It's unsophisticated, don't try to pretend there's an educational aspect to this series.
It lead me to read about Unit 731 so I would say it did educate in a sense. I am not commenting on the series but rather why a director needs to defend talking about what happened during that war (regardless of how well it was presented- of which we have differing opinions on the drama).
The hsitorical backround: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_731Shiro Ishii (General Kato in S1): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shir%C5%8D_Ishii
"Those captured by the US military were secretly given immunity.[11] The United States helped cover up the human experimentations and handed stipends to the perpetrators."- unsurprising yet completely disturbing. Still what the states are doing till today.
Both these articles are triggering so for other's who come across the above comment- click with caution. It is nightmare inducing stuff, more than any fictional drama produced by Netflix.
Not sure what the issue is if it was anti-Imperial Japan and not against modern day Japan? Japan, like every other country that tried to oppress others (including the States, Gitmo anyone?) has committed horrible war crimes, which includes human experimentation? Instead of pretending that didn't happen or brushing it under the rug, it's better to talk about the horrors of these incidents so we can remember to not let them happen again. And it's clear we need these reminders seeing as what is currently happening in the world.
Can anyone let me know who is this princess Wan Ning? What is her relationship with the emperor? Why is she such…
From my understanding, she's the emperor's twin sister and one of the main antagonists. I haven't finished this drama (and I doubt I will) but it seems like she was sent away to another country as a hostage so she uses that as a reason to do whatever she wants, and the emperor can't fight directly against her because she has "previously suffered".
Got as far as episode 32. I have to say the acting and story isn't bad, however it's just too dragged out with too many filler side quests that really made me lose interest in the original revenge story. The romance between the leads also so far is lukewarm at best (and at 32 they still aren't together).
The cinematography whilst beautiful is overly dramatic. I feel the director just loved too many dramatic angles of the same shot a bit too much. It's a great shot if used once every few episode but this was every single episode the multiple angles and close ups. It took away from the acting quite a lot.
If this was 30 episodes, with less characters and less side plots that were taking too long to complete I would have really liked this drama more. It just dragged on to the point where I didn't care about whether she got her revenge or not.
First half was great, second half was mess with the FL getting more and more useless and stupid as the story progressed. Really don't understand why writers shoot themselves in the foot like this. I basically skipped through the last 3rd of this drama.
This can be skipped to be honest, the second half made me feel like I wasted the better half of the night watching this.
Good at the start and then completely lost it's plot which is a same because the production value was pretty good. If you are here for the romance (like I was) you'll be disappointed. There's little of it and it began to feel like the FL had more scenes with everyone but the ML. Skip this one.
Very toxic at the start and then suddenly changes tone, a messy plot but the acting was really good and the chemistry between the leads. Fun to watch if you don't want to think but can be a little triggering with the toxic male lead at the start.
It is quite boring in my opinion. The second half isn't any better and overall is just bland with some high points.…
I agree with all your points, esp the fish kisses. I actually don't mind resets in plot lines if done correctly! (lovely runner comes to mind)...this just was tooo boring.
First life (after the cat one) was ok, second was such a drag I forced myself to watch it, so by the time it reached the 3rd life I had lost all interest. It's such a waste of a potentially amazing plot. They could have made it sooo much better. I feel bad for the actors and crew cause they were clearly trying but the writing dragged it down to boredom.
Actually enjoyed it though it took me a while to warm up to this drama, the first few episodes where a little boring and didn't catch my interest. Only once the main leads started interacting more did this drama start to really take shape. Thank god for the chemistry between then from the get go.
I really like how Xie Wei was written and like other comments below really don't understand how the same writer wrote Ninge'r. She gets to go back in time and it feels like she does nothing. I feel like this was such a wasted opportunity - she could have easily been written smarter and wittier but she was almost always still an icy damsel in distress. Despite the weak character Bai Lu did portray her really well and she had on screen chemistry with everyone.
Too much of the story was wasted on the second ML, I wish they had dedicated more time building the romance between the leads instead of relying on "you are the only one that saved me before".
The OST was really good and fight scenes fun to watch (if a little OTT). Would recommend this if you like political strategies and late in the drama romance.
Ep 10 and my interest has dwindled. Given that it's reliving a life they could have had so much fun with this plot device (other dramas have) but this is really like watching grass grow. They barely show what went wrong in the past life for us to watch the main leads ensure it doesn't happen here. I think judging from the reviews and the comments below I'm going to give this a miss.

Ending could have been much much better
