I have been waiting like this whole quarintine season too like watch this, and it still hasnt been subbed. :/…
They're rather slow in subbing this type of historical dramas because they rely on volunteers, normally bi-lingual young people who would have preferred contemporary dramas or wuxia and xianxia. Many don't like this type of palace politics and harem stories. I find the recent Promise of Chang'an a better production than this one :).
does the Ml love the FL and does the ML haev kids with other concubines? does this haev a happy ending
The ML loves the FL. He also has one baby with his other concubine before FL accepts him (there's some misunderstanding), but the baby dies and the concubine becomes insane. By the end of this drama, yes, it's a happy ending, but it's not complete; there's the season 2. According to historical record, the FL disappeared, so I think it happens in season 2. Also he falls in love with another woman, which should also happen in season 2. I'm taking a hiatus before continuing to season 2.
The Promise of Chang'an reminds me why I didn't like to watch historical dramas in the old days, in particular the palace stuff. This is because most of these stories are very heart-breaking, portraying of all the pains of human life. I have become "braver" in the recent years, consuming historical dramas as soon as they're airing. Most of these are pretty light-hearted. The Promise of Chang'an is one of those "once in a blue moon" type - sad, depressing and yet realistic.
Despite how some viewers have condemned the storyline and how unsatisfactory they feel some of the characters are being written, and even my own fantasized alternative storyline/ending, I have thoroughly enjoyed this drama. For me, this is how a drama should be written, directed and acted.
Thanks goodness it's Friday again. So much catching up to do with this drama. I'm beginning to get intrigued by the plot. Read good comments here so I assume this continues to be a rather enjoyable drama. I also like Alan Yu a little better here, despite he's still rather stiff, moving not unlike a robot. I like the Ling Fang character, though sickly, a mastermind of everything, always a few steps ahead of the bad guys. Feels like Mei Changsu (Nirvana in Fire) to me without the charisma. Anyway still very satisfying.
I still cannot comprehend the action that Xiao Qirong takes - killing himself. He has not known Dong Ruoxuan that long or that well at all. How can he be in so much pain that he needs to take his own life? I get it when people kill themselves, normally with no explanation. I know he also wants to make Xiao Qiyuan and Dong Ruoxuan to feel guilty for the rest of their lives. Still, he's pretty, ...... sigh! I guess the writers want to punish his mother Qiao Hui Fei for all the evil things she has done. So far, for all these years, she has escaped unscathed. So, it's pay back time for her. Satisfying!
I'm thinking he doesn't get a big say in his roles, but rather his agency selects them for him. I'm hoping they…
I think he's already been type-casted. Look at his last few projects, they're all of similar painful/miserable characters. I think Cheng Yi does carry an air of melancholy with him. Even with him as a playful youth in this drama, he still gives us that melancholy feeling. He's already passed 30 years old now. Not many choices he will get if he's too selective :(
I think Zhen'er sympathizes with Qihan but not enough to love him. Qihan and Chengxu are nemesis. If she were to accept Qihan, that means she may have to come against Chengxu and Mingyu, which she would never do. She is very very smart, far smarter than Qihan.
Episode 50 is my favorite episode, and it's also the saddest episode. I cried a river. Funny enough, the knots…
For me, Mingyu and Xiao Qiyuan have redeemed themselves. Now, Xiao Chengxu is immortal. He finally maintains his dignity. Helan Mingyu's pain can be felt, and yet has to be hidden. I even forgive Xiao Qiyuan and Xiao Qirong. They seem to be a lovely pair of brothers. And I cannot believe now I find the uncontrollable personality of Xiao Qiyuan and his eye rolls adorable. What an incredible performance by the cast. Two thumbs up!

Bravo! Two thumbs up!
Episode 56, tears, tears and more tears.
