The story is a 1st person narrative from the FL's POV. 98% of the novel takes place at the inn with 3-4 occasional flashbacks to FL and her lover. She is quite ugly, but very capable in her duties. Works as the secretary to company's president (the old man). He would have proposed to her, but he's no longer able to have children plus the fire incident at the inn happened where she later fakes her suicide. After her "death" she disguises herself as an old woman, wife of family friend who knows the president and comes back to the inn to take her revenge. Her lover only appears in her flashbacks and towards the end of the novel. He and the inn's hostess were the one who strangled and set fire to the room she was in. The inn's hostess was the president's lover (he was never going to marry her) and jealous of FL plus she wanted a part of the inheritance. She approached FL's lover and came up with plan. FL's lover kills the real son (his friend) along with his father.

This caller disguised his/her voice right? I wonder who could know about her. Watched 4th ep raw, so will have to wait till later when I can catch it with Viets subs. Don't recall such a character in the novel...

Will see how the drama differs from the novel (read it last summer, but going to reread it this weekend when I stop by my local library). Appreciate the setup in the 1st 3 episodes. Upon first reading the novel, I felt the characters were 1 dimensional especially that of the FL's lover until it is explained at the end. The drama helps alot to fill in, giving more background into the individuals.

1. He's not in love with her, I believe he actually hates/dislikes her.
2. She would eventually find out he isn't who he is.

He needed his friend dead. They already thought he was the 1 they were looking for because of the mistaken DNA. So he made it look like his friend was some unknown person who set fire and died with FL. Gonna have to recheck novel out from my local library--been over a yr since I read it.

In the novel, ML basically posed as his friend...she fell in love with the image he projected thru words/interaction. The first fire was a setup by him, with his friend dying in the fire in his place. She didn't figure this till the towards the end (or maybe she already had an idea) She set the 2nd fire for him and herself as the man she loves (what he pretended to be) never existed

you're right, he did say it looks very familiar then. But just how recently was the monk there, because his brother's master was surprised when he saw it too. According to Long Hu Mountain sect leader, the monk is a young person though. And he came with a young girl companion to Long Hu Mountain just several days prior to XFN's arrival. Even mentioned which temple originated from. And the monk drew a picture of himself to make his girl companion happy.

I can only think he must have met this young monk during his 3yrs journey for him to say the picture looks so familiar.

XFN when he saw the drawing of a monk at Wudi city mentions he has seen it before is referring to the same drawing on the wall at Long Hu Mountain. The monk and his young girl companion had been at both places.

Have you wondered why XFN chose Wudi city? To those who ask, he tells them its to retrieve Old Huang's case of swords. Some don't actually believe that's the real reason. It took the strategist and Father to admit in their conversation that Wudi city is too far away for them to be able to send someone in time. And who in the capital is he colluding with? XFN is definitely good at projecting a certain image of himself for others. There was the scene when Shu Xiu pretended to be the lost princess of Chu and XFN pointed out a mistake in her performance.

His father certainly didn't know what he was planning when the strategist handed him the written observations of his son's current journey. That's why the go board was a mess because even the strategist is unsure what will the outcome be.
