Wait that's actually really good! Most idol dramas don't usually get above 7.
SWL runs his own studio now, he's not tied to any agency. But his hit dramas Go Ahead and Find Yourself are also modern dramas and he's known for those, so yeah he suits those and I highly recommend Go Ahead.

He is often coined as the Modern dramas 现偶之神 (male god of modern dramas because of how he fits the genre and good with all the relationship dating scenes) by cnetizens. I think it was also probably why Gu Man specifically picked him as the male lead. His modern dramas are quite famous in China.

Yep Untamed is also another example of idol dramas.

Well, the ML also has a large fanbase due to hit dramas Go Ahead and Find Yourself (Works he did when he was 18~21 y.o, he's now 26), which accounts to his instagram followers of 1.9M. But he was kinda on hiatus for the past few years with less works being shown due to legal dispute with his past company.

Idol dramas this term actually comes from 'Taiwan idol dramas' years where young and pretty cast lead dramas, it may or may not have huge fanbases as there's always some rookie leads, eg: F4 Taiwan version were all rookies but the drama Meteor Garden became a hit. Then China idol drama scene caught up, with less idol dramas coming from Taiwan but more from China these years.

got more than I would have thought tbh.
I feel it's not rushed at all, they had a lot of happily ever after scenes than the regular dramas imo.

Agree! There were unnecessary scenes and happenings in the novel that were treated better in the drama. I like…
I actually found the 2nd part of novel kinda bland, the drama is much better with all these changes, I was worried at first if they follow true to the novel for 2nd half, but I'm glad they reworked on the unnecessary happenings. There's much more depth and coverage of the leads' family members, I enjoyed the drama's changes as compared to novel.

As a fan of Gu Man, i'm very pleased at the changes she made to the drama as compared to novel. Many things that seem ugh or out of character were deleted and reworked to be better imo.

I love that the bad ones got their own taste of medicine.
ZX embroiled in rumors, making him experience what XG did in uni.
XG's dad illness that led to partial loss of hearing, making him suffer the same fate as LYS (from losing his hand's mobility)
The mistress and her daughter's ending are satisfying.

I believe in karma!!

I also like that Gu Man deleted the scene of where Ye Rong dated Xing Jie in the novel and then later trying to shift blame to XG when she outed his cheating to his grandpa, tarnishing his image.

No extra scenes for YR, yes! In the novel I felt ZX in this portion (where he meets XG with YR and admitedly let her shift blame to XG feels a bit out of character ) so I'm glad it's gone.

Finally, our YS and XG's happy ending and daily life after wedding shown - it's such a rare thing in dramas as often the ending only show briefly the leads' wedding or their wedding picture, and not life after happily ever after.

I got cavities watching these two.

Great script from Gu Man, I thought 36 episodes was too long and was afraid they put too much filler but Gu Man's held it well. There's some slow pace scenes but most of the time, the scenes are meaningful imo.

My only gripe is director Chen Zhou Fei and producer Yang Xiao Pei, their notorious sense of cinematography and aesthetic is apparent in this drama. Well, there's some good scenes but most of the time, the lighting is damn flat and make leads facial complexion look pale and skin harsh. SWL's beauty is 50% in this drama compared to Seven Relics and his other dramas imo :p This director's best scenes are usually night time because there's no god damn white light used, lols.

If you compare cinematography of Chen Zhou Fei as compared to other modern dramas like The Best Thing or even dramas directed by Cat Tree, you'll notice the difference. His lighting and cinematography is bleh. What kept me going is leads and Gu Man's script.

ZX too, he looks pale most of the time. I secretly wish for Chen Zhou Fei and Yang Xiao Pei to collab with celebs I dislike lols.

They should really thank the leads and Gu Man's script making this show good.

From my understanding -- and I'm only making an observation, not trying to throw dirty water on anyone -- if someone…
It's quite well-known among fans that he doesn't smoke though (watched Bionic life BTS where he needs director to teach him how to hold lighter and smoke). He instead like to eat sweets. Also there's no lipstick except lipbalm i believe, that's just the filter colours make him look like he has coloured lips lols. He does have darker lips naturally.

