I think what's so great about the FL is the way she moves her eyes gives a lot of insight into personality and what she's thinking. The ML's face is very expressionless. That might be by intent but I think its just too flat.

To give their abusive parent multiple chances at redemption. Because the alternative - that they are unloveable, is soul destroying.
