Nice article. I think more people need to understand the difference between Wuxia and xianxia more. Wuxia is more like...comic book hero's, where the world building is based usually on real Chinese history. People have superhuman strength and abilities but its not like xianxia where magic is a possibility. Xianxia is more like a " lord of the ring" setting, usually based on Chinese lore. Anything possible can happen and the story can take place in whatever setting. The dramas you used are more romance based xianxia. Chinese palladin 2005 was my first xianxia drama, and I think that's more of what xianxia should be these days. Excited cause they are planning on making a remake.
Michelle Chen as Xiao Longnu isn't really bothersome after some eps. Though should've casted like (Sarah) Zhao…
Funny is that Yang Guo had the the most character growth out of all the three protagonist in the tribology in the novel. Honestly, I did not like Chen Kun role as yang guo. His portrayal was written to reflect to much of a Hu Ge's Li Xiao Yao playboy character which was never what Yang Guo was. Yang Guo was never flamboyant, cocky or flirtatious. What made him attractive to the girls was his good heart, reflected in his sense of righteousness and selflessness, even the odds were against him ( louis koo and Andy lau's portrayal were better). Xiao Long Nu character also was butchered. They made her have some kind of" school girl" mentality towarsd yang guo which was just vommit worthy ( and it was not because of michelles chen's look). They never explored her complexity as a character who is suddenly thrust into a world she doesn't understand.
The side stories with the Greats were not needed( they did Hong Qi Gong and Huang Yao Shi dirty). Costume design also did not help in this department. Bright colors were too much and did not reflect the characters.
Then you need to try this one ;D. It's good for beginners, they who never watched Thai dramas, since it's quite…
Lol even without the S/K or revenge genre, I just love the petty villains in lakorn (especially the whiny ex- girlfriend, evil step sister, evil step mother or evil mother-in-law). But I will still enjoy some good& grounded lakorns as well.
Lol been out of the Lakorn scene for years. Need to get back to looking for some gems. K-drama's and C-dramas are just missing the spice and guilty pleasure that lakorn's usually provide.
This movie is based on a novel, after the film was released the writer himself said that the movie met his expectations…
Was the Omnoyoji game also based on the book as well cause they were a lot of other characters that seems to been indpired by some of the yokai's from the game like the butterfly demon, the painter, the Tengu. Also the empress's character seems to have been inspired by Kanna and the Yao Bikuni story arc from the game.
Lol the bl no one asked for. I felt like in this movie everyone except the writers pulled their weight. The choreography, the production, costumes and the set were all on point. The acting was okay. The movie was 2 hours!( The opening scene was 10 minutes. )Their were too many scenes that were way too draggy and that killed the mood. The draggy scenes were filled with way too many monologue (I get they are trying to build character and l but that I think there were other ways of doing that). The plot was interesting but I personally feel it was kind of weak. Again, I think the script team in this movie was probably the only thing that did not pull their weight. Everything else great and blew me away even some of the choreography and special effects. And also, yeah this is definitely based off the game. We'll see how the other yin yang master holds up...
I’m so disappointed!! Does that mean it’s a bad drama ??
The story is never bad, its just these adaptions are just killing them slowly decades after decades. Till this day, I don't think no adaption has ever done these wuxia stories justice. We going to need these adaptions to die out in 20 years, ( and hopefully if we are all alive then) then they should think about making a remake. It needs to have the choreography/cinematic element of Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon and the story telling of Game of Thrones (season 1-6 only of course) in order to truly capture the epic-ness and rawness of the story.
No hate intended, but why do I feel like they just tried to find someone who looked like Liu Yi Fei to play Xiao…
They really do, but my personal opinion is that Liu Fei wasn't my favorite Xiao Long Nu. Carmen Lee 1995 version was the best. I felt like they could have gotten Bai Lu to play her if they was gonna get some carbon copy of the some "past Xiao Long Nu".
What's wuxia/xianxia means? The untamed is my first fantasy c-drama
This isn't really wuxia. Wuxia is totally different from Xianxia. Xianxia is like "fantasy" fantasy. Wuxia is "martial arts on steriods". It would be like comparing LOTR with Marvel/DC.
FIrst onscreen couple i though had the most healthy relationship in drama land. Hu ge and Ariel Lin always have the best character relationship. The characters they played with each other( although only two) always had a healthy relationship and I appreciated that.
I feel bad that this is your first Xian Xia because I personally think its not really what xian xia is. Chinese…
Just skip to ep 10. Honestly, the fist 10 ep just starts building to story. The main point is the eps from 10-30. After that, everything else... idk can just be a little draggy...
Hi! I am trying this out as my first xianxia drama, since it's such a popular classic and I just finished episode…
I feel bad that this is your first Xian Xia because I personally think its not really what xian xia is. Chinese Paladdin 2005( I know I am old school) was my first xian xia drama. I think you would become more invested in those characters better, but it is a little older and the cgi might not be up to date, but honestly I think it still holds up better than this drama. The ost are also on FIRE!>
Love this comparison. Interesting topic. I really did like Jang Ok Jung Queen in Hyeon's portrayal and direction. She was political and that made more sense. Sadly thats the only version of her I watched. I did not want to watch Dong Yi, which was another adaption of these historical figures cause I just could bring myself to demonize Jang Ok Jung.
