In the book the way XL first meets her as a female is unnecessarily mean and scheming, so it's great they added the angry scene to explain why.

FYI in the book she is written more sympathetically because Hou was using her all this time. She fell in love with Tushan Hou long ago when seeing him somewhere in town and agreed to marry into the Tushan family. She later found out Tushan Hou was not her betrothed and Hou was already married to a maid (his "mom" sucked and bethrothed him to a lowly person because he was the mistress' son) but Hou decided to seduce Fangfeng Yiying to vent his anger. Yiying liked Hou already so she helped Hou plot against Jing.

After Hou's wife dies Jing finds out Hou and Yiying are plotting to kill him too so he exposes their affair, then both Hou and Yiying are sent away but the child Tushan Zhen is kept on as his son because he does not blame the child. When the child fell sick before his wedding to Xiaoyao many years later, he visits the child and gets assassinated by Hou and Yiying who end up dying as well. Jing falls into the river and goes missing so he misses his wedding with Xiaoyao.

Well in a lucky situation he wouldn't be tortured til he became crippled and scarred, wouldn't marry his brother's lover, wouldn't raise his brothers kid and would marry someone he likes in the first instance without any hijinks?
