Zumba scene was weird indeed but I think it is tied to the PEEPS or whatever the name is of one of the sponsors....

"I am surprised that Korean dramas don't commonly have male tsunderes." - This statement couldn't be more wrong…
My response is to the article. I dont watch k dramas. In some ways, I am being cynical.

Not all coming out has to be dramatic. Some is just "I'm me" and we all move on. Not all of them needs bells and…
LOL Good points. My coming out was pretty dramatic so I sort of like the dramatic ones but if yours was not, then of course you are gonna be OK with non-dramatic ones.

This one however was written as a pretty dramatic one. The scene reminded me a bit of He's Coming to Me (both scenes take place in a couch with the actors facing each other). The difference of course is the acting: in the BTS of He's Coming to Me, I learned that the actress who played the mother was not supposed to cry. She said that she was supposed to be "strong for [her] son" and that she felt that in that particular scene, it would be bad if she cried. She says that Ohm made her cry because he had real tears and so she couldn't hold back herself and it ended up being a very tender scene where the actors embraced and comforted each other for real. I have to say, I cried watching that BTS. Ohm is a superb actor.

I think Miko did well for how hard these kinds of scenes are but it was definitely not as dramatic as it was written to be IMO.

Well, I think that in the very first episodes it did feel a bit forced but I felt it was more the script than the director sort of bringing them closer than what would be otherwise organically normal...

Aki has had a couple of good scenes. The guy who plays his dad is a terrible actor but I thought Aki did really good in that confrontation with his dad. He also was great, if not a bit nervous, in the kissing scene.

This director loves to allow the actors to be themselves in front of the camera so you get a lot of real moments, like Aki's nervous smile when he was about to kiss Miko and Miko's constant laugh when they did the bed scene. It is a nice touch IMO.

But you can tell by Episode 9 that these actors are VERY comfortable with each other. I mean, the whole banter and jokes in Ep 9 seem very real and are very typical of real BFs IME. I loved it!

So it finally hit me what makes the SoloGui scenes uncomfortable (besides the stiff acting). So Solo is an orphan and he is younger. He is also the Seme... Now Gui is the older guy but he is the Uke.... Gui is "motherly" (he is Uke, so I guess the author think he has to be feminine, ugh) and Solo behaves like a child.

You know what, in heterosexual romantic stories I HATE THIS TROPE. Like a man needs a women because he needs to be treated like a CHILD. really? Oh, I abhor this trope so much. Now I may not watch this at all. Sorry Kao, you are adorable but this is going to annoy me a lot now that I realized it.... (I read about some spoiler that made me see Gui is the Uke, which lead me to this realization)....

That is just disgusting... ewww.... The author needs to be slapped not given a contract for a tv show.

boring?

I am stuck on 4. I finished 3. Started 4 to see if it got better and then I gave up and haven't tried to watch again... Maybe I will try to watch this weekend but this is it. I have more interesting things to watch at the moment like My Day or My Extraordinary.

Our job isn't to write reviews that agree with your opinions - if you don't want to hear contrary opinions, then…
I don't think I can like this comment enough!

BTW I agree with you 100% but I will say that, as you pointed out, something like DBK can use tired and tired (I am tired 2x) tropes and yet seem better because the acting or the production elevates the whole project. I think this is the case for My Day the series or Gameboys (well, Gameboys is very smartly written too and superbly acted).

I think I am ok with actors growing into the characters (e.g. My Day or Love sick) or actors who miss the mark sometimes (e.g. New in DBK or Bright in 2gether), but the problem with Oxygen is that Solo is just terrible and when he is supposed to look "cute", he looks stupid IMO. I think Gui is a much better actor. In fact, I think he brings in some energy to the scene right as Solo is sucking the energy out of it, so at least we have to give him credit for that. He is not super attractive but he is at least more attractive than Solo.

Yeah, I think this show at this moment has way to high of a rating. Even TharnType, with all its flaws and 2gether with all its controversies are better shows than this.

(confession: I haven't watched episode 4. I did not like the ending of Episode 3. I am having a hard time pushing myself to watch. Also, Kao may be cute and talented but his story is not believable enough for me to keep watching. )

I get you....

IDK I still think acting is the biggest issue in this sort of "big" scene. Aki can deliver but not Miko. Now, having said that, Miko is getting better.

I also think that coming out scenes are not that easy to do. I have seen many movies and a couple of shows try it and either fail or under deliver. Gameboys and He's Coming to Me are the two best coming out scenes I have seen in recent years.

No. I think it is the acting. Gameboys pulled some really silly humor with some dramatic scenes.

I love love love Miko Gallardo but he is no Elijah or Kokoy.

However, Miko is not bad. He is getting better and better. His coming out scene wasn't terrible. It just wasn't at the level of Gameboys or He's Coming To Me.

I disagree. Gameboys is well written. The overall plot is well laid out and all the pieces fit together.

I didnt see much fanservice. I mean, it is very yaoi yes but it is also queer.

One of the best things about Gameboys is that queer pov. It is producers, writers and directors are queer.

I too live in the states but I am in my 40s and being gay and coming out was not that easy for me so maybe thats why Gameboys resonates with me.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!!

I agree.... I have watched a couple of Thai dramas and J-dramas, and I have seen many of these tropes.

Interesting.... This is a common trope in Japanese doramas, at least in shojo manga derived dramas . Such a character is called a tsundere. I am surprised that Korean dramas don't commonly have male tsunderes.

I thought that Sakristan was bad but Oxygen is now probably the second worst BL this year (after Sakristan).

I agree, this show is under rated. I haven't watched episode 2 yet but episode 1 was great.

At this rate, I am probably going to watch more Pinoy BL than Thai BL this year LOL. I am in love with My Day and Gameboys is my top #1 BL this year and it is in my list of top 5 best BLs ever.

I have also heard good things about Gaya sa Pelicula. I need to watch it. So many BLs!!!!! My friends also have recommended hook up and everyone is talking about Quaranthings.

You need to give it a 12/10 so we get it to finally go up to 9.0 LOL
It is very impressive. I was a bit shocked myself.

What this tells us is that this show is the equivalent of what one would call in regular mainstream media shows as a "highly acclaimed" show.

Another impressive number is the number of views. The first episode has already raked up 1.5 Million views. I think that is also impressive considering the amount of effort that was put on the marketing of the show (almost 0) and the fact that it was at one time going up against some really BIG competition like The Shipper, Still2Gether and Hello Stranger.

I think that if you are a fan of the BL genre and haven't watched this show you should do yourself a favor and watch it. It is that good.

IKR? We should tell MDL that we want to rate things at 11/10!

Well, I actually looked at all the rankings across all of MDL.

Gameboys is the #1 ranked BL from the Philippines, #1 ranked drama overall (BL or hetero) from the Philippines, and the #3 OVERALL top ranked BL across the entire MDL database.

Those are already impressive numbers. The only two BLs that are ranked higher are The Untamed (is it even a BL?) and History 3 Trapped....

At #4 is one of my favorite Thai BLs, He's Coming to Me. :)
