From the early episodes onward, I kept waiting for that internal shift — a spark, a pull, something that would…
I'd say your review is. The drama is one you greatly appreciated but did not enjoy

I dont get why they keep making vertical series
Its honestly a horrible trend. I also watch cdramas and that cheap mini drama feel is bleeding into long form dramas also

Kill to LoveJourney with you
Of course if you want a bigger budget /grander plotline I can recommend bromances (which you probably know about already)

1. Fangs of fortune (gorgeous cinematography)
2. The Untamed
3. Word of Honor
4. My Country the New Age

i wish i could watch it all over again
honestly I miss watching modern kdramas so much, but none of them have the same vibe as the ones I used to love. Have you seen Start Up, Hotel Del Luna, While you were sleeping, Because This is My First Life Castaway Diva etc. They were so magical and inspiring and uplifting. I feel like dramas these days are either too gritty and depressing, or so lighthearted and saccharine that they lack any depth...At least I feel like I get a better balance with historical dramas. Also I'm on like episode 66 of Empresses in the Palace. When I tell you these past eps I'm literally covering my face, the second hand embarrassment is just too much.

Why did the ratings drop? Is the plot not that good? I haven't started watching it yet because I'm waiting for…
Its best to watch dramas for yourself, some of my favourite dramas, Goodbye My Princess, The First Jasmine etc get a lot of hate that it can make you apprehensive to watch a drama but when i sat down and watched it for myself I really loved it!On the flipside dramas that people praise, for example Nirvana in Fire, I struggled to enjoy it. Everyone has their own taste for shows, some people judge a show on how good it is based on how much romance there is, some look to production quality and some people care about plots and characters. Always take any opinions with a grain of salt!

I guess some viewers may not like the cinematography or the choppy editing, especially compared with other C-dramas.…
I've only seen the trailer for now but I thought the cinematography was quite good?

yup, their chemistry is like roiling under the water. It's simply so subtle, but it's so happening. I like it…

Wow you really must have a love hate relationship with The Long Ballad lol, it does seem quite grand and epic, very different to the kind of dramas that release today. I think if I ever read the manhua it would be after finishing the drama. The only thing making me apprehensive is that part of the reason I watch dramas is to see the female leads in pretty clothes, hairpins and jewellery and the FL mainly dresses like a man (?) majority of the time which isn't that appealing to me, but if the plot is popping I can overlook it.

Yes I actually purchased volume 1 of Otoyometagari recently, I adore the art to pieces. If you like that and Chang Ge Xi you will love the anime Jaadugar A witch in Mongolia (focused on Mongolian tribes, a beautiful, heartbreaking anime) and The Apothecary Diaries. I'll check Emma out.

Legend of Xiao Chuo is based on Khitan tribes which is why I thought you may be interested I've seen only a trailer of it, but the costumes, cinematography and cultural practices are a marvel to look at. Three sisters are married into different kingdoms and are at odds politically.

I think Novoland Eagle flag is a fantasy. Definitely check out the trailer when you have a chance, the budget and grand scale of it blew me away, I plan to watch it soon. Maybe this year?

And don't worry the Long Ballad is deffo on my watchlist, I kind of view it as "essential cdrama costume viewing" sort of like Nirvana in Fire (which I didn't like lol)

are you by any chance talking about a different novel? bcz this drama's OG novel is NOT BL
Actually both you and OP are correct. OP has probably mixed up this drama with a BL novel called 'An Empire as Betrothal Gift', which has a similar plot to Jiang Shan Wei Pin!

I love the plot for this drama. A female official! And it stars one of my favourite actresses. Love a political plot
