Although I haven’t seen the last few episodes (I know it’s tragic & sad 😭) but I’m glad I watched this drama! There’s nothing really like this type of show & the experience of watching it from the beginning & towards its end was great. I’m happy I discovered Liu Haocun! I’m a fan now. I’m happy she’s getting lots of public recognition for her role here along with the cast & production team.

One of the cdramas I had plan to watch last year as it aired but never got to it. I’m halfway done-20 episodes in now!
Things that I enjoy - intellectual smart Male Lead who resolves & solves conflict through problem solving instead of brute force-fighting. I liked that the protagonist works in disguise under one of the villains. Really makes for an interesting story set up. It was great to see him rise in rank from a no name - geomancer aide - to a 5th rank court official. I also like that he is a bit of a ‘kingmaker’ type of character where he turns people into potentially powerful political figures (ex: Marquise’s second son)
Dialogue - I really like the way the characters engage & talk to each other. It’s almost poetic.
Cinematography- really well shot-directed drama. The far off panoramic shots are really lovely. The color grading-slightly muted color sets the tone for this drama. The stage setting for this production is great. Very elaborate manors. The court hall is so grand. The Zhen tower is gorgeous. Really love that setting detail. They hired a lot of extras for this show. It makes the story setting much more immersive! I could tell they put a lot of effort & money into this show’s production. Some of the actions sequence are well choreographed too! Especially the fights in the rain. Really cool stuff!
Clothes - The historical costume-designs is so well made & tailored. Especially the ones that are worn by the men. Marquise robes are so detailed & nice.
Friendship - I love his newfound comradery with the people he meets like his masters, peers & friends and reuniting with old ones.
Slight Romance - I wasn’t actually expecting romance between XH & Xiang but it seems like viewers who’ve watched this hates it lol?? It does not bother me. Xiang does play a pivotal role in the story and does move the plot forward. I like their push & pull-bickering thing they’ve got going on lol plus she supports XH. I like that she does all the fighting while XH does more of the diplomatic talking.
The cast - This might be the best Xiao Zhan has ever looked in a historical-costume drama. Not really a fan of the way the wigs look-made lol but he is so handsome here. I could tell he gained a bit of weight & muscle for this role. Plus he is so tall, all the robes he worn looks fantastic on him 😍 it’s nice to hear him dub his own lines. I love the tone of his voice! Everyone else in the cast has been playing their parts well too.
I’m hoping the revenge aspect fully commits-pulls through at the end!

Viewers tend to look at dramas from a romantic lense the moment it has some romance in it but the lead is not a romance drama. Yes, it does touch on Qin E’s romantic relationships (whether it be good or bad/if you like it or not) It doesn’t matter who she ends up with or not or if there’s a happy ending. The story is about Laidi/Qin E’s life, her struggles, her triumphs, and her experiences & qinqiang opera. If you’re expecting a happy romantic ending, this drama is not for you. Please don’t rate this drama low because it won’t have a happy ending. Please keep an open mind when watching until the end!
