Cooking up world-changing ambition

Pretty much everyone in the drama practices over the top acting... but that's what the drama is shooting for.…
There is a deliberate theatrical feel to it, given the 3D setup conveyance of the sets and symmetrical frames in wide angle shots. At one point within the first 6 episodes when four of the cast were intentionally acting awkwardly before they put on an OTT act to share an announcement knowing they were acting badly, I enjoyed the hilarity of breaking certain walls.

Gee... sounds complicated. I haven't finished. Thank you though for the summary.

Remember haters in the beginning dropped the rating from 8.3 to 7.9 in 1 hr? In reality, the score should be 8.4…
More often than not, it's a good thing that the international market doesn't have as much importance as the domestic market. "The Knockout" is one example of this.

I can understand the plot-point of why they wanted to include A-Shui. The primary problem for the characterisation…
Thank you for the explanation, kwanto. Maybe you should be the unofficial mascot for this drama page. How about we get you a tea pet? XD

For people who have watched mandarin dramas for at least 20 years, WoF is refreshing. It has lofty goals that attempt to go beyond the standard xianxia dramas, which bore me. To do such a drama is Herculean, and I definitely appreciate the efforts, especially the opera. I would definitely appreciate finding out which directors or screenwriters have an opera background.

Gui Mudan is the most interesting memorable villain I have come across in historical costume C-dramas. He has depth for a puppet and as an individual, and I will not forget him.

At first, I weighed on the side of all actors and actresses being in this drama, which is why this drama has flaws. I even posted about how I would like to improve A-Shui's role in this drama with examples. They would reduce her screentime, but magnify her impact by at least double.

Today I have finally come to the conclusion that if we had sliced out all the irrelevant "subtle romance" attempts of fanservice in a lousy subplot, this drama would have been a lot better because the structure going forward would easily accommodate characters, their relationships, and the Celestial Realm.

When did Tang Lici ever need to rely on someone's blood much less A-Shui's blood, if we are going to go by the novel? This strikes me as a gimmick to incorporate a barely-there romance for a poorly-written female character, which makes this drama suffer. And she's not a well-received character for a very simple reason: Non-fans of the actress cannot figure out why A-Shui should be in the drama as a character. The role itself doesn't call for a stretch of acting chops, but there are pivotal scenes where they can prove whether they shine or not.

If the only people going on about why there isn't more romance in this drama from a specific actress are the fans of the actress but the performance of the actress isn't lauded by viewers in general, then the actress has failed to make an impact and the fans should question why their actress couldn't leave a memorable impression. That's quite clear across 17,000+ comments on this page. I'm sure it'll be even more apparent in the statistics elsewhere.

Review Egg and Stone
Glad you liked it. Yeah I'm a strong advocate for greater varieties in CDrama. Costume dramas that go hard on…
Thank you for the recs!

At least 1/4 of my MDL friends are mandarin speakers, the most seasoned one having watched C-Ent for more than 35 years. We were having a good laugh at Cheng Yi's cantonese. The fun starts at 25:20 (but the whole show is hilarious):

Title Whispers of Fate Spoiler
Are u talking about ep 39? If yes, the bigger question to me is how ZCJ allowed this to happen when she knows…
That's a very decent interpretation. I also think it is because she is trying to figure out how to go about it. She confesses in episode 39 or 40 to the Empress.

I think I finally figured out why SLH was absent a lot toward the end and that was because I read somewhere that…
Yes. I felt very sorry for him. That was also not beneficial for the drama.

So episode 31 was what Luo Yunxi was talking about when he mentioned Tang Lici loses faith and makes the transition…

Maybe. Maybe not. Firstly, how did Liu Yan know about the tattoo to do on Zhong Chunji? Xifang Tao is definitely…
We love this drama, and we can also see where it can be improved. It's not perfect, but it is very engaging, visually glorious, and a welcome change from most xianxia dramas. Some might joke that we get bead PTSD from the costuming XD

It's fun and enjoyable to have discussions with fellow viewers, because we can each see what someone else might not have thought of and sometimes have crackpot theories. Serious fans mingle with casual viewers. I am not a fan of any of the actors or actresses in this drama, but I admire Luo Yunxi's work ethics and acting, and I also enjoy the work and acting of several actors and actresses who are in this drama.

Furthermore, some of us take things way off-tangent at times otherwise a page can be too serious XD (Sword and Beloved is still heaving with a lot of understandable unhappiness over the drama, but I and some f-listers still managed to have a good laugh by going offtrack on one thread after IQiyi aired all episodes XD )

You can check out the summative post I created because of several of us, after you finish watching :)

Beautiful beautiful drama. Only one episode left for me but worth every second. So many life lessons to be learned.
The final episode will give you a lot to think about :)

And if you ever wonder about the significance of the ending, RBF made a significant 2023 post in the forum discussion section, which I have included in "Group Collective Contributions: Details, trivia, insights across 40 episodes of "Whispers of Fate" : https://kisskh.at/755725-shui-long-yin#comment-24223532

I’m only on episode 13, and yes, I’m enjoying the show… but the girl in red (Hong Gu, I think?) is testing…
There are a large segment of viewers for this drama who aren't interested in romance, especially when this is a drama that aims for new heights of innovation on certain fronts and is centred on the ML whose brotherhood ties he cherishes and especially one person is crucial to his decisions throughout most of this drama.

There are users on this page who already stated this drama could be viewed as no romance, even before WoF aired. Those of us who are honest after finishing the drama will also be frank about romance not being on the top five priorities of this drama and no CP.

The drama does a very-decent job of towing a line to cater to three factions including the no-romance faction, so people can ship whoever they want. Viewers who already knew about any leaked script parts beforehand and/or have read the entire novel will frankly state that this entire drama can be viewed as no romance, one-sided feelings, or some "inklings" of romance if you extensively use your imagination after some scenes.

Those who come here expecting standard romance are going to be very disappointed, especially if they expect a two-way romance. Then you will see grandstanding announcements about how a specific actress or their role has been wronged and should have more screentime. Some of these users who happen to be fans of that actress also go on to crap all over the entire drama, clearly expecting the drama to revolve around their actress. At one point, the actress for Zhong Chunji's role got attacked to unreasonable levels on this page, resulting in a backlash. I had to block one of these extremists for being rude and irritating and using expletives. That one was harassing viewers for having different opinions, such as praising other actresses.

The best description for the romance is that it is so "subtle" that its existence can be questionable, when the biggest problem is the weak characterisation of the role A-Shui.

There is one persistent fan of a certain actress on this page, whereby this fan who stopped at episode 21 more than 2 days ago insists on pushing a romance angle fundamentally misleading to viewers. I have stopped talking to that one after being disgusted by their tactics across multiple posts.

Sorry for this mini-rant. Don't worry about romance. Hope you enjoy WoF!

I don't like what appears to be dishonesty from you and sidestepping the facts I pointed out, including the fact that you obviously haven't watched episodes 34 and 35. You want to persist in insisting on romance between Tang Lici and A-Shui as a CP, then that's intentionally misleading a lot of viewers who will be very disappointed.

I also don't like your condescension.

I will not be engaging with you any further.

Very nice summary! Your words are better than what I could articulate, given I was very sad over those scenes.…
I wish someone would write a poem about it all, or at least about the finale of episode 40. Or about Tang Lici. He helped everyone smile. And it was beautiful to see.
