I actually like that she has more chemistry with the demon clan. It goes well with the story. She has a lot of empathy and can understand that even demons can be good people. This puts her at odds with the immortal clan's rigidity and hypocrisy, which makes the story internally consistent.

The demon king I was referring to is Wang Yue. He is actually the demon god, the last god in the world, so he has powers to make the two leads not die. Currently, the story is at around 40% into the book. We're going to enter FL's second life arc on Monday.

People hate the show because they don't like FL's acting and characterization. Imo it follows pretty closely to the book, and regardless of whether she is liked or not, at least the production team was respectful towards the source material, and I have to give them that. Another thing people don't like about this drama is that it has an old-fashioned story. But then, the book is an old book that was published over 10 years ago. What do they expect? The drama already modernized the story by making the ML more caring and reasonable towards the FL. He wasn't a jerk like Bai Zi Hua was in Journey of Flower, which is a drama they keep comparing to this one due to the similarities. I think the production team did as well as they could with what they had.

I read the novel so I can confirm, the drama follows very closely to the novel. It is 90% similar, with the main difference being the ML's personality. Drama ML is a lot warmer and openly affectionate compared to novel ML. Novel ML is a lot more colder and serious (think Bai Zi Hua in JOF but worse). They changed it to make him more likeable and imo it's a great change.

I've read the novel, and I don't think Chong Zi's character in the drama is that different from the novel. I think she's more bratty in the drama version, but she was also described as "cute, young, with a round face, and with clear white and black eyes" and often does aegyo in the book. That is not too different from in the drama. The author deliberately contrasts her personality with her second life, where she is much more calm, composed and cautious (but she still does aegyo and breaks rules even in her second life, so in principle she is still her).

So the FL lost her body and her soul became one with the sword (the same situation as Wan Jie). She gained enormous power from it, enough to open the gate for the demons to come out and destroy the world, but the downside was that if the plan failed, she would eventually die once the sword's powers ran out (since she doesn't have a body anymore). She still decides to betray the demon king and not proceed with destroying the world, at the cost of her own life. The demon king says he can grant her one wish, but she uses that wish to repair the bridge in the immortal realm instead of wishing for her life to be saved. The demon king offers her to follow him into the demon gate, so she doesn't have to die and their souls can live there forever, but the male lead does not want her to leave him. He kills his own body in an attempt to die with her, but the demon king shows mercy and allows them to both stay alive inside a sword. They live in the sword tgt as a couple, and occasionally they come out to have dates, but they can't leave the sword for a long time. Later on, they cultivate and get new bodies.

For sure. He clearly loves his disciple SOOO much and he tries to mask that with his rationality but it's not convincing at all. He clearly wants to keep CZ by his side forever. Officially, in order to protect her and the world of coz. But unofficially, we all know it's because he wants her. He can deny it however he wants, but he's never going to escape from his feelings and desires.

Well trust me, Chinese viewers hate it just as much. They share your sentiment. It's the writers and the directors that keep pumping out these kinds of FLs. Nobody understands why. Strong FLs are much more marketable. They get super popular every time. Not sure why there aren't more of them.

Love and Destiny is my favorite xianxia drama of all time!! I second you on The Blue Whisper. The leads had zero chemistry. I blinked and they fell in love. I was like... Why? When? Ancient Love Poetry broke my heart with how they treated the Hou Chi and Qing Mu couple. It was a really good watch though. The other ones you said were also phenomenal.

The story is about a girl who has evil miasma in her body since birth. She is fated to become a demon and harm the three realms. She is saved by Chu Bu Fu, an immortal, and he encourages her to go cultivate into an immortal. She tries to enter the immortal sect, but they don't accept her because of her evil miasma. The ML, however, accepts her as his only disciple and showers her with love. He restricts her freedom in order to protect her, but she is rebellious and does not follow the rules. In comes several boys who have a crush on her, but she loves her master. They cannot acknowledge their feelings because they are master and disciple. Eventually, the FL meets the immortal who once saved her. He has become a demon, but has a hidden good heart. She tries to help him, but gets in trouble due to some evil people's scheming. The immortal elders think she is evil and want to kill her, her master tries to save her but does not succeed. He ends up killing her with his own hands. FL does not die and reincarnates into a new identity. She does not have memories of the past. She meets her master again and her master accepts her as a disciple again. Master tries to protect her better this time. Unfortunately, her identity is exposed and she is harmed again. She becomes evil after regaining her memories. The master realizes he loves her, but cannot stop her from turning evil. The FL loses her body and her soul lives in a sword. In the end, the FL betrays the demon tribe and saves the world, but she will die because she doesn't have a body anymore. It turns out she was a good person to the end. The master is full of regret for not believing her. He decides to kill his own body too so he can live in the sword with her. They both don't die because the demon king has mercy and lets them live happily ever after.

I think the reason why WJ has the most chemistry with the FL is precisely because they are not romantically involved. It's kind of like in Journey of Flower, Hua Qian Gu and Sha Qian Mo's sisterly bond. Just a simple, endearing, family-like relationship.

Yeah this is also the first xianxia I could watch and continue in a while. I couldn't get into The Blue Whisper, Immortal Samsara or Song of the Moon. Last good ones I watched were LBFAD and ALP too.

FL in her second life is a bit more calm and composed than in her first life, although she still does aegyo to her master. She then becomes even more mature and fierce after turning evil. We'll see her change but it's more gradual.

I love how close this adaptation is to the novel. The dialogues, the reenactment of all those key scenes... It's like my favorite novel came to life. They changed the personality of the ML to be a lot warmer and affectionate, which is a very good decision, otherwise ML would be a worse version of Bai Zi Hua from JOF, but now he is super appealing. I also appreciate the sheer amount of actors they casted to take on all those roles, instead of trying to simplify things to save budget. The story has so many characters and they brought all of them to life. They really respect the original and that doesn't happen all the time in c-dramaland.

She looks different after being reincarnated and born as a different person. The novel describes the first life her as someone who is "cute, round faced, with big round innocent eyes". And then the second life her is "calm and composed, with long eyes and eyelashes, a beautiful girl with sex appeal". They will both still be played by the same actress, but differentiated with makeup.
