Ton has been in total denial of his feelings, finally accepts it, and so the first thing he does is go and give Chon a big hug, cuddle up and talk things through.... would happen if this wasn't sh$# writing. The first thing he does is aggressively push sex on the boy he's supposedly been protecting all his life? And despite the fact that Ton just violently assaulted a shiny angel descended from heaven to bring us all happiness, Chon just goes along with it without comment?
When coming to terms with your sexuality you need some time before you're ready for sex - and Chon knows that too and should have put the brakes on. I don't blame him so much, really, because if Pod took his shirt off in front of me and said "let's do it", it's not like I would say no. But the total and almost instant turnaround of Ton's character does not ring true and was not satisfying. I'm usually one to complain that BLs rarely have any physical love in them, but it has to fit into the narrative, and that was the worst possible place to put it. I've been slogging through this trainwreck and THAT is the payoff?
The hug at the end of Hello Stranger had about a billion times more impact than this. Or think about that sex(-ish) scene in ITSAY - how powerful it was in addition to being smokin' hot. Because it belonged right in that spot in the story. Even the shower scene in TharnType (original series) made more sense - it was shocking and twisted, but it worked in the story.
I agree with some of the sentiment, although I actually like this show, not sure if I agree about pan representation…
I get what you're saying, but many of these characters are descibing themselves exactly as you defined pansexual. Check Na's discussion with Ton this ep. I'm not saying they portray it well - but they are making the claim.
It's not your brain not playing along. I'm not sure what's going wrong - both leads are decent actors, but Chon…
Unfortunately, I think the chances of that are somewhere between 0% and negative100%. Hopefully all the Na-love will land Neo some choice roles in the future.
ep 8: so, I thought this would all come together once they got together, but.. it's just kind of tense and awkward…
It's not your brain not playing along. I'm not sure what's going wrong - both leads are decent actors, but Chon & Ton do feel like they're just going through the motions. Bad writing is certainly part of it - bad editing, too?
Or maybe they cast the wrong actor as Na, because it is literally impossible to imagine any situation where anyone, anywhere would prefer a violent asshole like Ton over someone as wholly, spectacularly wonderful as Na.
Every time I think they can't sink any lower in LGBTQ+ representation, they find a way.
Chon is portrayed as self-confident, but immediately caves to a violent man who just assaulted one of his friends. Chon is treated like a girl out of a 19th c novel, no problem.
Two gay men who are not super masculine don't even defend themselves against attack, and rely on a "real" man to save them.
I'm glad that BL explores sexuality, but not EVERY SINGLE male main character (the one in the "man" role) needs to be pansexual or undefined or "not gay, I only like ________". Inclusive representation is a good thing if that's how it's intended. If men's sexuality is portrayed as this and so many other BLs do out of institutional homophobia, then that is not good.
And is it the writing, or does Chon now suddenly want no sexual contact with Ton? Why did he object when Ton gave him a peck in the bathroom? The man in the dominant role can have desire - the man in the passive role has to act like a Victorian virgin. Because the people making this show have no ability to visualize a same-sex relationship, so they just drop a boy into the girl's role (and I mean a Victorian virgin girl, not a real one) and call it a day.
I don't know... In the first season I liked the dynamic between Sky and James, and now it's really changed. In Roommate. Sky lusted after James constantly, and here he acts like he'll get some sort of disease if James touches him. Also, do we have to do this plotline again? This is better done than Roommates, but the plot is too tired - we didn't really get to see much development in the first series, and now it's coming to a screeching halt because of James' mom. If they're going to center everything on women & girls, then why are you making a BL? Can we have some actual love between boys?
"Phai is a lump of a boy"LMFAOThat's the laugh I needed.
I think you're right. And the way it's so jagged and uneven, like he did it himself without a mirror or something. I didn't even recognize it was the guy from The Moment at first - I noticed it when checking his credits and was really surprised.
lol it's the opposite with me. I think Phai is very cute and Thanu is really unattractive
That's probably not too common an opinion, but the problem isn't looks so much as personality - they didn't really give one to Phai. He's been charming in other roles - I don't know why they took him in this direction here.
Criticizing someone’s physical appearance is pretty low of you. Yikes.
I don't mean just physically. The way he's directed, costumed, made up, his hair, his lines, his role - it's just so blah. Who is he? What's his personality? He's just... there. Not someone that would immediately catch the eye of a considerably older man as his pre-destined soul-mate. In a Romance, especially one given a supernatural flare like this one, there needs to be some... well, magic. Or at least a fully-drawn character- we don't even have that.
Did you mean SciFi (Science Fiction)? Because I'm pretty sure (and hope) that this is a fiction story. Yes, it was a bit silly. It would have been better if only Phanu saw all that.