I can't hate Zhuang Xu, because his mistakes are the kind of human errors that are common: doubting himself, trusting…
I think Zhuang Xu is a good person when it comes to others except for Xi Guang. With Ye Rong, he believes in her first, with Lin Yusen, he respects him, with his colleagues, he treats them well. But with Xi Guang, he has 0 trust, he believes in rumors without asking her first, he just assumes that she's the "princess type" when he sees her wearing uncomfortable pretty shoes, without the thought of how it will hurt and offer to go back by car even though he carries cash, just because he wants to be with her longer, they walk by feet, there's no consideration here.

Even when he helped her consolidate materials for her essay, it's for him to "apologize" for his mistake in wronging her. He didn't gave her any formal apology at all. When he rushed to help her submit her resume, it's because he wants to be near her that's why he hopes she works in Shanghai. All in all, all the kind actions he did for her were mostly for himself, he puts himself first before her. When she was wronged, he didn't even chase to ask her and when she texted him to apologize after her confession, he didn't reply.

Later in the novel there's a confrontation between Xi Guang and Zhuang Xu, and i think XG makes very good points that ZX doesn't like her from his actions, he likes his ego the most. That's the red flag part. Whats the point of being a good person but unable to treat the person you like well?

I don't think he's a bad person, but as a love interest for Xi Guang, he's definitely a red flag.

The very short skirts I see the female leads wear in Chinese office dramas are so cute! I wonder if those are…
I'm not sure why is it not acceptable, it depends on the workplace, some are quite casual, I wear skorts to work everyday, in Singapore.

This is mango gala and these two have an upcoming drama Love for you in mango platform, the gala was confirmed in August, much earlier before Shine on Me set to broadcast, so it's scheduled earlier than this drama's broadcast confirmation. I see no wrong with these actor and actresses except for some cp fans being sensitive.

my chinese followers Said me on instagram that ZUHANG XU is liked in china it’s why he has a lot of screen time
I feel they might want to have his colleague as his end pairing though. Most of the discussion is this actor looks good off-screen and not so good on-screen, probably also partly this director doesn't know what he's doing, most of the time cinematography of this show falls flat, sighs. He does have a more idol-look imo and he looks much better in his douyin.

I read chinese and lurk on weibo, there's a lot of discussion about this character since he's controversial, but most are negative and annoyance. There's of course people who like his character because they prefer imperfect character but they're the minority.

ZX has lots of screen time because there's 36 episodes, need filler to flesh out the episodes and the actor who plays him is an artist under this drama's producer Yang Xiao Pei so it's not surprising he gets more push.

For me, I'm fine with imperfect character, example Miles Wei character in Flourished Peony, I could feel pity for him despite his villain character. However, I think this actor has a very dead-pan face that I don't feel much for him. His best acting so far was when he cut off ties with Ye Rong imo. If not he's pretty stiff usually.

Hmmm, "Shining for One Thing" is one of her famous work in China. Internationally, she may not be as well known. But in terms of work, her "Shining for One thing" is much more well-known than Miles Wei's works in China.

I finally saw episode 11 and expected some infuriating wishy-washiness and emotional cheating from both leads…
I honestly feel the fuss some people are making is too big. We don't want perfect one-dimensional characters, it's the realistic-ness of this drama that makes it great! Besides, male lead is pretty clear on his stance about that girl. They handle the entire thing very maturely

My favorite drama couple in recent years or maybe the last decade. I feel a healthy relationship is where both are on equal footing, mindset and help each other grow to be better people. Also companionship when one is down. Their chemistry is off the roof. Adult romance is way too delicious, the portrayal of workplace scenes is also very realistic. Overall I feel this deserves a 9 out of 10. Coming from someone whose last 9 score for a drama was a 2020 drama, lols.
