The pacing is not the issue. It's the way the story unfolds using excessive flash-backs to push along/solving…
I like how you completely avoid the MCU example đ. To claim that flashbacks are shallow and lazy is like someone who complains about the split infinitive in the sentence, âTo bodily go where no one has gone before.â It depends on the context and situation. There is no hard, defensible rule that makes it wrong. Flashbacks in an 2hr movie donât make sense. You just donât have the time for the flashback and driving the show forward. Flashbacks in a 33+ hour series is just fine if they are compelling. If you are trying to claim that the flashback of PSJ with her brother and shooting arrows wasnât compelling then youâre doubly nuts. If you are trying to claim that the backstory for the mermaid story wasnât compelling and added to the emotion of the story then thatâs weird. But maybe youâre weirdâŠ
As for the publicity, i challenge you to find me as many marketing posts online or offline as we have seen for The Double, Kill Me Love Me or even The Story of Pearl Girl.
Heck, iQIYI even released this show at the last minute with barely any separation from when it received its license to when they aired it. Even though the public was not prepared, the show has soared. And, yes, it is an example of the showâs popularity that other shows are imitating them. Right now, this is already a sleeper hit. The question is whether it can become a mega sleeper hit.
The story isn't that interesting either. GJM is a terrible script writer..
Are you nuts?!? You can see that heâs guilty. He says that heâs guilty. Are you going to be dishonorable and let him go? Especially, when your group is known for executing people for less. Immediate danger? Seriously, you must not live in the US. The police shoot and kill people all the time, with impunity, when thereâs no immediate danger. At present, the Chongwu Camp are the bad guys so it makes sense for them to operate that way. And they clearly stated that they were not going to arrest him. They were going to kill him and he was surrounded by people with crossbows. Even Superman wouldnât have been able to dodge all those arrows. But her decision was driven by her deep sense of honor and adherence to the law. Those arenât bad qualities.
As for an investigation, the Demon Hunting crew needed the big demonâs help to know who was behind it. How in the world would her previous employers have even figured that out??? It would have been stupid writing to do what youâre describing. On top of that, you act like she didnât look for answers after he became a demon and just accepted things. The show clearly states that she investigated the situation 3 times and could find nothing.
If you donât like the director thatâs fine. But youâre storyline is far less believable than his

DittoâŠ
If youâre going to claim something as factual like there are plot holes or the pacing is slow then bring proof otherwise prepare to be challenged. If you canât handle the challenge then donât start something. I feel like Iâm talking to Drake fans during his beef with Kendrick Lamar
Seriously no offense, but why are all the Baize goddesses so weak?? Literally all of the demons are so much more…
How on earth can you come to that conclusion? đ€Ł
The Baize token just made its first full appearance in episode 10 so we donât have enough info to know if the goddess is weak or strong. What we do know is the first goddess was powerful enough to strip power away from the most powerful demon in the land even though she was sick at the time.
ManâŠepisodes 10 & 11 I went from a âdid they jump the shark moment?â in episode 10 to a âWTFâ in a good way set of moments in Ep 11. Now, Iâm demanding that they drop 12 immediately đđŒđ
One thing I noticed is that starting with episode 9, it feels like the wipes that follow a flashback have been change to a station blip type of transition. Almost like someone is controlling the situation đ€
Most definitely!! I waited so long for Fangs of Fortune and I thought it was just me! I thought maybe I just had…
2nd billing? LOL. In the 21st century, the billing structure is that the 1st ML and 1st FL are considered to have equal billing unless one of them is some kind of megastar. The FL starred in the most Googled show of 2018. She went on to win many awards. One of the reasons why Netflix offered her a deal is because of her high name recognition inside and outside of Asia
Most definitely!! I waited so long for Fangs of Fortune and I thought it was just me! I thought maybe I just had…
â For a high-budget drama with popular actors and ip, reaching 7 500 is average. However, for a low budget with no so well-known actors and not-so-popular ip, reaching 7 500 shows that the drama is a success.â
The story isn't that interesting either. GJM is a terrible script writer..
Are you kidding? How was she going to investigate her brotherâs story when the Chongwu (sp.) Camp already had him surrounded and had stated that if she couldnât kill him at that moment, they would do it for her. Not to mention he was covered in innocent peopleâs blood, and he really did murder innocent people. It doesnât matter than he was being controlled. It was his actions that led him to being controlled. Episode 5 already stated clearly that letting someone one use you to commit crimes does not absolve you of responsibility for those crimes.
Itâs just a shame that he couldnât tell her that he wanted to help her because he loved her instead letting her believe that he became a demon because was jealous of her.
As for plot holes around killing, Iâd love for you to provide another example of what you think youâve observed.
The story isn't that interesting either. GJM is a terrible script writer..
Thank you for providing your example. You understand that to become a puppet the person had to die. CL was collecting the souls of the people that he tricked. Puppets are just a type of zombie that CL could control. PSGâs brother had become a demon that had committed atrocities. The show stated very clearly in Episode 5 that the end does not justify the means. He would have had to go to prison.
