They likely cut it down from 21 to 20, feeling that 20 will be sufficient. May help the story to be more compact…
I think that is the main motive of the censorship board in China. In the past, you have Chinese dramas that go into 70 and even 80 episodes. They just keep adding new characters, new sub-plots and those dramas just go on and on.
With new regulations, it is forcing directors to go more for quality than quantity. Of course, producers and directors are also getting smart in playing around the episode limit. If too long, they just split into 2 parts. For sure, we are going to see more and more dramas using this strategy.
That is good! You do not need to agonize like so many others who came to this page. I can probably watch the entire drama raw. But, I did not read the novel, so I could be missing out on many of the sub-plots.
And lots of friends from US and other places, they don't understand Chinese. Waiting for them to watch with English sub, otherwise I cannot discuss this drama with them here on this page.

I have done some really simple calculations. Originally, we thought there were 43 episodes in all. Hence, even if it is indeed true that it was cut from 43 to 42, that is only a reduction of 1 episode. Over the base of 43, that is a merely reduction of about 2%. So, hardly anything to be concerned about, even if it had been true that Part 2 was reduced by 1 episode.
We always knew that Part 1 and 2 were closely connected, so the production team always knew what they were doing.

Do not worry too much about this. Most people have been saying that originally Part 1 was supposed to have 30 episodes, and then it got trimmed to 22. Now that we have actually watched Part 1 in the raw, we can see that 22 is actually more than enough.
As a matter of fact, if they did not develop some of the side characters so extensively, even 20 episodes for Part 1 would have been enough.
Some of the side couples' relationships are indeed connected to our main couple of Ji Yunhe and Changyi, but not all.
The synopses of Chinese dramas on mydramalist need to be polished up - a lot of inaccuracies in the stories and…
If you are effectively bilingual, and understand all those Taoist stuff, you can make suggestions to change the synopses. You may need to cite sources, though.
Right below the Synopsis, you will see an icon that says Edit Translation. Click on that, and it will lead you to a screen that allows you to make changes. Try it. It is not very difficult.

Yeah, someone has been floating it around for a long time in twitter, that Part 2 was going to be 21 episodes. All of us just took that to be official.
But, looking at the pace of Part 1, 20 episodes should be more than enough for Part 2.
I feel like Chanyi already suspected that Yunhe wasn't really against him but he's hurt so much but cant deny…
This is the trope they are using, to show that Changyi is torn between both hating and loving Ji Yunhe. But, eventually, when he knows the full story why JYH did what she did, they will be fully in love. This trope will bring both sadness and later, happiness in our viewing.
It doesn’t grab your heart cause they tone down the torture part.
Not exactly. More like have too much of those scenes may well distract us from what they want to focus on, which is romance between Ji Yunhe and Changyi.
I think there is no problem for Allen to act in torture scene. He has done it in One and Only. Here in TBW, we saw that Reba can do torture scenes. She was tortured by both Lin Changlan and Shunde.
I think they just want to tone it down, and highlight romance more.
For instance, in the novel, Lin Haoqin did not have one sided crush on Ji Yunhe. They also added that girl, the fox princess, to have one sided crush on Changyi.
So I think they are using those one sided crushes to show that Ji Yunhe and Changyi will love no one else but each other. They want to highlight this, rather than too much of those torture scenes.
A word of appreciation to those who have posted links which show that TBW Part 1 did really well in China. This is a clear indication that the drama adaptation of the original novel has been a success. Scriptwriter, director, key actors, supporting actors, post production team, etc. all did their job well. Our two lead characters, Ji Yunhe and Changyi, are at the top of character search in Weibo.
And novel readers say Part 2 is going to even better than Part 1, pointing to more domination by TBW on the airwave in China.
While we do not yet have an official note on when the English sub will be out, it does mean that our wait is worth it. If this drama did poorly, we do not even need to wait, but just move on to our next drama.
Part 2 will be shown in China, 4 April, 6 pm Beijing time. It should end before end of April. Hence, we likely do not need to wait beyond April, to get our subs.
I have decided not to go to the MDL page of Part 2, even though I will watch Part 2 raw. It is clear that lack of competency in the Chinese language has compromised our ability to engage in meaningful discussions regarding this drama. Switching back and forth between the two pages is therefore not very productive (for me at least, as my Mandarin/Chinese is not all that great).
So, I will wait here with everyone else, for the English subs, and then we can start some serious and in-depth discussions.
