I'm with youuuu, Li Xun's smile ! I cannot 🫠🫠
and Yizhuo omg what a man 😍🙈🙈
also that line of Zhu Yun's gets me every time 😭 girl stole my heart ❤️
Xie Wei is one of my all time fav characters 🙈😭
you're right, FL definitely wasn't a saint either!
At that point in the drama, after knowing this character for many hours, I don't know how anyone could say that this man didn't/doesn't love her with his whole heart.
I love themmm. I don't know how I'm gonna ever enjoy another drama again 😭 I wanna see more of ZJY and CFY but at the same time I'm not ready to see them with other leads yet 😭
You are right, there is so much in the drama, it's really difficult to write something that can do it justice 😭😭 I will check out your review! I'm still feeling emotional about them 🥺
Yes! I've seen other users say that he is toxic and red flag, which tbh I also expected to be the case when I started it (after SOKP I was even looking forward to it... lol), but after having completed it I really can't see Li Xun that way. For example, he is nothing like Xie Wei from SOKP. Now THAT is a red flag toxic ML if there ever was one.
Xie Wei loved and wanted the FL so much that he couldn't control the feelings inside from taking over, he was frustrated and desperate. Whereas Li Xun loved the FL so much that he wanted to protect her at all costs, even if it meant total suppression of his feelings for her, getting hurt by his own actions, and being deprived of his only happiness. He thought everything he did to protect her would save her from more hurt in the long run, and only realised that he was wrong after that one incident opened his eyes to the truth 😭
He can have such an icy expression when he wants, but I agree his eyes really say a lot. This actor is so good in this role, I can't believe he pulled it off so well. It's the best cold ML I've seen who actually feels human underneath all the ice. Like you, I felt right away that he cared about Zhu Yun, but I can see how others might not have. The more you watch him the more you can spot his underlying feelings, but he doesn't make it obvious, you have to pay attention. Those moments when he is openly emotional (both negative and positive emotions) and the contrast between this side of him and his usual cold, guarded self is amazing. I can't get over it.
To make another distinction between Xie Wei and Li Xun, I love ZLH but I feel like his facial expressions gave all of Xie Wei's hidden feelings away. That didn't detract from my enjoyment tho, If anyone else had played Xie Wei I wouldn't have liked the character. ZLH was perfect as Xie Wei, even if he was easy to read. Li Xun on the other hand, is not easy to read unless (again) you are really paying attention, for example often the way he plays with his lighter can help give an idea about his emotional state more than his face can.
And before anyone @s me, I know that Li Xun and Xie Wei are completely different characters. I don't know why I'm still comparing them actually... maybe cause I love them both 😂 Xie Wei is quick to be set aflame, his fire is always there right under the surface. Li Xun's passion is buried under a ton of ice, his fire is rare and imo the contrast really enhances the intensity of it. I have to say I appreciate so much how Chen Feiyu executed the coldness of Li Xun in such an icy yet human way. But I've never seen him in anything else, so maybe that's just his standard way of acting, I wouldn't know... 😅
I love this showww 💕🥰😍
I've already spotted a few mistakes I need to fix lol 😂 idk about posting as a review I'm not confident in my writing and it's really just my disorganised thoughts dumped on to the page haha 😅 but I'll think about it 🤭
fr I will be ffing through his scenes too from now on 😂😂
If I have one complaint about this drama, it's Gao Jianhong. There are some other minor things too that I won't mention, because honestly the love story that plays out between Li Xun and Zhu Yun overshadows everything else and IMO takes this show to another level. Every stage of their relationship is gold. When I started this, I never expected to see a love so deep.
I love love love L&P. So I need to share some thoughts, and the comment section is where it's gonna have to be, because I don't want to subject the feeds to more of my constant spamming lol. This is going to be long and I will only focus on the leads, and their relationship. Just my personal opinions/observations. I apologise in advance for it being all over the place haha... 😅
Li Xun is cold/aloof, arrogant, and full of pride. All common traits that come with the curse of being a genius. But he is not unfeeling. Under that cold exterior is a lonely, emotional, and passionate man. He understands the importance of money better than anyone, because of a tragedy that struck in his past for a lack of it. He wants to be the master of his own destiny, and having money allows him to do this. He doesn't interact with people well, and rubs everyone the wrong way. He's not interested in other people or their feelings, and those around him often say that he cares about no one other than himself. It appears like he mostly stays this way during the drama, but if you pay attention you can see that he genuinely cares about his (few) friends and of course the female lead, even if he can't show it well. As Zhu Yun puts it, Li Xun is a very extreme person. He does things differently and thinks about things differently. He is easily misunderstood, and he lets himself be misunderstood. He can be very harsh with his words and actions, especially in his freshman year. I feel like this, coupled with Gao Jianhong's extreme insecurity, is the reason why everything happened the way that it did. These two should never have tried to have any sort of relationship, with their personality traits it just doesn't work. I am so glad that in the end, after "making peace", they seem to have decided to keep their distance from each other.
