On Sisyphus: The Myth Apr 1, 2021
This series is okay, and I’ll finish it, but I’m disappointed. Considering the pedigree of the two leads and director in Korean film, this should be better than it is. I fault the writer for a very uneven pace, focus, and purpose.

Superb actor with range and depth born of experience. It’s a delight to watch him.

Precious, adorable, talented young actress loved by millions. I hope as she matures in all ways including her beauty and talent that she has a brilliant lifelong career to delight her fans.

Re-watching a lot of favorites during the pandemic, and this one for the second time after it came out, and lowered my original score of 10 to an 8. I do admire the cast, direction, and storyline over all, but fast-forwarding scenes is never a good sign. I got very tired of the villain, the unnecessary episodes, and Ji Sung’s character not being stronger, sooner. It’s also annoying that a character is surrounded by dead bodies, and the cops never get it. I will watch Ji Sung in any drama, but probably not this one a 3rd time. Still love him, though.

Title Mr. Queen
Loved the cast, writing, direction, cinematography, and music. Beautiful work in integrating the themes and emotions throughout the series—often charming, sometimes terrifying relationships. I also think the production explored the gender shifts with gentle respect for the actors and themes. Only criticism is I think it could have been 16 eps, tighter, a lot of filler and repetitious scenes cut. Love the leads and their supporting cast, with a special shout out to Na In Woo whose role was the most complex in the series. He made me feel every emotion from affection to rage . . . and then he broke my heart. He’s only 26yo with incredible depth and range. I will never forget the amazingly choreographed fight scene at the end and his final scene. And the leads, beloved actors I adore, too, carried this series to Korean high marks and deserve the accolades. Strongly recommend this fine series.

His role in Mr. Queen was the most complex in the series: he made me feel every emotion from affection to rage . . . and then he broke my heart. He’s only 26yo with incredible depth and range. I will never forget the amazingly choreographed fight scene at the end and his final scene. My god this actor is so good. No wonder he was hired to take over the lead in RWTMR—which he literally saved for the cast, company, and fans. He will always be respected for that alone.
On Cha Chung Hwa Mar 15, 2021
Person Cha Chung Hwa
I love her work and agree her performance in Mr. Queen is gold. She can nail her scene with the slightest expression, steal it from the main leads, and I’m laughing out loud. Terrific actress.

Person Chae Seo Eun
She is adorable in Mr. Queen, which I see is her debut. She took a small part and made it her own so that I was watching HER. I hope she has many years of great success.

Thoroughly enjoyed this weekend’s episodes and the wild ride. And I laughed out loud over the French Revolution Lady Liberty salute. Wonderfully clever image and lots of fun.

I have a family member who was bullied in elementary school and junior high by two kids who got others to join in. I tried to talk with one of the dads to make his kid stop. He laughed, told his pissant son, and the bullying intensified. Of course. My relative was attacked, lonely, and sad for years. No one but me, not even the school administrators, ever stepped in to help him when he needed them. By high school, though, when my family member grew into a 6’3” 185# expert in martial arts, they backed the hell off. He never touched them, though he had every reason to retaliate, because he was the good guy all along. Bullying is assault that costs victims enormous pain and leaves life-long scars, so I don’t give a damn about this actor except that he go into counseling. I hope the cast and staff recover, a fine new actor is hired, and they all have a successful drama.

Title Lucid Dream
Everyone did the best they could with a rather sordid story, a thoroughly predictable, cliched, and weak script. And where the heck was the wife during all this. No mom stays “in California” when her son is in trouble. Still, I like the cast.
On The Front Line Mar 4, 2021
The film is by now a classic of Korean cinema, and one of the most important and graphic anti-war films. This one is both brilliant and relentlessly heartbreaking, especially the last 20 minutes. Note that the gifted and beloved actors, Lee Je Hoon of TAXI DRIVER and Shin Ha Kyun of BEYOND EVIL star.
On Space Sweepers Mar 4, 2021
The two leads are of course Korean stars, and are backed by a strong supporting cast. The English speakers are a bit better than usual in Korean films. CGI is pretty good, but storyline is muddled in the beginning and loses its way more than once. But there is a sweet back story that becomes the main and is quite touching in how the major characters respond. I thought that is what gave this film a special quality I enjoyed.

I have a family member who was bullied in school. They are not “just kids”; they are vicious little shits.
On Joint Security Area Feb 22, 2021
I saw it many years ago and then again tonight. Not only does JSA hold up well, it does so because it is the mature masterpiece it has been called and continues to hold its distinction as one of the greatest of Korean films. Others have already commented in detail on the rich direction, story, and acting, so I will just add my voice to the 21 years of praise for this sometimes charming and funny, and other times shocking and heartbreaking film that has the talent and courage to challenge us to see ourselves as brothers and sisters first. (And Song Kang Ho remains as awesome today as he is in this film.)

Title The Suspect
I agree with comments about sometimes sloppy camera work, but otherwise I enjoyed this film for the third time as much as the first. The cast is great, the action superb (Koreans eclipse every other country now, including the States), and Gong Yoo is always one of my favorite actors, no matter what genre he takes on. As an action star, he really is not surpassed by anyone. But it’s that final scene we fall in love with that takes the film to another level. I’ll just stop there.
