This was pretty bad. It didn't really make sense. I'm fine with the body-swapping - that wasn't the problem. It was the dependence on the usual fallback ot bad writers - a totally implausible misunderstanding. Win's murderous rage at the inheritance made no emotional sense, and two people who have known each other for their whole lives and have been in love for like 20 years have never discussed it? Come on. And the mother's plot was just stupid. So she thought it would be impossible to separate them, but she thought she would try anyway by potentially throwing away a quarter of the family's wealth? What if Korn married someone else? Why not just have a conversation? If Win's parents had told Korn thyy wouldn't allow it, he would have respected their wishes.
The story felt endless and repetitive - drive, argue, eat, eat, sleep, eat, eat more, argue, drive, eat, occassionally get holy water and listen to monks say things as profound as you would find in a fortune-cookie, eat, argue... And what was the payoff? An anti-climatic and dull finale. Since this series is OTT, why not have the ceremony, but the twist is Lin & Non get engaged, and Korn confesses his love to Win? And was the aunt evil or not? She dumped out the water intending for her own nephew to stay in a coma forever, yet she was supportive of him in the end. Sorry, but this was a mess, and not even Earth's abs and porcelain skin could save it.
I was reading the deluge of comments that came up in the past few hours, and I was thinking of one thing:The ending…
BLs are so formulaic that every one of us could sketch out the entire plot with 95% accuracy after watching the opening credits. That can create a sense of comfort and safety - you know the worst thing that will happen is the seme's evil ex-gf will drop out of the sky in Ep 11 to slightly mess things up with an implausible misunderstanding, and then everyone lives happily ever after. You know the taller one is a seme, and you know the shorter one will be hit in the head with a basketball if he strays within 50 m of a game. There's no such thing as sexuality in BL, and no persecution. Everyone is rich with no real problems (the only thing Gene in Lovely Writer had to worry about was to which of his giant mansions should he retire to sulk over minor setbacks).
So then Miracle of Teddy Bear comes along and gives us a main character with PTSD who has been horrifically abused (imagine if your father beat you and called you a useless freak every day for being a girl [or whatever] and your mother didn't protect you from this. That's what happened to Nut), and like most victims of abuse suffers from severe depression and anger issues. How to react? Well, for some people it's with zero compassion and zero forgiveness. But they were expecting the BL formula, and Nut doesn't fit any expected role, but he yells a lot, and only the Bad Guy does that, so they can't like him.
I understand people getting upset when terrible behavior is normalized or treated like it's OK - but that never happened here. Nut always knows when he's wrong, and he always apologizes, and he's a very loving person underneath all his pain.
Nut's behavior is never portrayed as acceptable - and I don't know how far you've watched, but his abuse is nothing compared to what he was subjected to for 18 years - and his mother is largely to blame. It's surprising Nut can function at all - he's also quite mentally ill and he needs love an treatment. Or failing that, a miracle. :)
Worst ending ever! Tofu was completely unappreciated by Nut. Nut used and abused Tofu. Tofu helped Nut healed…
The "brat" was suffering from trauma caused by severe emotional and physical abuse. I don't understand how you can feel that Nut didn't appreciate Tofu by the end - I'm trying to see it that way to understand your comments, but I really can't.
I think maybe Na's mental illness was caused by knowing Saen killed Sib - she knows about it, as she and Jan discussed…
Oh - I get it now. Thanks - I actually don't have much lakorn experience, so that's good to know. BL is sort of the opposite - the style is very understated.
I think maybe Na's mental illness was caused by knowing Saen killed Sib - she knows about it, as she and Jan discussed…
The anger absolutly needed to be there - but I think it could have been just as effective with a little less of it. It was't excessive, but if you have to cut things for time, cut things that have already been communicated rather than things that can shed light on the story.
But the process of editing can be complicated, and it's not uncommon that more gets taken out of the later parts than the eariler ones.
It's just my interpretation, but it seemed clear to me that the whole story is a screenplay written by Nut to process the tragedies of his life. Nut more or less explicitly says this, and it explains the fantasy elements and why Tofu looks like Neung for no apparent reason other than that he was Nut's first crush.
I'm a bit surprised at the reactions here. I think maybe we're getting too conditioned to formulaic BLs. Normally you know the endgame for all the characters in the first 5 minutes. Actually earlier. You can tell from the credits or even just the thumbnail. But sometimes it's nice to watch something more complex that's not just cute boys being cute to each other, whitewashing the misery and hardship that real lgbtq+ youth experience.
