Family's Honour is one of my favourite family dramas. PSH was very memorable in that drama. I loved his angst…
LOL, I think you may have started it after I had praised it, b/c I clearly remember I was very happy you liked it and gave it the same rating as I.... although mine included extra point just for PSH, I was drama-stalking him at the time XD
Yes!! The Grandpa is one of my faves, and the little boy ... Both were wise. I must resume watching this so I can be part of the final conversations, and compare thoughts w/ u.
So..I am really split...on one hand I am really looking forward to this remake..but the casting has me worried...Tik´s…
I so agree w/ u.... Tik's recent bad acting may destroy all the Charm of the King, who is a complex character: Commanding presence, scary yet romantic, intelligent yet childish and witty w/ a dry sense of humor .... I loved Num's dead-pan delivery in the 1996 version <3 Why Tik? ... Not sure who among the young Ch3 actors can pull it off .... Since the same age as Tik, Chakrit would have nailed this role!! ... But I know my beloved Chakrit is not aging well, but how I would love to see him w/ Kim XD
I like Kim, and I don't find her bitchy, like some others do ..... I only hope she can portray the Regal Grace and Gentleness of the princess.... I am sure she can pull off the confidence well, but doubtful she can tone it down to be gracefull ... Again, Nat was very good in the original version.
Yeah, I'm doubtful of the chemistry too.
One more point, I doubt the current Ch3 writers can pull off the witty script of the original. I sound very negative, but that is my attitude towards many of the new lakorns. :P
it's certainly worth a watch. My only real criticism is the lack of development for Aki. Aki's perfectly acceptable…
I agree w/ @fanitha ... I see it as growth for Aki, as subtle as it may seem, she was fundamentally changed after loving Haru (or rather it brought out her real self), no longer the same conventional girl, that just " lets life happen to her."
" i have trouble believing someone as passionate and motivated as Haru could find lasting happiness with a person like Aki who just lets life happen to her. " ... I often feel that way w/ passive obedient female leads .... Not the case w/ Aki ... She may not have been as outgoing or as fun as Haru, but that is not what he craved in his beloved, She balanced him out, grounded him and gave him the reliability and stability he needed. She also had a underlying passionate side (well-hidden), shown by her interest in someone like Haru.
@cityhunter I wonder if u simply dislike this type of heroine, or is it specifically Aki .. Personally, I strongly dislike the meek, obedient, passive female ... but I found Aki , although gentle, is intelligent, brave and independent.
I enjoyed your analysis, thnx for writing this. Like you, I hesitated due to the sports theme, and I was surprised I enjoyed that part as well. The scenes seemed real and the camera angles relayed the excitement. ... The reason I found the sports theme and scenes interesting is b/c those scenes were about more than just showing a team's win, or a player's performance - those scenes often revealed something else which helped propel the plot forward ..... That is good writing! Interesting that u didn't much mention the romance, it was emotional and passionate, one of the best romances in J-dramas I've seen.
It never occurred to me the music director didn't translate "Fat Bottomed Girls". ..LOL... Still, must give credit to J-dramas for often using classic rock and this music director specifically , for choosing Queen <3.
it's certainly worth a watch. My only real criticism is the lack of development for Aki. Aki's perfectly acceptable…
I agree w/ ur point about Aki, her character is not as well-developed as Haru's, but that fact did not bother me. Also, her growth was subtle, she was no longer willing to stay safe and accept her fiancee, she learned to step out of her safe space and take a chance on Haru.
To think what Kurosawa and Mifume made w/ a simple 'held-for-ransom' storyline !!!! .... The stars were perfectly aligned in the universe when these two collaborated!
If anyone is looking for something similar while waiting for subs, I highly recommend FAMILY'S HONOR Both family dramas, both starring Park Si Hoo, both about a rich boy getting w/ a girl his parents don't like .... Several couples, including a younger couple w/ a shy girl having a crush, and an older couple. I only reached ep. 32 here, but Family's Honor seems to have a deeper meaning so far , about traditional values vs. contemporary values based on money , etc... Although, so far, I like the lively lead female in My Golden Life better.
