Finished Great Expectations yesterday and it definitely had Charles Dickens' trademark birth secret and it's-a-small-world/fates-are-intertwined elements. As usual Ralph Fiennes picked the weirdest character to portray. But at last here, he's the unlikely hero and imo likable compared to the other characters hes ever portrayed. He's played the villain so much it's surprising to see him as the good guy (or at least trying to be good and atoning for the bad that he has done before).

The other day you mentioned better acted adaptations and I was thinking about that. Out of those adaptations, which one/s do you think are better versions? I think I'll check one out for comparison.

I'm watching Jane Eyre 06 version as of the moment. I think I need to re-read the book because I fairly remember the characters in it but besides the main pair, Grace Poole struck an impression to me the most.

Lee Pace has incredible screen presence! His acting is superb and very magnetic (so I can definitely see why you like him very much)! I particularly liked how Thranduil and Thorin retorted at each other. Both of them commanded authority by their voice and stance.

What throne room? XD I'm sorry I was too absorbed at the way he looked that I didn't notice everything else. XD The bridge leading to his castle was beautifully done though, and after that when he reappeared with the elk-horn like crown of his, his thick dark eyebrows, translucent blue eyes and long platinum blonde hair--I was just awestruck. XD Tell me there's such a person in real life! Q___Q

I can see there were LOTS of adaptations! I have to discover why they like to remake it so much! Off I go! :D

She lived 'til 81 and he was like 42, I think. And yeah, the old English papers didn't mention about a bullet grazing the Prince only that he pulled the Queen down when she stood up and pinned the her down when the assassin pulled out a second gun. But still--that was asdfghjkl!

I had nothing to report yesterday only that I had finally finished Desolation of Smaug. And took a peek at Great Expectations (2012) and its plot summary from wiki. This was the particular installment that you were talking about, right? I'm going to watch it today. :)

Haha! I was about to say that when I remembered the Queen had guidance from the Prince during her reign so she didn't exactly wear the pants either. He is the perfect archetype: great spouse, sound business/political partner, attentive urse XD, dad and disciplinarian, tall-dark-and-handsome and a genuine prince at that! What more could a queen ask for? XD

Yes, I must have expected too much for a film to cover her life comprehensively. They picked some highlights and focused more on their romance while showing the politics at the side but barely scratching surface.

I read bits about Prince Albert and made a rather cute discovery: he managed the nursery for all of their 9 children. :D Pretty much a hands-on dad--that kind is hard to find.

Perhaps I was expecting too much but I wished they showed the realization of the reforms that Victoria pushed and is supposedly known for (with the help and support of her husband, of course).

I was also expecting more of the English people loving their monarch because she was described as such and how the people were reluctant to give their blessing to Prince Albert.

Her attempted assassinations were interesting and in her lifetime there were 7, all of which she escaped unscathed and where three of the perpetrators were found to be crazy people!

Hahaha~! XD Yes, it's not fair! I wish I lived like your brother. I love travelling and walking/hiking...a lot. :D

They say Mrs. Gaskell's most famous work is Cranford. I haven't taken a peek at it yet, but I'll give it a go if I have more time. I appreciate how she wrote about the delicate side of Mrs. Hale; I think the woman wouldn't be fit for anywhere except London. And now I'm imagining Margaret keeping a cheerful disposition while trying to capture what is going on between her parents. For now, I can connect with her because, like her, I observe people and their interaction.

I've finished The Young Victoria just a bit while ago and I liked the camera work, the grandeur of the palaces, the architecture and the paintings. Emily Blunt made a pretty Victoria and Rupert Friend was certainly a handsome Albert.

Part 2 coming up! :D

Oh! Good for you! Out here, the weather is humid, the sun is beginning to scorch and the accompanying wind is already warm--no more cold air from the north and summer is almost upon us.

Yes, all is fine now. Though I think I'll feel lonely after my sister flies off tomorrow to the islands for her 6-month moonlighting. I hope we can save enough money to visit her there, as the beaches and the islands there are breathtaking!

So far, I love the detailed description of the characters and their musings. On film, we don't get that; we don't really get to know what's on their minds and sometimes actions can only convey so much. I'm still at episode 3. But since I'm done for today's work, I'm gonna read some more. :)

Oh gawd. Our isp was down the whole day yesterday and I only had chance to check whether the connection was secure last night. -__- Had a tiring day yesterday and am in need of a good dose of dramas and movies.

I'd probably keep those two in my imaginary English drama PTW XD but for now I'll start on The Young Victoria today, read some more N&S while doing laundry (hah) and probably watch one or two episodes of the C-dramas I've been so neglecting.

Hope your weekend is better than mine. ;)

I will look for The Young Victoria right away! I see Rupert Friend is Prince Albert! He made a better George Wickham than the other one in the 1995 version. Wickham is supposed to be better-looking than Darcy (at least in my mind though).