Li Xun has gone through a lot by the time he enters college. His parents are gone, his reputation is ruined, he's suffering from a chronic back injury inflicted by his sister's abusive husband, he's alienated from the only family member he has left, and he is feeling the weight and failure of the responsibility his late father left to him. At this point he has become used to being on his own, looking out for number one, his father's old lighter being his only companion. He is a year older than his peers, and the top-scorer of the college entrance exam when he arrives on campus. There he experiences friendship and love, and as a result he slowly becomes softer and more mellow. Later Zhu Yun compares him to a fruit that will get sweeter and softer/gentler as time goes on. I think that, subconsciously, Li Xun's attitude is like a shield that he puts up to protect himself. Zhu Yun sees this, and she also sees this shield coming down the more he starts to open up and allow others in. This leaves him vulnerable, so she decides to become his new shield and protector herself. And what an amazing shield she is.
The actions she takes to protect Li Xun's pride, body, and dignity have moved my heart in a way that an FL has never done before. A character like this can easily fall into an annoying saviour complex, but Zhu Yun is not like that at all. She is a down to earth person who is also not without flaws herself. She doesn't need recognition, and doesn't flaunt her actions. Often Li Xun will not even know about her sacrifices until much later.
"You can't bow your head, I won't allow it"
Every time she said these words, my heart skipped a beat. Zhu Yun tries her best to be Li Xun's armour, but she is not made of iron or steel, she is human. She gets hurt, she falls into depression, she keeps herself distracted while putting on a brave face to those around her. Li Xun and Zhu Yun are similar in this way, they are both able to bottle up and completely hide their emotions when they choose. Zhu Yun rigidly standing on that beach is something that will stay with me for a long time.
Li Xun tries to protect Zhu Yun by pushing her away, which ends up hurting her, and causes him to hurt as well. It is heartbreaking to watch, especially when you can see both of their true feelings. When Li Xun apologises, and they reach a turning point in their relationship, all seems well. But in reality, there is a lot of unresolved trauma still beneath the surface. The slap/hug scene showcases this perfectly.
"I was around you, but I didn't pull you up. I was the first one to leave you."
This. Scene. Years of bottled up emotions breaking through, the guilt she felt, and his promise not to destroy himself again. So good. SO GOOD.
When Zhu Yun published that rumour about herself, I was once again amazed by the way that she protects Li Xun. "I'm willing" she says, to which he replies: "But, I'm not." These two... the love they have for each other, and their chemistry, is off the charts. That entire make up scene was TOP TIER. The build up, the kiss (!!), the PASSION, everything. It couldn't have been more perfect. Amazing acting here.
I LOVE that they got their marriage registration with just the company guys and Yizhuo (my love 🥰) as their witnesses. No big ceremony. It fits them. Don't get me started on the fact that Li Xun got MARRIED in that unwashed shirt, it had me smiling so much my cheeks hurt. "If your mother comes here it's no use, it's legal" 😂 I adore the company and everyone in it. 💕
Before I watched this, I thought that AASOL had the best proposal scene I would ever see, but I was wrong. This is it for me. "Zhu Yun, Marry Me" in big letters on that building, the realisation that Li Xun had been planning this since that New Year... even before he asked her what her dream was. And the note. THE NOTE. He really kept that note the whole time... Since their freshman year of college. Seven. Years. I have no words.
"When you wrote this note you said: Li Xun, no matter what you want to do and what goals you want to accomplish in the future, count me in."
"I'll tell you right now, my goal is to spend the rest of my life with you. Can I fulfill it?"
😭😭😭🤧
And finally, at the end when Li Xun looks at Zhu Yun through the glass. All those years ago when he first saw her through the window, he thought that she was someone in a fairy tale. Now he looks at her and knows that she is his. All the memories of her going through his mind as he thinks to himself: "If time could stop at the moment we first met... If people could really look back on their lives on their deathbed, she... may be the last person I see in my life." and the rewind back to their first meeting, except this time they are both smiling at each other. ❤️
I am not someone who gets (overly) emotional very easily when it comes to romance in dramas. Now tragic scenes, crying scenes, death scenes, sure I'll cry most times. But romance? It's one of my fav genres, but NGL more often than not I'm cringing, not crying. For me it rarely ever happens with romance. But this drama, and especially this last scene... let me tell you I cried and cried and cried some more and I told myself that these characters are not real, but all I could think about was the fact that I'm so happy that Zhu Yun and Li Xun met.
Zhu Yun has got to be my fav modern female character of all time. I don't think that there will ever be another FL that could top this, for me no one else comes close.
TLDR: Out of my top 3, this one sits at number 1, replacing RMPW. This show is not without flaws, but the relationship between the leads made me feel something I've never felt before from a romance drama.
The only thing that I wonder about is Li Xun's nephew(?) An'an. I was hoping that they would mention him again at some point. Is he really just gonna be raised alone by his terrible father? 😭
P.S. I wanna thank the user @twinty from the bottom of my heart for recommending this and getting me to actually watch it 😭❤️
I recently found out that this guy is nicknamed "vampire gege" on the MDL feed, it's perfect hahaha