Funny enough, his house in FH is the same house used here!
Notes to self (review later): Overall dark , both the photography and theme. Even the harsh winter landscape, leaves a dark feeling. Perhaps it symbolizes the reality of the harsh world that ridicules Kameda the innocent soul, "the idiot" , for being socially awkward and not functioning w/in society's norms and intricacies Like many Kurosawa films, about those sneered at or rejected by society; a film w/ depth displaying Kurosawa's humanist attitude and sensibility.
However, I couldn't figure out why the story telling did not seem smooth, or as impactful as expected , especially considering it is based on Dostoevsky's famous novel of the same name .
Now, I have just found out , that the film was originally 4 hrs long and the studio cut it down to 166min. much to Kurosawa's objections and dismay :((((
No wonder!!! .... A combination of Dostoevsky and Kurosawa should have been a masterpiece as soulful as these two geniuses.... I bet the original 4hrs was a masterpiece.
"One and Only Leung Tony" , "You're the man!" ... I say u r da man, Ana , or rather da woman! I want to Thank you, Congratulate you, hug you, kiss you, for writing this wonderful guide ..... We should all thank you that now, living legend Tony Leung Chiu-Wai , finally has a guide on MDL!!! ... Your passion and respect for him is evident in the many details and analysis you provide <3<3 .... and you chose such wonderful Photos, especially the ones w/ Takeshi *wink* *wink*
I second everything said below, in the comments .... I would watch anything with him , he makes acting seem effortless ... I read somewhere that Robert DeNiro is one of his biggest fans and admires his talent. I also read that he is not interested in a Hollywood career (despite his beautiful British English.)
It's hard to believe that most legends and icons of Asian cinema don't have guides here :( ... especially HK actors, ... Thanks to you, at least now both Tony and Takeshi have guides <3
Btw, you mention so many amazing actors in your article, they all need guides: Leslie , Andy , Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi, Cheung Maggie , etc ....etc... Also, Tony mentioned Christopher Boyle in the interview you posted ... he also deserves a guide, he is such an integral part of HK cinema , as important as the actors and directors ! So, when r u going to write about Wong Kar-wai , now that directors are listed on MDL? I'll remind you again: I look forward to ur article on HK romances ;) ... Am I nagging too much!? XD
P.S. I highly recommend you watch Eagle Shooting Heroes, if you have not .... My first time watching Tony in a comedic role and he's wonderful .... I couldn't believe he was doing Three Stooges moves and sounds ...Hillarious!
You're welcome and thanks. ;) I am really happy that there are other true fans here who respect and love this…
@Asianatic , where did you find Duke of Mount Deer w/ eng subs?? .... I have been dying to watch HK dramas from the 80's, sooooo many amazing actors , I luv them all: Little Tony, Andy, Leslie, Carina, Maggie, etc.... etc...
Tik sleep-walked through the scenes ... no chemistry of main couple ... plot was inconsistent , dull and contrived ... It had a few good moments, mostly dealing w/ May Davika, that's it.
This is very very good .... I watched it raw , but watched the newer version to get an idea of the plot and characters (did not like the new version at all :P) .....
Classic Chakrit <3<3<3 ...and Katreeya is wonderful! Prince Kamin is crazy cute w/ his jealousy ! .... Lots of fun antics b/w the main couple .... ofc Chakrit is great at showing jealousy and angst .... Not the the usual cliches, no craziness, no fillers .... Fun Fun Fun !!!
Note to Self: I should raise my rating for this when I re-evaluate my lakorn scores .... It has stood the test of time, I recall many scenes, still very good and fun.
Revenge fizzled out, the older version of this remake is said to have been done better
I watched the older version raw after watching this (I only watched this to get and idea of the plot and characters) .... The older version is much much better, and Chakrit is Chakrit, I don't need words to understand him <3
In this version, I only liked Mai Davika's Risa ... Maybe b/c this is subbed, I liked her "I won't take crap from anyone attitude" ... she is only slightly better than the Risa of older version, maybe!?