But the lack of compassion for Nut is really upsetting to me. I get it if you've only watched the first 4 eps, but once you understand why he suffers from such anger, it should be clear that he's like that because he was seriously emotionally and physically abused for his whole life. That's on top of the "normal" suffering experienced by nearly all lgbtq+ youth and having to take care a sick parent alone as a teen.
Anyway, it seems pretty clear to me, although it's just my interpretation, that this whole story was Nut's screenplay. He more or less told us that at the end, meaning Tofu was probaby never anything but a teddy bear, and this story was Nut's way of processing all the tragedy of his life.
As for the ending, it was telegraphed from the beginning. Tofu wasn't a human being, he was a teddy bear that took on human form, created by Tarn's love and Nut's hopelessness. His only purpose was Nut's happiness. That's why you never heard him discuss his aspirations for himself - did he have any hobbies, interests, or career goals that weren't about Nut?
This was a beautiful and affirming story - I don't think we've ever had anything like it. I can't imagine rewatching it, but I'll be thinking about it years from now. There are BLs I watched a few days ago that I have no recollection of.
People who are saying Nut is too aggressive should really stfu. I'm literally a living example of what Nut's character…
I hear that. It never gets easy. Even if 90% of people are totally OK with lgbtq+ people, that last 10% can still make your life very difficult - especially as people that aren't OK are generally older and hold power - I've lost more than one job because of that. I'm unemployed right now because of it, although I should have known better than to work for a Korean company.
I don't think people can understand the terror and self-loathing that has to be overcome - I never got to experience youthful relationships, and had to be a "teen" in my late 20s, and I've never been free of depression - I can only function with medication.
And even though I have much superior resources to Nut and a brother to share the emotioanal burden with me, it's so hard to deal with sick parents - I live with constant guilt because I'm not as patient with my mother as I should be. It's impossible to be perfect, or even close to it.
The lack of compassion for Nut on this board is completely astonishing to me. I guess I'm not as flawless and selfless as everyone else. But to be fair, when you're younger, the world looks a lot more black and white, and you haven't had to make a lot of decisions with serious consquences yet.
And Nut does look worse until it's revealed what his mother did to him - I don't blame her as she was just as abused as he was, but that's a huge fail on her part, and Nut didn't have all the info he needed to understand her.
It’s not like the ending doesn’t make sense but poor Tofu 😞 He was brought to life to just basically help…
Na went insane due to what Saen did - which is a mild hint that she was extremely distraught over Sib's death, and she didn't tell Nut because she didn't want him to deal with that burden - she didn't do it to protect Saen.
Nut is not any more self-centered than anyone else - it's not easy to take care of a sick parent even when you're older and have resources - let alone as a teenager.
Tofu isn't human - he's a teddy bear, and his only purpose is to make Nut happy. He accomplished that, and now gets to watch him be happy and even still provide him with support and happiness as a teddy bear.
The character of Nut :Toxic Abusive ProblematicGaslighter Emotionally Destructive
Wow. I hope an angel descends from heaven to be your partner, although not even angels are perfect so that might not work for you.
Nut was viciously and relentlessly abused as a child and received no support from the person who should have defended him, he was ripped from his true love, and had to deal with supporting a disturbed parent while still a teen. I'm struggling to take care of my parents and I earn a lot and have a brother to share the burden and I need psychological help to deal with it. And you are this merciless.
I wish your parents a long and healthy life and that they pass peacefully in their sleep.
I’m probably the only one dying of laughter after Tofu escapes from the crematorium? That entire chase scene…
It was meant to be funny, so you're not a bad person. Everyone started watching a series about a teddy bear that turned into a human - is it some sort of surprise that there's a teddy bear action sequence?
Thank you. Well, I decided to put some weight on Cast in "Acting/Cast", and Son is extremely cute and Dr Pun looks…
It's terrible. But for me, at least, in a good way. It's about a school principal obsessed with destroying a volleyball team for no apparent reason and includes two totally unrelated ghost stories. It also has a couple of surprising love scenes.
Lol @ "cheese". You can spot the PP from a planet away. It's a fail though like you pointed out. Lots of comments…
It's possible there was lube and a condom, but it would require a small time-jump. Lube of some type is easier - I'm sure there are various lotions around to quickly grab. Female writers get obsessed with "preparation" for some reason - maybe it's part of the hurt/comfort phenomenon.
A stiff drink is the best preparatio in any case. :)
