This is due to cities and states not wanting to always report on each individual violent crime, because it makes their city/state look like a high crime area. This is especially true in areas that are already hi-crime like LA... if LA press reported every violent crime that happened, it would be a list a mile long.
However.... even in a high crime area, a crime such as the one described seems to me like a highly reportable incident. Even if the FBI took over the investigation and then wouldn't confirm they are working that case (which happens all the time), there could plausibly be some evidence of the alleged incident if anyone happened to be listening to police scanners in the area at that time, or if 911 dispatch recorded a 911 call about it.
The problem with that is in airports, there are so many different types of LEO's that could have been the first responders, and not all of them have a way of the public knowing about it. If the first responders were cops, it could be on 911 calls or recordings of police scanners, but if the first responder was Fire, EMT, US Marshalls, TSA, or FBI then there might not be such publicly available info.
