I really like the way Ren Min is carrying the weight of developing her character's re;ationship with Third Master. Although she is, in herself, a strong and decisive personality, she doesnt confuse standing up for herself with respect and proper behavior with an older and powerful person who is a very close ally of her family in Tongzhou.

Although she doesnt have conscious feelings towards YanYun, she has been sending out emotional feelers to find out what he expects of her, how he wants her to behave in her family and in public. So when she talks to him she always begins with a very open gentleness with a built in ask, what would he like her to do?

It is really very tender and charming and a breath of fresh air. She is not a willfully impulsive person at all but a deeply intelligent one with a high EQ. A fighter who can think on her feet. I do hope the path to marriage between her and YY is not too long.

To each their own. Third Master is one of my definition for heat -- a classic romantic tsundere but with those excellent Chinese acting skills which Ci Sha uses discreetly for nuance. I hang on his every glance at this point.

I loved the way yesterday the conspicuous consumption of the Ming period was portrayed. Nice to have an accurate background for the period, in broad strokes of course. Really puts a more of a point on the usual anti-corruption theme in Cdrama; the RL cadastral regulation is usually more a part of the reorganization of a centralized government (with good information collection). Of course the older elite hates it too. Good information mean good tax revenue which a stronger central government needs

Yes, I thought that was great. However the Korean creative community is currently way ahead of the kdrama audience this way; the film/music community. By the way, Unwritten Seoul which was inclusive got noticed -- the poet's lover --and Park Bo Young got an award elsewhere for her progressive presence (?).

The Third Master is heating up nicely. A tall thin sexy plotter. Just the thing for a chilly May.

It is kind of nice to know ahead of time who will get married in the end (MDL summary) but maybe it would have been interesting too to believe more in the fortunes of the FL's suitors, in sequence.
The mdl summaries just tell us straight out, HEA. So no one need ask anymore. Hmph. Kinda takes the fun out of it a bit.

Not defending the scriptwriter, just thinking out loud..

I almost dropped the show at that point. I fault the writer for giving us yet another spoiled willful impulsive FL, and then revealing that Jin Zhao is thoughtful, conniving, foresighted and extremely intelligent in all the EQ ways.
In fact Jin Zhao is a little matriarch in the making.

If only JZ would stop falling into the nearest puddle to give the Third Master a chance to see how cute she is and realize how much he cares. Couldnt the writer think of some other sort of rescue or accident?

My sympathies go to WinWin's character, the Heir. He is, as Third Master says, a man in despair. A clever and intelligent man in a military family who cannot fight. So sad. Still, he is an arrogant and violent twit.

Much as I am enjoying this the impulsive-and-headstrong-FL-falls/almost drowns BY HER OWN FAULT, and has to be rescued by the man who will love her in the end....Except that it is iron fireworks, couldnt the writer have been a little more imaginative with this?
The stale characterization is only rescued by Ren Min's really delicious intensity.

Fun, light. The young cast is ok, but the supporting cast is a parade of all that is best in kdrama. The hottest couple is the FL's Dad and the ML's mom, Choi Won Young and Kim Jee Soo. Definitely a 'rebel youth' vibe. Soccer game brings everyone together in class conscious Silla!