While I was browsing some of the BBC adaptations of classic lit I came across a 2007 adaptation of Persuasion and was wondering if you've ever seen it and if you did, what was your opinion of it. Also I've got a recommendation for Northanger Abbey--have you seen that one yet?

Omo omo omo! We have so many things in common! :D But between me and you, I think you have a better chance of getting taller...(and to think I really googled that! XD)

I think I'll start with The Fall. Haha! I can't resist a good fantasy story!

Augh, my comment posted when I wasn't finished yet and it even double-posted!

I wanted to say that I might follow watching his movies that way. Though I see The Fall has a fantasy premise (a genre I can't resist) and its miles apart from Soldier's Girl in terms of wholesomeness. ;)

He really looks androgynous in The Hobbit. If he didn't have that voice, he'd pass for a woman! Thranduil is even more beautiful than his character in Soldier's Girl! :D

No, I haven't yet and I was actually waiting for you to mention an adaptation so I can look into it. :D It's okay if it's not that accurate. I'd love a real life romance anytime! I want to see how they show Prince Albert as an unfavoured prince and Victoria as an active monarch.

Oh tall is the right word. I feel awfully small when I look at them and I'm barely 5'. ._.

I did a bit of reading on 'A Royal Affair', particularly about Christian VII who was described as 'mentally unstable'. He was sexually promiscuous and that led to the neglect of the Queen and eventually she had the adulterous relationship with the King's doctor.

It's too bad the Council regained power and got reinstated at court and the movie just passingly discussed how Frederick overthrew the old power and took hold of ruling the country. That would have made a better half of the story.

Oh wow, Queen Victoria marrying off her nine children who carried and inherited her weird disease! I didn't know that! Found it interesting too that she and Prince Albert had a harmonious relationship (what, with 9 children and all!) and she was deeply affected when he passed away. Now THAT is rare!

Lee Pace, Lee Pace...why does he sounds familiar? Ahh I now remember you mentioning it to me. I wonder if he and RA really are a couple :D Though I'd pretty much love RA for myself, thank you! XD XD

Q__Q I didn't know Lee Pace is so handsome with a beard and mustache! He just looks so erm...beautiful with long blonde hair and a clean-shaven face! I see good comments about Soldier's Girl...very interesting plot!

There's part two! :D

Hahahaha~! XD You'd need watch Matthew Macfadyen in a movie where his hair isn't curly. That will take your mind off the curly curls! XD

There's about a fourth of the movie left and now I feel sympathetic to the king. Why are kings that way?! If they're not foppish, they're loonies or have some obscure disease that only kings contract. :P But yes, I feel all these kinds of contradictions in their awkward and unwanted triangle, and the political interests of every single person that surrounds them.

Gosh, I feel like a total RA fan girl now! Q__Q This is bad. I'm addicted!

Yes, about the movie! I haven't seen the steamy scenes yet but I can feel the sexual tension between the doctor and Her Majesty beginning to develop. It's great to see that their attraction stems from the similarity of their political sentiments and the conducive condition that they were in. But I don't know what'll happen next. Betting they'll probably get their heads rolling off from the guillotine! O__o They had guillotines around that time, I think...

XD Have you seen Matthew's pics in Anna Karenina? I thought with a bowler hat, a monocle and a cane he'd be Johnnie Walker! XD XD

Hmmm...I am thinking Robin Hood since you said he was good in it or his recent movies: Captain America and the first two installations of the Hobbit movies. I understand his career is mainly built upon his past roles as second male lead. :\ So if I'm to watch more of his works, I guess I'm in for more heartbreaks. But thank goodness he's gaining more recognition for his acting. Hopefully he gets meatier roles moving forward.

Augh! My message went too long again! On to part 2!

Have finished Sparkhouse and thought Andrew was a sorry SOB. But other than that the movie wasn't half as bad as I expected it to be. Q__Q The local adaptation was heavier and more vengeful than this one. Sparkhouse just made me want more RA ;) Huwaaa!

I started watching A Royal Affair and noticed the movie is over 2 hours! I have to pause it for now and watch the remaining 2/3 of it later. (Gotta catch some zzzs!) But I can feel the tension already mounting. The costumes are really detailed and the landscape is superb and everything about this movie captures elegance and royalty at the very essence of the words.

Also, I appreciate that the political flavor being there without overpowering the and rather provides a solid backdrop of what was happening in neighboring parts of Europe. Am expecting to get a heart attack tomorrow over this! O__O

Oohh yeeaah~! The first time I saw this pic I was just--arrested. His whole countenance is just charming. Q___Q

Oh my, high five! XD Curls and beautiful eyes turn my knees to jelly. And you might have seen Matthew Macfadyen in Anna Karenina--he looked like a totally different person! XD He was a knockout with his long-ish hair in P&P 2005 movie and if minus his mustache and beard, he'd look like Alan Rickman in The Three Musketeers. :D

I don't know if RA has natural curls but I like his pics from Sparkhouse. Very attractive. http://www.picshare.ru/uploads/130414/xXx6wmC6I8.gif
