Guess we won't see the main characters get proper revenge on the bad guys due to censorship. They either kill…
Novels don't have to go through strict censorship, so evil protagonists can exist. But for dramas, protagonists must be good guys. They can't kill people unless there's a good reason, e.g. self defense.
These recent episodes are the lowest peak in terms or writing. The screenwriter has a low IQ and cannot justify…
Main characters have to be good guys to pass censorship. They are not allowed to kill people except under very specific circumstances. For example, self defense, execution by legal procedure, war, etc. So we won't see Chong Zi kill a lot of people, unless they try to kill her and she retaliates on the spot. Meanwhile, bad guys get to kill whenever they want to, so the whole thing is unfair.
There's no proper explanation as to why none of the guys ever found out that Chong Zi was tortured or went to visit her. In the novel, Qin Ke went to the ice chamber multiple times. That did not happen in the drama. They should've at least showed one of them trying to get to her but fail. At least there is effort being made. But no, all the guys magically disappear when she needs them. And they did a really poor job justifying why LYF couldn't protect her in those 3 years. He was trying to master the spell, I get it, but we also see him walking around in his garden. He couldn't even spare a few minutes to make sure she was okay? Meanwhile, all those evil side characters have been going in and out of the prison cell without anyone finding out. There's no reason why the good guys couldn't have done the same.
Now that I've truly finished the most recent episodes, I am upset re: the writing. I expected better of the writing…
These recent episodes are the lowest peak in terms or writing. The screenwriter has a low IQ and cannot justify the stupid decisions of the characters. And due to censorship, the bad guys are not receiving proper punishment. I really hope the third arc improves. They better not mess up my favorite scenes from the novel, fingers crossed!!๐๐ป
So many holes. I was rooting for this one. If YF has this supernatural connection to CZ, how does he not know…
Guess we won't see the main characters get proper revenge on the bad guys due to censorship. They either kill themselves, or die from trying to kill someone and fail.
Does anyone know if this originally had more than 40 eps and they had to cut back? Or is the editing just that…
I have a feeling they filmed more content than 40 episodes and forcibly cut it down to fit. This results in very rushed scenes, choppy and missing scenes, and no time to present any internal struggles or character monologues that would better justify why ppl make certain decisions. I saw some behind-the-scenes that looked interesting that did not make it into the final cut.
I really enjoyed LYF forcibly making that disgusting disciple Yue Qiao kneel in front of him and the councilor.
It's really sad that due to censorship, they can't have the male lead actually kill these people who have committed crimes. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth seeing all the bad guys live.
I agree. But Luo Yin Fan in the novel was awful. He was a brutal sanctimonious a**h*le. Him falling in love with…
I understand that necessary changes had to be made, like Luo Yin Fan's character, Chong Zi's suffering, etc. But all I'm hoping is for the screenwriter to write it in a way that makes sense. For example, they should've found a better reason why LYF cannot cure his poison. Even "it cannot be cured after the golden time passes" is a better reason than "he threw away the antidote on purpose". The former is due to circumstances, the latter shows stupidity of the character.
Thanks for pointing this out. So for the script-writers "adapting a novel" seems to mean replacing any original…
Yes it's very frustrating. Whenever they try to go rogue on the og novel, plot holes start popping up here and there. It shows that the screenwriter is both uncreative and illogical, and without the help of the source material they cannot write something good. The industry itself also has a huge misunderstanding towards what audiences enjoy and what not. Or maybe they just don't care about the work they're doing and just want to move stuff down the pipeline. Some might say the novel is over 10+ years old and is prone to being old-fashioned, but from what I'm seeing, the screenwriting is even more old-fashioned than the novel.
If censorship is the reason why they cannot keep the darker parts of the story, like the taboo part of the romance or the leads committing real evil, then it's a shame. But they still have the responsibility to take what they have and weave it into an internally logically consistent story that can convince people that's how the story and the characters are supposed to be like. Sadly all they do is hope the audience is lenient enough to accept to bare minimum of everything.
I now have low expectations. All I'm hoping is for them to NOT change the ending of the story. The novel ending was perfect. If they ruin that too, I will descend to madness like the leads๐๐๐
Sloppy writing in recent episodes are a result of deviating from the novel without a good reason: In the novel VS in the drama:
- In the novel, LYF was the one who put CZ into the ice chamber and he intended for her to suffer, so it makes sense that he never went to see her. VS In the drama, he's a good guy, so the reason he never went to see her or protect her properly is very weak. He is reduced into someone who has no intellect, no planning, and fails at tackling any problems. - Novel LYF used his powers to conceal CZ's evil aura, not a lousy necklace that breaks easily. Her identity got exposed due to demon intervention, not because the stupid necklace fell off. - Novel LYF did not drink the poison cure because he never acknowledged his feelings for CZ (master-disciple relationship is taboo in the novel), he was very arrogant and full of himself, to the point he thought the poison was not gonna affect him at all VS Drama LYF knows clearly that he loves CZ and needs to protect her, so debuffing himself by having the heart poison stay is just the stupidest idea ever. - In the novel, master-disciple relationship is taboo, so the leads have a hard time confessing their feelings to each other. In the drama, they also have a hard time confessing, but for the most nonsensical reasons like heart poison, misunderstandings, bad timing, lack of communication, not explaining oneself properly, etc.
They don't have to follow the novel always, but please have it make sense. Don't remove important contexts without finding reasonable replacements for them.
I have to say that you hit the spot with this review. You described your observations so well that for a moment…
I'm glad you felt the same! The story had sooooo much potential that just didn't live up to its fullest because of the amateur directing, illogical writing and in-cohesive editing. Most of the good points about the drama I mentioned are from the og novel. I doubt the production team understood their source material enough to transcribe it on to the screen. They just treated it like some pipeline work.
Are these immortals intellectually disabled or what? She has no evidence she didn't murder Fairy Zhou= GuiltWhat…
It's funny how, in such a big sect formed by thousand year olds, there's not even a legal system to handle these things. People can just accuse someone and they will be executed without even going through a court. "Innocent until proven guilty", have they ever heard of that?
Min Yunzhong has crazy double standards. When someone tries to punish someone, he's like "we shouldn't do lynching", but when it comes to Chong Zi, he can just kill her without question? And someone like this gets to be the head of the sect??? There's no system at all.
Once again YF is going the gothic stupid route.[looks at pills to rid himself of heart poison] Nay! Chong Zi is…
โDude has had it and needs to get laid.โ LOOOOOL Don't worry, he will๐๐๐
"The first person she will see is him." Yeah right. His biggest mistake is making all these promises and never being able to follow through. Same thing for "I will always protect you". Chong Zi needs to protect herself.
https://youtu.be/6otO5f9Bukw This video chat of them is so funny ๐
Oh yeah I watched this live too. It was really fun watching them compete with one another the exclusive things they've done with Chong Zi, haha. They also spoiled some of the plot.
(Hopefully I don't have to though)
