantastic for both of them.
Prior to starting this, I came across complaints from some saying this drama was slow and boring. By principal to my sanity I don’t start dramas until the entire thing is dropped because I’m a binger and always will be. Which then makes it really challenging to avoid all the spoilers and whining online. Honestly it was up against Speed and Love which started strong, even while tolerating Esther being well, Esther. ;) But that show tanked for me at 2/3 and went south FAST, and never really recovered from the trash the writers pulled on the ML. So I opened my mind and threw myself into this drama.
Sadly I began to agree early on the episodes were draggy and slow with too much back history and school stuff and our ML nowhere in sight. In stories you need some kind of interaction between your main protagonists, we are just over here wondering when and then it never happens for like loads of episodes. I didn’t feel like this really took off for me until they finally did, and after that it was wonderful. Sure, it feels like the in your face obnoxious sponsors were the Chinese PV industry lolololol, and clearly theres far too much office business yapping, but the writers kept it mature and conflict’s united instead of dividing and I’ve been desperate for that to finally happen in a cdrama.
A little lengthy, and all the big time gaps were daft because no one aged, barely gave them a new hair style, should have been shorter. Your not convincing me SWLis supposed to be 42 lol, good thing they didn’t show the 16 yo cousin they tried to pass off as a college kid at the age of 32 cos that would have been hilarious 😆😆😆😆😆
Still all things considered this was a genuinely lovely show. Not likely to watch again, but thank you china for staying in this pattern of quality romance plots.
This feels just like the vertical dramas, short and tropey, but most of all because the incessant attacks on the fl are never ending one after the other just like the shorts. However, thankfully the ml has half a brain and wises up quickly and the teamwork that pursues is genius. I’m glad however when it finally wrapped. I feel exhausted.
OK here goes. So much of this show in the beginning was so good. The plot, the racing, the location, the cast. The complexity of their past and current situation. The chemistry between these 2 for the first 15 episodes was absolute fire. And then, not long after, quite predictably it went off the rails, excuse the pun. The writers dipped into tired old trope after another. Editing got choppy and confusing. The plot made zero sense and made us all angry. For a really long time. Too long. Even after the resolution it felt hard to believe that things could be patched up. Plot holes, flashbacks. Just when you are so tempted to let the plane wreck go, theres a pull back, though it never quite goes there. Never quite feels like we returned or improved on the past. I mean don’t get me wrong theres a beautiful relationship here too even in the end. But the intimacy and chemistry is no longer there in all the scenes like it does at the start. Far fewer kisses. Maybe thats the maturity they are going for. Biggest gripe, try keeping tabs on how old they are or what time passed. At some point Mumu says they only dated for a week. Like what? That was the longest week that felt like months of our lives lol. Great show, just wish writers hadn’t reverted to boring old stupid tropes 2/3 of the way in. Like for reals can we keep momentum can we keep it fresh can we keep it real? Can we find a solution to problems WITHOUT forced separation for exhaustingly long periods??? Anyone???!!! He Yu is an eye candy king and as long as you are used to Esther, being well Esther, you’ll be fine. Great pairing.
And, for whoever casted Mike D Angelo - thank you!! So good to see him again!!!
A total gem! Leads deserve the award they won for this drama. After the Potato Lab disappointment for KTO’s comeback (which was stupid and plotless and he was only there for his looks) it was sooooo good to see a Director give him back the kind of role he is capable of. Along with KSJ they produced such a fun, while serious drama. Entertaining and clever. The little girls were constant in the Viki comments whining about it being boring and hating on the plot points, I had to turn them off constantly. Ugh. The key support characters really helped make this show - my favourites being the most adorable comedic Eunuch ever Se Dol, Shin won and Ji Woon. Jin Goo - amazing as the villain. Watch it and allow yourself to go with the flow. Don’t analyze the fantasy elements-it’s pointless. Fantasy are not real life - its not supposed to make sense, but some parts, oh boy when the story progresses into the latter part, you will see how important it is to the plot. Enjoyed!!
You win some you lose some, but come on guys, you can complain about dramas getting too complex and complicated and then you get dished out something we’ve seen and loved in the past, blandish full of cliches and you hate that too. Go figure. Yep this was some weird as ending slash last couple episodes. Did these two dirty. We didn’t need the breakup - really - it’s 2025 and dramas that mirror strength and common sense usually stay on top of the ratings. I’m convinced the reason the ratings are failing here is the way the writers wrapped this up. Of course a sassy take down minus dumb breakup and running away to a farm in the middle of nowhere was a distraction not needed. Plus the accident amnesia was unnecessary too. However what always hets my goat is the draggy as mid show then rushed through multiple plots with time jumps (a few yrs?) you can’t even give us an exact timeline lol. You may as well laugh, pretty sure that was the vibe they were going for. At the end of the day the sister had zero reason to not return once the debt was paid off, esp since the lian sharks seemed to suddenly end up in jail. Some nice parts. Some chemistry at time. But so much silliness and fast unsatisfying ending is the reason I removed a point. But can’t dis the show too much, they did the job to be done. The cameos were fun for minor characters- so thanks for that! Will I watch again? I’m not sure. Maybe bits. Y biggest downside is they should have given us a return to where these two were before the og split, and they never did sadly. That part was fire, but it got silly and unserious.
I started this thinking this is the “When the Phone Rings” of my Christmas this year - I waited to binge that too- but nah - it dropped off too much for that. WTPR is top notch and I rewatched it 4 times already lol. So sad.
Typical immediate romance, no getting to know you just instant love-total cringe. Then sis leads them all along in usual jdramaery male fantasy sweet pure innocent little girl way, and it just gets plain and repetitive. All the guys behaving like no other girl is left on the planst they all must have her to themselves. No clue why this is rated R, but its ridiculous. Its like some 15 yo girl wrote the plot of her dream life where all her idol biases are obsessed with her. Thats exactly this plot!!!
Massive LJH fan, I own most his albums incl solo work and 2pm, and watched everything he has acted in. Literally you can’t bigger fan than me. I preface with that because there is an assumption that ratings are low because of trolls. Look, I’ll never be trolling my guy, so when I say I feel lack luster for Typhoon Family, its my honest opinion. There was a massive amount of chemistry absent in the main leads, wasn’t feeling it at all. Probably not a lack of effort but it didn’t sell, it felt like 2 people acting a role, which was disappointing if I’m honest, because JH knows how to melt concrete.
The villain? A monotonous joke. This started to feel like Itaewon Class, all I could think was I’ve seen this all before. Two thirds of the way through the repetition of bad guy:crisis got tiresome. They didn’t even need the IMF problem at this point, all the issues facing TT were coming from the spoilt rich boy.
First episode was a bit draggy, picked up for a handful of episodes and then turned boring until the end. The biggest pain point for me as a fan, is that he doesn’t even make a ton of shows so you wait forever and then get something like this. I gave this a 6/10.
Probably the least soapy - no toxic - short I’ve ever seen lol. A short drama for sure but could have been full format and would have made the cut. Chefs kiss.
Loved this show but ending felt rushed. why do they always do this. Could have cut some of the stuff in the middle and used more last episode but it is what it is.
