I don't feel the FL is dumb at all. I like her character. She's been very well protected so she hasn't actually seen how horrible people can be. She's learning fast because she's super intelligent, and she's courageous and forthright, and unpretentious.

Plotting with an enemy to kill one's own general just to get his woman back, doesn't deserve a life, let alone the throne :(

I don't think it's a secret family. I believe it's the family of his fallen soldier. He has been looking for the families of his soldiers killed in battles so that he could support them in their living.
