I spontaneously decided to watch this and I can’t say I regret my decision. This drama was really fun to watch in the beginning but it just progressively got worse. I loved FL at first but as time went on I just could not stand her character. There was very little character development. Be prepared for 14 or 15 1hr10m plus episodes of FL constantly hiding and running away and being an overall spineless coward. She just lets people do shit to her while she stands and sits around quietly it’s so fucking frustrating. She only finally gets some guts and self confidence after everyone finds out what she actually looks like but for around 14 episodes she just hates herself with no gains in her self confidence whatsoever. Seo Jun’s sister is so much braver than her tbh. I thought their interactions would make Ju Kyoung finally realize her worth but she continues to be annoying and self hating. The way she constantly tried hiding her relationship also got pretty tiring. It’s even crazier that she forgave her mother so quick. Some might find her forgiving and overly nice attitude sweet but I just found it annoying throughout. Why was she that mad at the girl that Se Rim picks on for siding with the bullies (although she had no choice) but not her mother for years of verbal and mental abuse. Her mother was truly an unlikeable character. Making Soo Jin into a villain was so dumb and out of nowhere too. It was literally so out of character for her to do what she did that even everyone else was surprised. You’re telling me she did all of that over a MAN?!!?!!!?? The plot of this drama relies a lot on convenient unlikely coincidences and dumb misunderstandings. One thing I really liked about this drama though was it’s comedic elements. I don’t know if this drama was supposed to be a social critique of lookism or something but if it was, it didn’t do a great job of addressing it.

Side note: I can’t be the only one who saw parallels between this story and the real lived experience of queer people. Like try watching this and pretend that Ju Kyoung is gay or something instead of ugly, the story would still make sense. And honestly it would probably make more sense considering she really wasn’t ugly and I doubt its common for people to be bullied like she was simply for being ugly.

I know its more commentary than bl but wasnt he in a bl pairing in the effect
Honestly I don’t remember lol. The effect feels like a fever dream id rather forget. All I remember was him playing that same quirky and cheeky friend character he often plays.

That’s it? Will there be a second season? Wtf??? I don’t exactly understand why people are complaining about how the actors don’t look like their anime counterparts. That really isn’t an important part of the story or an important visual aspect.

I ended up skipping most of the romance cause I wasn’t all that interested but they were cute. My favourite characters were eunuch jo and officer jang. I wish officer jang had more screen time😭

Yes and yes. Romance is not the focus. even though it's listed as a romance genre. And you can always tell by…
Some of the most widely loved and critically acclaimed stories/books/plays/dramas/movies out there are tragedies. Think of a classic like Romeo and Juliet. Both Romeo and Juliet die at the end and yet it is still widely loved and praised. And what exactly do you mean by a “toxic” ending? I don’t understand the use of that adjective in this context. Some stories are not meant to have a happy ending. Especially when based in reality. And it’s not always about what you want either. For example in the case of Romeo and Juliet, ofc we as the audience would want and prefer for them to end up together alive and happy and ride of into the sunset. But their tragic ending is still as beautiful as it tells of their love for each other. Again, I think it has to do with why you’re watching what you’re watching. For example in the BL community ik a lot of people specifically look for only happy ending dramas because a lot of media involving gay couple or characters have historically not had happy endings.

A happy ending doesn’t mean it’s a good ending and a sad ending doesn’t mean it’s a bad ending. I don’t think they’re in the minority tbh. I only ever see this obsession with happy endings on MDL and kdrama circles. I guess it’s about whether you watch the drama for escapism or realism.

After Nam Jeon who is literally walking, breathing evil, the scum of the earth, a cockroach/rat/mosquito hybrid disguised as a man, and a greedy parasite, Seon Ho was my least favourite character. Those last 1/2 episodes where he finally gained a working brain cell weren’t enough to redeem him or for me to like him. Maybe I’m blinded by my dislike for him, but that bromance that everyone’s talking ab between him and Hwi… I didn’t see it. I loved the character of Bang Won. Not as a person but I loved the way they wrote him. I also loved the role the Kisaeng house played in all the politics. The ending was fitting.

Loved this drama a lot. My only qualm is that i feel like the writers tried so hard to keep us guessing up until the very end who taekyoung would choose that they ended up trading more taekyoung x shinwoo falling in love with each other moments for keeping us guessing. Like what was the point of ep 15 where they made us think taekyoung would choose da on or something. Either way im happy with his final choice and im happy with the ending. That scene with Mr. Seo though is still a mystery and i hope theyre teasing an upcoming drama about him. Im gonna miss namgung the most :((

Why exactly is Arisu as smart as he is? Theres never really an explanation for that other than that he plays games…
Also loved the inclusion of a trans character who is actually important and their trans identity isnt just some comedic plot point or something thats taken lightly and mocked like it often is in animes.

There is also a whole lot of unnecessary on screen dying, especially in the last episodes. Just people dying everywhere. It was pointless and just added gore for edgy points imo. Wasnt the biggest fan of those last two to three episodes.

Why exactly is Arisu as smart as he is? Theres never really an explanation for that other than that he plays games but those games didnt seem to necessarily have much to do with those he played in borderland. Also was anyone else so frustrated by how it didnt even cross their minds for like the first 5 episodes that they might be the ones who disappeared and not everyone else from tokyo and japan???? Like why were they saying shit like "That place might be where everyone disappeared/went to" 💀 the ending really left us with so many questions still and that makes me excited for season 2 (im burning netflix down if they cancel it)

Im not one to cry much when watching movies or dramas but this show had so many heartfelt moments that made me shed tears, both happy and sad. I was going in thinking that there would be a whole lot more evil spirit catching but instead I there was a complex political conspiracy that just sucks you in and makes you feel as angry and frustrated as So Mun and others who were affected by it. The acting was phenomenal imo. The actors really embodied their characters. And damn so mun really knows how to cry contagiously. The chemistry between the counters and so muns friends and grandparents is so beautiful. There were many scenes where it seemed like they werent acting at all, just improvising with things they would actually say to each other.

This drama is very heavy on the evil side, good side thing though. The bad people are just bad because theyre bad and do bad things and there is not much of an explanation or reasoning as to why. Except for Ji Cheong Sin's and Hyuk Woo's daddy issues (which is honestly a really weak explanation for their behaviour). Also, So Mun suffers from what i like to call "male lead in shounen anime syndrome"... make of that what you will.

I thought the weird way that the monsters looked would take away from the drama but i ended up not really minding it. I really liked it although i thought it would be more horror than it actually was. Gory horror like this doesnt scare me as much as it disgusts me lol. They really took their time with letting us fall in love with the characters and giving us glimpses into their life pre-monsters. They had flaws but the writers did a good job at also making the audience empathize with them imo. I especially liked sang wooks character development. Really excited to see where this will head for season 2.