Well, that was spectacularly slow. There's a point where everything can take so long you're more relieved than happy - "OK, formula box checked. Next?" That episode should have been half that length at most, and for the love of God, can we PLEASE not introduce any new plotlines into Ep 10?!?
The Phanu/Phai meetup was OK, but the vision was unnecessary, although since they dragged out meeting until almost the end of the series, maybe they need some plot device to move it along. Also, no offense to him, but they seriously miscast Phai. It's kind of weird. Phanu looks like a dark angel descended from heaven to alight upon the earth and adorn it with his supernatural beauty, and Phai is a lump of a boy. They guy who plays Sandee would have been better. Or at least they could give Phai a decent haircut! It makes him look so young that it makes Phanu sort of Paedo.
And after the insufferable Wayu plot, he's going to end up with nothing?!? Pha will swoop back in at the last minute after abandoning him (well, placing him in the care of dark angel descended from heaven etc. etc.)? How is that a story? Who wrote this? I would rather have seen more Jack and Koh. Or, Padbok only got around to choking Kit - maybe he could do Wayu too. And the two guys in the locker room that I don't even remember.
Okay, after reading the comments I finally got around to stealing time to watch ep 9 and I have some thoughts.…
I'm with you on just about all of that. Except I don't mind Padbok, because if ALL the characters wandered around slowly, and talking slowly about the meaning of love and destiny I would go into a coma.
OMG. How have I never heard about this show, and why are so few people watching it? And a 7.8 rating?!? This show is amazing! It's beautifully shot, the acting is good, the story is interesting... Is it because it's slow-moving? Anyway, I love it.
This show feels like something really special trapped in an endless cycle of repeated flashbacks and junk food product placement. This desperately needs editing - it's just too slow. I don't mind slowly developing plots - I actually prefer it - but there can't be this much filler and repetition.
The boys are gorgeous, and Bart is a really appealing character. I'm terrified Bestie will come to Manila - I really need a break from her constant eating. With her mouth full. Always. It's kind of an offensive stereotype, TBH. Also, she's kind of useless. She hits & insults Bart without giving him any corresponding support or useful advice - is she just there to have someone plus-sized? I'm glad she's not the "fat girl with a great personality" cliché, but she needs some agency.
I'm assuming Bart will become a successful model but be exploited and sent down a ruinous path due to his naivete. I hope they don't do the tired Farm Boy Makes Good trope.
I understand your point. I'm just happy they found a good, positive role for someone who may not be defined as…
I can't take it anymore. I have to turn off the volume for all her scenes. One of my "issues" is people talking with their mouth full. But everyone is constantly eating! Are all the sponsors junk food companies? It's getting exhausting - as if the plot isn't slow enough.
Until now I agree with you, but I'm also wondering if the lack of plot is also due to the novel? I haven't read…
But if the novel is bad, then why not write something else? Or have the two actors play completely different characters?
I couldn't deal with LBC2 because the actors didn't really seem to care anymore (probably because of poor directing and scripting), and resetting the TinCan story made no sense. It ruined the continuity and therefore my interest in their romance, which was in the original series one of the most interesting and compelling I've seen. It's never a good idea to put an author in charge of a production. A visual medium is totally different than a written one, and you really need people who understand what you can do visually to make a great series.
If you think about the actual plot of ITSAY, was it anything special? Not really. But the directing, acting, and cinematography were so top-rate that the result was one of the best BLs of all time.
Ep 3 was unpleasant to watch. Once again, we drag out the ugly stereotype of an old effeminate gay man being a shameless predator. Wasn't that the same actor who almost made me drop My Day? And the fall-so-faces-are-too-close-together-and-stare-at-each-other-too-long cliche that BLs can't seem to do without. Granted, this was a variation, because it was Plot Device that fell between them, instead of one of the boys, but still.
What is this show even about? Jaime was coming on to Winston so strongly that it was laughable, and Winston didn't cancel the whole thing? Also, now Winston looks like he's in love with Jaime. Seriously? I can imagine being in lust with Jaime fairly easily, but to fall in love with a vacuous creep in a single day?
Given Jaime masturbated to Jaime's podcast in Ep 1, I assume he's been into Winston for a while, but do you expect to win someone over by fake-dating his heart-broken best friend and coming on so strong that it's disturbing?
Jaime is either the most horrendously bad actor I've ever seen, or a total genius playing a fully-realized character hiding behind a strange and dull surface persona.
I'll give it another episode because the first two were weird and interesting, as opposed to this empty formulaic mess, and the production values are high, but I'm on the verge of dropping it.

End of rant.
