Ah, classic Kdrama...when episodes went beyond 12-16. I remember the good ole days before netflix coming in, buying up all the good scripts and foisting American programming culture onto the industry.
No love triangle that at any point overshadows the plot, not trite or cliche. And I am super opposed to love triangle cliche, so if I'm okay with it, you'll be fine. I promise.
Finished yet another rewatch. Not just because Hu Yi Tian is deliciously handsome, but also because the FL is mature, sensible, adult with real character development, Best of all? Zero tropes or cliches. Fun ride, with strong female lead and a decent plot. So refreshing for a Chinese historically set drama. Absolutely a favourite. And yeah, Hu Yi Tian is gorgeous, which secondarily helps.
I get your idea that gay kids should have role models and positive entertainment to watch, but this BL is hardly…
Look, the idea that 15 year olds won't watch an 18 rating or whatever is for the birds. That said, I frankly detest cutie pie for its deeply unhealthy representation of relationships. My soft spot for Bl high point is I Feel You Linger in the Air, but it's for more nature audiences. This is clearly for tweens.
Look, I've seen a fair few BL loving fan girls make somewhat rude comments about this being a 'fairy-tale' as if it's so low brow. But can I tell folk something? Imagine you are a gay kid like I was, realising you liked boys when 8 years old, and you never even knew that was weird but knew not to mention it. Then imagine you were 13 years old in the high school playground in the UK, and some smart kid who had internet figured out what 'homosexual' and 'heterosexual' meant, and came up to you all as a crowd in the school playground and made a joke about asking us all if we were 'homosexual' or 'heterosexual' - when we didn't even know what the words meant. Then imagine being that gay kid realising you were the abnormal one - the but of that joke born out an education system thriving on forbidding gay representation or education in the early 2000s. So you know what? Same sex representation in fairy-tale matters folks, 'cos some of us grew up and hit 36 wishing all those socially acceptable fairy-tales were not just heternormative. I'm 36, and I lecture in Chinese uni's and have had gay kids come up to me and ask me if they should tell their parents about their sexual orientation, this stuff matters folks, normalisation and soft power representation. It's not a game for gay kids out there, seeking normalisation and acceptance. So just some of you simmer down. You have no idea the importance of this 'trival' tv show stuff, it really matters for many kids who have the chances some of us never had - normalisation and representation, fairy-tale romances not just being for 'normal' straight people. I still remember one kid asking me if she should tell her parents she was gay - I'm British, more lucky than most to be gay - and my advice still haunts me to be honest. I think about what I said to her, and hope it was correct. Some of these critics need to simmer down, and see things from an LGBT friendly perspective, and get out beyond their own damn privilege.
My only big disappointment is that they are making this "European" royal, not a Thai royal. Thailand has such…
Remember the EXTREME sensitivities (and very real legal) limitations about the Thai royals. There is the noblesse oblige laws where you go to jail for unfavourable representations of them, so they NEED to make sure to avoid the politics.
SO much bi#ching here over ships and tenuous pilots. Chaps, give the actors a fu#king chance! Jesus wept, it's ridiculous, we haven't seen anything yet.
"Thoughts people?"The last 5 episodes were rushed, because of this restriction of 40 episodes (the story could…
The only 3 Cdramas I've watched to the end this length were: Blossoms in Adversity (loved it, the ML is a favourite, saw him in that other one handsom siblings, but that was not so good), Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty (so romantic, but the Manchu haircuts aren't the best haha), Joy of Life (season 1 only so far, it was epic) Is this up there in that league? I was considering Love Like the Galaxy: Part 1 and My Heroic Husband
I'm always surprised by the average rating for this, it's easy one of the better BLs. Sure, its smaller scale but the plot is original, tackling real issues and a credible twist well rooted in solid character development. This is one of my favourites, perhaps 2nd only to I feel you linger in the air. How on earth can dross like cutie pie have a higher rating than dna says i love you? I simply don't understand
