I like your open-minded understanding towards his actions. He's a morally gray character that some would find questionable. The way he treats Chong Zi is not entirely healthy, but you're right that it shows his love for her, at least at this moment. I'm not sure how close they will follow the novel though, because at some point his actions start to gear towards satisfying his own desire for the FL rather than for her good. Love is not always about thinking for the other person, it's sometimes self-serving, and his character is an embodiment of this idea.

But because of her, he started to have desires, which in the immortal world is considered shameful. A high immortal growing back his human desires due to love - I find this to be romantic.

She does. Wen Zi's personality is pretty different from Chong Zi. You can start to see it on ep.15. She changes even more after she turns evil. It's like she has three different personalities in the show, although it's all the same soul.
