Your review is absolutely hysterical and to me funnier than the series as a whole.I am a fan of Earth and Mix,…
Awww... thank you!

I know what you mean. I can get on board with Thai lakorns, and enjoyed the campness of shows like To Sir, With Love. But here, the concept and humour both owe to the Japanese original, and you can't import it to Thailand without making the right modifications to the script. Alas, all the changes they did make were all the wrong ones: such as, killing off Ossan's wife. Why???

Review The On1y One
I love the characters and the acting (and everything about Andy Chen - it's probably clear I'm obsessed), which…
They just announced there'd be no season 2 last week. (As I predicted, I'm sorry to say.)

I personally prefer PJ and New as actors, but Leon is also very good. I don't think colourism/racism is adressed…
Thank you. I appreciated this insight.

Well, I got actual messages from MDL mods saying my comment was "offensive" and "derogatory" -- so they actually reported my comment. Ironically, they have deleted none of the racist comments that I have reported to them over the past year, which tells you something! I'm done with these people.

Just to say, I did not delete the entirely innocuous comment above. The mods/admins of MDL did.

Fantasies and fetishes aren't synonymous. Fantasies, the ones in the drama, are a natural part of human sexuality.…
All very well. But, at the risk of repeating myself, I did not use the word "fetish" in my comment, and, as I have said, I have no problem with the fact that BLs are predominantly produced and consumed by straight women. So, I really don't understand why your comment -- the contents of which do not in any way relate to what I have said -- is directed at me.

Also, words can have more than one meaning, one pejorative, and the other not. "Homosexuality" was once in the DSM too. And the word "fetish" is still used to refer to the oaths and religious practices of several indigenous West African cultures, to whom such a reductionist approach to a word would surely be offensive?

I'm sorry, I don't know whether you intended the message for me or not. But I haven't used the word 'fetish' anywhere in my comment.

Also, from the OED: "Fetish: An object of excessive or irrational devotion or admiration, or of obsessive interest; an obsession." In this context, objects needn't be mere physical objects, but also abstract ones. Here is an example cited by the OED: "It challenges something that might be even more powerful than capitalism, and that is the fetish of centrism—of reasonableness."

So, insofar as a fantasy involves obsessive thought about particular power/sexual dynamics between gay men, I don't see why it can't be described as a 'fetish'. But that is not an issue I wish to get into here.

You know: you often make me feel as if I'm not alone! I am one of the few people who quit this show and left a somewhat negative review of it!

Oh, go away. You neither like the review, nor the people here. Who asks for you to hang out and stalk us? If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

Echo chamber? Rich, coming from you, who ignores the fact that most people agree with you, and yet you come with pitchforks and torches at any person who disagrees with you.

You must be really fun at parties. Can't wait to never hang out with you. I'm done being civil. Now piss off.

EDIT: I see that you keep going and editing your messages in the light of replies below. Nice! Very honest of you! But I'm now going to block you, because I really can't stand you anymore.

Well said! The uke did nothing but be passive throughout -- a veritable hothouse flower -- and the seme did nothing but stand on the side, look longingly, and get stabbed for his love. 🙄

The writer, I see, is a straight woman, and it makes sense that this is a straight woman's fantasy -- nothing wrong with that, of course, more power to her! -- but let's call a fantasy a fantasy. Mills & Boons? Maybe. Line of Beauty? Certainly not!

Now, I'll wait for that stupid person to stalk me, and respond to this comment with some insufferable, insipid, and inane reply.

I'm not white myself. So I see where you're coming from. But I honestly think they were trying to touch upon something vital there with the casting of a white actor speaking Thai. I'm not Thai, so I don't want to overstep my bounds. But if a similar casting were set within my milieu, I should think it was trying to say something about colourism within my (Asian) community. The discussion about blue eyes and blonde hair in the last episode seemed to me significant -- but again, I'd be overstepping my mark if I ventured into guessing why.

All said, I do take your point. It's not as if white people don't have enough visibility already!

Thank you! ❤️

You're right about this character. I had left a comment on Mike's review, basically agreeing with his points, but guess who came crawling to reply within 5 minutes? This person just seems to be refreshing the review pages over and over again to basically troll people who didn't like the show. I can only imagine how constipated a person must be to be this humourless!

Well, well, well. This was certainly the best BL to come out of Thailand in a long time (if not ever). I'm so glad I watched it.

Its greatest strengths were its direction, cinematography, and its grunge aesthetic, which it proudly owned. Plus, unlike most of the comments below, I didn't think the show was at all realistic, which I see as a strength, rather than a weakness. Intrusions of realism would have taken attention away from the main focus of the show, which is the emotional vagaries and prevarications of four clueless teenagers. They live in their own heads -- and, now, in their phones -- and the outside world might as well not exist. Though I'm 20 years older than these characters, I appreciated this contemporary insight into their solipsistic world, however unrealistic.

Most of all, the contradictions and complexities of young love are what resonated with me the most. Love is quick to form and quick to break when you're young, and I'm still young enough to remember that well. The characters were set up for "a sentimental education", and they all received it, most of all Bua, whose arc, from playing with Chian's feelings, to realising that fact through his experience with Baabin, was very well done. The fact that Leon is an amazing actor, a gesture of whose eyes could convey ten sentences, made the show for me. (I also feel, with his casting, the show is attempting to say something about the politics of race in Thailand, and about colourism in the country, but I do not know enough about the matter to say more.)

Of course, the show was not without its weaknesses. The script was uneven, congealed here, dilated there, and apart from Four4Mod, the characters were all underwritten, esp. Bua and Baabin. Indeed, if Bua's feels less so, it's thanks to Leon. It is due to the thinness of the script that, I think, at least one half of the ending feels, to many of us, unearned. I don't care for psychological motives as the main driver of a character's actions, and so, I thought Bua's parental "background" was a rather poor explanation for any of his behaviour. Besides, he ended up having the greatest integrity among the whole lot, with his decisive confrontation of Baabin and his apology to Chian, which tells you why one ought not psychologise characters too much. In any event, the characters deserved a better script. That said, the fact that, when I began the show, the last thing I expected was to fall for Bua, tells you what an unpredictable ride this show was, even if the ending feels as if you could have predicted it all along.

I'm very sad that this show is over, not least because I have nothing left on my BL queue to watch after this.

Ah, my friend! Thank you! I feel seen, and less alone in this world of universal commendation! :)

Also, you're so right about the make-up. To go by the amount of paint they apply to these stars, Farrow & Ball must have multiple branches in Seoul.

I cannot imagine any gay man, and most sensible people, would do anything other than laugh at this show. But then, you can see how po-faced people get from the comments section of my own page, which has left me dispirited and exhausted. You're good to ignore them. I will too, from now on.

Oh my god, thank you for letting me know! (If that is the case, that explains so much.) I've become so dispirited by this whole page now that I almost thought about removing the review. I'm glad I didn't.

What a waste of my energies!

Thanks, as always, for your support.