With those facts, it makes sense that no one was in a rush to save his âlifeâ. The scene starts with PSG being challenged to repeat the decision she made 3 months ago. Did she understand her brother better now? As for PSGâs actions in Epis 8-9, if you paid attention during those flashbacks that you seem to abhor, you would know that PSG loved her brother and was willing to sacrifice her future and happiness to protect him and to live up to their familyâs legacy even when it caused her physical pain. Although she followed the law of the Chongwu (sp?) Camp, it makes sense that she would be depressed, conflicted and overwhelmed by guilt over his death at her hands.
Itâs a situation that could have been avoided if the siblings had been able to communicate better. As I learned from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon regret about not expressing oneâs feelings better is a common theme in Chinese tragedies. Plus, both PSG siblings were in their twenties. Most people donât learn to communicate their feelings well until theyâve had way more life experience.
Most definitely!! I waited so long for Fangs of Fortune and I thought it was just me! I thought maybe I just had…
If the production companies in C-entertainment industry didnât care about international audiences then they would license to international platforms or provide subtitles in languages other than Mandarin or Cantonese, or etc.
Common sense should tell you that. Most companies and industries live by the motto, âYou can never be rich enoughâ.
Wu Jingyan starred in the most Googled show on the planet in 2018. It made her a household name throughout Asia ever since. She may not model as frequently as women like Zhao Luisi or Bai Lu, but sheâs not new a ânobodyâ
Most definitely!! I waited so long for Fangs of Fortune and I thought it was just me! I thought maybe I just had…
Ah, I think youâll want to retract that statement. Literally, thereâs a page on MDL dedicated to helping fans understanding iQIYIâs heat index.
â Heat Index measures the investment and popularity of a drama. It takes into account the video views, search, and engagement for a drama. The way it is calculated is not really clear and is proper for the company. So, we can't compare it with other companies' heat index. Signification of iQiyi heat index (from my interpretation) :
A drama has some popularity when the index reaches 5 500/6 000 (5 500 for dramas that aired all the episodes the same day) A drama that reaches 9 000 is well known and really popular. A drama that reached 10k can be considered a super popular and successful drama (top drama from the platform). 10k is not the limit and the score can be higher. The comparison between dramas of the same company is not significant too. Depending on the actors, the IP's popularity, the drama's budget, etc..., the score's meaning is totally different. For a high-budget drama with popular actors and ip, reaching 7 500 is average. However, for a low budget with no so well-known actors and not-so-popular ip, reaching 7 500 shows that the drama is a success.â
Even if you think that the authorâs interpretation is incorrect, itâs a fact that most iQIYI dramas donât exceed 8000.
As for Yunhe, it tends to be a stronger indicator once the show has aired over 50% of its episodes which is why The Double first day scores were only moderately higher than FoFâs despite that fact that The Double had an A-lister FL and ML, quadruple the advertising, and bowed during the summer when school was out and people were in holiday.
The pacing is not the issue. It's the way the story unfolds using excessive flash-backs to push along/solving…
HmmâŠare you a really trying to say that GJM has as big a fanbase as A-list stars??? Are you trying to say that FoF was promoted heavily on the street, Weibo, etc.? Heck, even on MDL, there hasnât been a single article dedicated to it despite that fact that this page is one of the most active on the site. MDL even dedicated an article to The Story of Pearl Girl a few days before its scheduled to bow to help drum up business for it. The fact that FoF destroyed and continues to destroy better promoted, A lister headlined shows is incredible and deserves applause.
As for flashbacks slowing down the pacing or the pacing being slow thatâs also ridiculous. In 4 episodes, the first case was solved. In 9 episodes, we learned compelling backstories for four of the five demon hunters. If you want to talk about slow pacing letâs look at Yanxi Palace that took 20 episodes to identify the sisterâs killer and 70 episodes to bring him to justice. Yet, âpacingâ didnât keep it from being called a hit by many of the same people trying pan FoF.
As for flashbacks being ineffective, the other option is to have the characters encounter situations or people from their present that remind them of their past and then use exposition to fill in the gaps. I have a feeling that if GJM had used that method, there would be complainants from the same folks criticizing flashbacks. This time they would claim that the situations felt artificial and shoehorned in.
When flashbacks are done well - as they are in FoF - they provide a way to connect more deeply with the characterâs motivations because the audience can see and hear what the character experienced. Flashbacks tend not to be used in films because that format is too short to support that level of deeper insight. This is one of the reasons why Kevin Feige and the MCU released 21 movies before Endgame. They needed the time to provide compelling backstories for the main characters.
Now, maybe the MCU wasnât to your liking. Thatâs fine, but it also means that you are non representative of the majority opinion.
3) The Double was released on June 2nd. There was no competition from school nights and many people were on holiday. It had no reason to loose steam during the work week. Weâll see by next Monday if FoF performs like a show released in Fall, outside of a holiday weekend window, or if it performs like a show released in Summer. The fact that FoF hit 1.4M views on Doubanâs live TV index, during a Fall non-holiday weekend is extraordinary. And it did so without any A-listers
4) The Netflix comments are directly related to revenue potential. Residuals from foreign markets have become big business in recent years; just look at the Turkish TV industry. Netflix thought that The Double would resonate outside of China. It didnât. Netflix wants shows to succeed as badly as the Production companies because content providers need to retain and attract viewers to justify their stock prices. The Double flopping internationally is a big deal
