I was thinking of watching it because of WCR and ZLH, but then I saw it only has a 7.4 on MDL, which is pretty…
I think people had very high expectations for this drama especially those who were coming from Pursuit of Jade. Anyways its best to watch a few eps for yourself to see if you like it. Personally the drama is not my taste, but it deffo works for some people

You welcome for the recs! And yes I deffo recommend Joy of Life, I would say keep watching until episode 7 that was when I was hooked! I know its not as flashy as dramas nowadays, but the plot and script is GOOD,and Fan Xian is an incredible character!!! The Eternal Fragrance didn't really interest me, its looks a little tacky, however Ju Jingyi has another drama coming called Let's fight, I watched the trailer, the graphics are gorgeous

I thought Meng Ziyi was good in the Untamed (granted I've only seen a few eps of it) but her acting was very natural and I felt she embodied the character very well, not sure why she changed so much.

What type of English speaking shows do you watch? I've never seen any western drama similar to Goodbye My Princess, the scope and grandness of the story, the toxic and enduring love, the gorgeous and natural cinematography and landscapes, there is nothing like it. I have written a review for it, but it does have spoilers: https://www.reddit.com/r/CDrama/comments/1oqd8a3/goodbye_my_princess_is_a_breathtaking_masterpiece/

Angsty, emotionally heavy dramas
Western dramas (English speaking)
Not gonna lie, I don't really watch many western dramas in comparison to cdramas, but here are some I like:
1. Anne with An E (very heartwarming, I love this drama)
2. Game of Thrones (definitely angsty for sure, very vulgar at times though just a warning

Kdramas
1. My Dearest (100% angsty) this drama made me bawl my eyes out and I don't cry easily, it is heartwrenching and has absolutely stunning cinematography. The story is also grand and epic in scope, it felt like a cdrama
2. My Country the New Age, deffo heartbreaking, and has a really good bromance

Cdramas
1. The Double, I thought everybody acted their socks off in this drama, and I really felt the emotions of the characters
2. Joy of Life, deffo was emotionally heavy at times, I felt for Fan Xian so much. This is also my no1 most favourite drama (in general exceeding all categories) ever, hence why Fan Xian (the ML) is my profile picture. This drama is so unique, I'll never watch something like it again.
3. The First Jasmine (a newer drama but deffo got very angsty towards the end. It has the most beautiful soundtrack ever)

This year i also want to try and get more into xianxia dramas/fantasy dramas. I'm usually a bit terrified of all the CGI and stuff but I want to get more out of my comfort zone, and since I like angst so much I'm probably missing out by not checking out at least one xianxia. I've seen Whispers of Fate though which was very good

POJ had an ai generated opening credit too... most cdramas have full on or partially ai generated opening credits…
I also feel like the TFJ had an AI generated intro as well

I actually think its good that people are calling out the terrible AI generated intro (which sets a poor tone for the series as a whole) the messy cinematography, script and editing. If we just hype up dramas because of attractive/popular leads it sets a precedent for dramas going forward that this type of quality is acceptable for audiences. The problems are only exacerbated as a lot of people have come from the drama Pursuit of Jade which is a visual spectacle

Why have you dropped the series? I'm contemplating watching.
I'm watching Empresses in the Palace right now (its a very long drama at 76 episodes) I do have Blossoms of Power on my watchlist though! I'm not the biggest fan of the FL, I like when actresses show emotions on their face, I do find the ML of the drama very charming. I think the rebirth plot is very interesting for sure.

Goodbye My Princess is one of my all time favourites!!! I do recognise its not for everyone, its very, very angsty and the romance isn't romantic so its not everybody's cup of tea. But I adored it to bits.

Honestly I haven't explored many other genres in the cdrama space. I originally started watching kdramas and I usually would watch modern kdramas, then I slowly moved into watching western period dramas. The first ever costume drama I watched was Flourished Peony, once I saw that I've not been able to watch a modern drama since 😂

Yeah so right now I'm deep in a costume/historical/fantasy phase. However that doesn't mean I'll watch a drama just because its historical. I don't care if a drama is an "idol" drama or not. I guess I look for a drama to be immersive, I want to be swept up into the world and enchanted by the costumes, cinematography, social conventions etc. I don't like dramas that are solely romantic, but have a very meaty plot with political schemes. I also think having layered and strong characters is important.

Since you like comedy you might love the drama Mr Queen! I laughed a lot watching that (its a kdrama).

I also love angsty, emotionally heavy dramas (but I don't mind dramas with comedic elements from time to time) so cdramas are honestly perfect for me.

this will forever have a special place in my heart <3
oh, hello again! I'm actually planning on continuing LLTG after I finish EIP. I watched 17 eps of LLTG in my early drama watching days (that being 2025 when I first started watching, but I dropped it), but now that I've watched more cdramas I feel like I'll be able to better appreciate the drama

Dropped this drama at ep 17 last year, but now that I've watched a few more cdramas I feel like trying to watch it again. The cinematography, scale and scope of the characters and plotlines is unlike any of the new cdramas releasing today.

Thank you! Since you've dropped this, what are you watching right now? And what are you excited for? I've only ever seen Lin Yunrui in Love Like the Galaxy (a drama I still want to finish watching someday)

Thank you so much for your response! It's very insightful. Tbh I did check out the trailers for this drama and I watched perhaps 20 minutes of episode 1. I'm sure its not a terrible show, but I really didn't like the cinematography, colour grading, even the makeup, it looked very amateur-ish. And yes I have a very specific taste in dramas which means I usually end up skipping a lot of the new dramas that drop every month. I'm quite new to cdramas (only started watching in 2025), so I'm still figuring out what shows work for me and what don't. I think I always look for depth and richness in plot and characters. I am extremely excited for Sea of No Return which has similar vibes I feel to Key to the Phoenix heart, but looks like a much more high budget and "mature" production.
