Jing is not stupid, he is scheming but mostly romantically, his nickname in China is Green Tea Fox🍵 green tea means cunning petty lover and usually applies to women. he's basically characterised like the head concubine of Xiaoyao's harem 🤭

- He knew who he was but lied that he didn't have a home or name
- He has a fiancee but promises another person to love them forever lol

IMO Jing is an intentional subversion of typical female character and female fox spirit tropes (when Jing first appeared without bandages it was like a stereotypical FL Post Makeover slomo entrance scene but subverted because he was the beauty and Xiaoliu was gawking😆) as this is a female directed and written drama. Jing's smarts are used to get the FL which is fitting as he is a male fox spirit, Cangxuan wants power, and Xiangliu wants to fight wars.

Xuan is the current Xiyan Emperor's eldest grandson and one of those in line to the Xiyan throne. He hides at the Kingdom of Haoling with his teacher the Haoling King because there is conflict between his family and his uncles over the Xiyan succession. The Fangfeng family supports Xuan's uncles to inherit the Xiyan kingdom and not him so they try to assassinate him since he isn't very powerful yet, but once Xiaoyao returns he decides to fight his uncles for the throne so he can help her in case her illegitimacy is discovered.

King of Haoling divorced Ah Hang to let her go with Chiyou even though he loved her. King of Haoling knows Xiaoyao is not his child but wants to protect her anyway because he loves Ah Hang

War God Chiyou's notoriety is similar to how Xiangliu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xiangliu is hated and feared as a 9 headed snake that is infamous in battle. If Xiaoyao married her cousin ML and had a kid with Xiangliu who is an enemy of her kingdom her reputation would be tainted too, and imo even if she likes Xiangliu she's too practical to ever copy her mother and get together with a mythical monster on the opposite side lol

She is her mum's bio daughter but the Haoling King's is not her biological father like that rumor said. What CX means is he has to protect her by becoming king himself because she is an illegitimate child and he thinks Haoling will not want her someday.

Also toward the end when Xiaoyao visits the slave tribe which uses voodoo bugs to undo it she tells them her cousin is King and will abolish slavery and reduce prejudice so that's the kind of person CX is.
