A needy and uncompromising director can control all of those things. RJE is not big or popular enough to improvise. And not saying she is top tier. But not bad either.

Let's say it was Ahn Eunjin instead of RJE. How is she supposed to invent emotions which we are not aware of ? The showrunners did not build up any dynamic between the leads, and decided to give the male lead more dynamic with the baby. The promos also focused on the ML and the baby. I am sure you have watched Dynamite Kiss. Compare her performance there versus My Dearest. Or Good bad Mother.

Weak script, bad directions can justify bad acting specially when you know, that the actors are capable of more. Say that to Travolta and Forest Whitaker for battlefield earth or Oscar Isaac in X Men Apocalypse or Bradley Cooper/Emma Stone in Aloha.
