Dude, just give up🤦🏻‍♀️ You can measure a drama's performance in China by looking at their Yunhe views…
Oh Nina, why am I not surprised to see you. It makes sense that you’re the kind of person that doesn’t find it odd that 3k accounts created negative reviews all within the same 24hr period
Replying to Enigma05 Nov 1, 2024
Already? That’s quick. Many don’t release scores until the dramas at the halfway point or even at the end…
Beware, most of the low scores were posted on Nov 1 which is super weird. The site already had 5K reviews posted since it debuted. The score was never lower than 8.9. Then, suddenly, a few thousand reviews with low scores were published in less than 24hrs. That usually a good indication that sock puppets are involved

The Douban score…

As many of you know I have been interested in this show’s stats so I have been actively researching stats on multiple sites including Douban. From Oct 27-Oct 31, the score was never below 8.9. Even as late as 12pm ET, the score was still in that range. Plus the number of reviewers was already above 5K. Literally, overnight, a barrage of reviews in the 1 and 2 range were published. If you scroll through the reviews, you will see Nov 1st as the timestamp.

That’s very suspicious since the viewership was highest on Oct 30. It’s possible but, highly unlikely, that the several thousand reviewers held their score for 2 days and then published on the same date.

My understanding of Douban is that it’s the equivalent of IMDB in the West. This means that it’s driven by accounts that users create on the site. In addition Douban, like IMDB, has limited means to control the creation of fake accounts aka sock puppets.

This is a real problem on IMDB, and the main reason why most people and studios now disregard the IMDB scores. A few years ago, users and studios started noticing a pattern with negative scores and some movies. If the movie featured non traditional characters or non traditional actors in conventional roles, the scores were always significantly lower than content that was more traditional. This all came to a breaking point when The Black Panther was released. Despite overwhelmingly positive reviews from the audience, the IMDB score was in the low 7s. Investigations found that many of the reviewers were created by accounts that had not existed until a few hours or days before they posted. Investigations showed that it was possible to create accounts on a large scale to bombard the site.

It appears that the same thing is happening to FoF.

Title Fangs of Fortune Spoiler
I think there’s already a thread for guessing who’s in the 3-faced mask, but I can’t find it anymore. Too many posts…🥺

I think that the person is Mr. Fan. I haven’t watched episode 12 yet

what show is first
I’ve seen its name pop up in VLinkage and Douban stats but, honestly, I’ve never done any research on it. Hopefully, someone else on this page can help answer that question. 😄

Thank you for translating!

what show is first
That’s correct. It’s the Rise of Ning/Splendid Tranquility. It aired toward the beginning of October and just finished its run on Oct 29th.

It’s apparently very popular on the mainland, but it wasn’t that popular on this site. I also didn’t see many Hot posts for it on Weibo. It made it onto the list, but the avg number of views for posts & clips were in the high 20K to mid 30K range with a few being in the millions. Very similar stats to posts about FoF. All that to say that site demographics don’t always determine a shows popularity.

i'm a bit confused about something in ep 10
Yeah, it’s a rough ride IMO, but hang in there for episode 11

How on earth can you come to that conclusion? 🤣The Baize token just made its first full appearance in episode…
FYI, I’m not saying that you’re wrong. I’m just saying that I think it’s a little early to come to that conclusion. However, if we don’t see some consistently powerful moves from her by episode 20 or so…then I’m jumping on your train. 😁

But of all of the above, and our first introduction to the little brother is him shifting into a woman's shape,…
Interesting…I don’t feel like GJM was trying to say that either PSH or PSJ was more guilty than the other. Both were at fault for something that a lot of people are guilty of. PSJ is the one that survived it. Hopefully, now she can start to forgive herself. I feel like this “communicate things clearly and honestly before it’s too late” is a common theme in Classical Chinese literature. It really reminds me of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and the love story between Yu Shu Lien and Lu Mu Bai.

I find your analysis interesting, but I don’t know if I support your conclusion that GJM likes to make female characters suffer or that he wants us to believe that she is responsible for her brother’s weakness. I came away from the story feeling like their inability to express their feelings and desires honestly is what lead to the tragedy. I like that backstory has given insight into how she developed as a child. Without the flashback, I think she would have to explain the pain she suffered with words. I found the image of seeing her hands bleeding and torn to be more compelling. Thanks for sharing!

The story isn't that interesting either. GJM is a terrible script writer..
Yes, I compared two human men in the same profession. Besides, I thought you were going home and taking your toys with you…

You don’t see how introducing us to the fact that PSJ didn’t want to be a martial artist drives her character’s arc forward and builds that character’s depth? You don’t see how showing the physical pain she had to endure builds her character’s depth? You don’t see how seeing her brother in physical pain drove her to be the cold person she is today?

It feels like people are coming up with the weirdest reasons to criticize that character, actress or episode. I want to see more to find out if her parents had something to do with why she repressed her feelings so hard.

Based on your last statement, it appears that you are writing negative comments on this page about the story because you don’t like the director. If you don’t like then director then say that. But to complain that there are plot holes or pacing issues or the actor’s performance just because you don’t like the director is not acceptable. And I’m not just addressing you. There’s quite a few others that appear to have a secondary agenda with their negative comments.

As for GJM, he can definitely can be a jerk, however that doesn’t mean that he’s not a good storyteller or a compelling show maker. Alfred Hitchcock was an a**hole. Just look at how he treated Janet Leigh when he filmed Psycho. However, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t direct a great film. It doesn’t mean that the story was full of holes. It doesn’t mean that the performances weren’t good. Please separate the criticism of the director’s personality from the final product.
