I haven’t read the manga but I did watch the anime and I was so impressed with how the Chinese adaptation followed it! I guess the only thing that bothered me was how old the actors were. My casual watcher of a friend said they wouldn’t even pass as college students LMAOOO. I know it’s highly unlikely but I’m still lowkey hoping for a season two for the nationals arc. The drama really made me feel like a proud momma who wants to see her children’s journey until the end.

And yes, agree to everything you said about Chinese sports dramas!

OMG, yes. Someone mentioned the Prince of Tennis! Overcoming a slump, forming friendships, and rediscovering one’s love for the sports - that drama certainly gave me a rollercoaster of emotions. One of my favorites.

And I very much agree with you about China having some of the best sports drama! Their dramas truly know how to build the friendship and teamwork up, highlight one’s self growth, and instill nationalism. Even their e-Sports dramas (ex. Go Go Squid) managed to make me cry!

I am no sports fan nor do I have any hint of athleticism in my body. However, I am very much in love with sports dramas when I do watch them. Stories that focus on self growth (ex. improving, overcoming a slump), friendship, teamwork, and hardwork, or even nationalism (prevalent in Chinese sports dramas) has a knack of pulling my heartstrings. Now, I won’t be a hypocrite and say that protagonists inspire me to start learning some sports because I’ve never applied the positivity and motivation these dramas have after finishing them. What they do give me is a sense of fulfillment. Just like a proud mother who is watching her child be the best version of themselves. It’s a beautiful feeling. I really hope sports dramas, especially those with underdogs as the main characters and those with no romance, would be more appreciated. So yes, thank you for this article!

Since the recommendations here are purely Korean dramas, I highly suggest some of my favorites:
- The Prince of Tennis (tennis)
- Project S: SPIKE! (volleyball)
- Project S: Skate Our Souls (skateboarding)

Prince of Tennis is the 2019 Chinese adaptation of the manga of the same name. For the Project S series from Thailand, it also has two other stories called Side by Side (badminton) and Shoot! I Love You (archery). These dramas may be lacking in romance but they are overflowing with love - let it be for their friends, family, or for the sports.

I’m almost at the end yet I still keep replaying one particular scene in episode 3!

The two leads ended up together and got married. Unfortunately, the female lead still died because of her heart disease.

In the epilogue, the male lead was still having difficulty in coping up with grief. During her first death anniversary, he found a video tape that she filmed for him. At one point in the video message, she was questioning faith, asking why the two of them can’t just be together. That line really hit the male lead.

At the very last line of the book, he took his own life to end his pain and to be with her.

The movie changed some of the story since the ending of the book was.... unexpected and... wasn't fitting for a mainstream romcom. The original didn't have a past and a present setting or even the 2010s couple.

I still haven’t caught up with all subbed episodes so I don’t have any solid theories, but dramas set in earlier dates usually mean a time skip! Anything can happen before and during that period. 2009 is more than a decade ago after all.

I get so nervous every time I remember that the setting of the drama is 2009 based on their calendars ;_;

He’s doing sooooo well as the quirky second male lead in the Japanese remake of She Was Pretty! His character is well-loved in the original (played by Siwon) so I didn’t know what to expect with his portrayal, but he’s killing it! Very different from his Adachi in Cherry Magic.

Romance (in fact, a well-done love triangle) aside, Light on Me was the ultimate high school drama. Wanting to feel a sense of belonging, relying on external validation, experiencing unrequited love, and forming a friendship that will last a lifetime—it really did its job in showing how high school can be confusing, chaotic, fun, and memorable in one’s life.

A wise man once said, “They had us in the first half, I’m not gonna lie.”
