Something happened in the past, probably related to that childhood bully, which made him drop out after middle school. (The episode where he drags her out of the bar, and KH tells those bullies off.) He is an orphan to boot. Whereas she is highly educated with two degrees and probably has the conventional kind of family.
The gang consists of outcasts: he's always been an orphan while (I guess) she was considered weird for writing poetry and being lost in her own world. As you know, the village people are not kind. You can totally expect how many tongues would wag if they were to get together (and keep wagging for the rest of their lives).
You may have noticed how he keeps listening to audio books. It's his way of trying to be at par with her. He didn't feel worthy enough to go into the library, a place of learning and the learned. His insecurities are coming in the way and she's unsure if he feels the same way since they have been friends for so long.
It's really sad when you look at their situation.

Honestly, the Grandpa did his daughter proud. His ostensibly tactful dancing around the issue of KH's background was such a low blow. It would have been better if he'd just told her as is and not been a hypocrite. Or better yet, said nothing at all. He was both condescending and patronising. She is so much of a bigger person than most.

I was just playing around. While you have given me the right advice, the OP explains exactly why the drama may not have lived upto their expectations. The OP has similar tastes to myself, hence, my disappointment, LOL. It's not a negative comment, just a critique. I am glad that you are enjoying the drama. Thank you for your reply. 😊 I am pretty much determined to enjoy it since it has some actors I like who don't always get meaty roles. Perhaps, I, too, would have quickly dismissed this drama had it not been for the cast. I also have a soft corner for the female actress playing the mother since she did a good job in a drama I had previously watched. Watching that drama was one of my earliest experiences of watching a Chinese drama exceeding 24 episodes, LOL.

Don't say so please! 🙈 Dang, I have been waiting for this one... I guess I will have to temper my expectations. Some of my favourite CDrama actors/actresses are in this one. I have liked the actress for the widowed sister ever since I saw her performance in a mini drama. I was hoping for yet another masterpiece like the Hilarious Family. *sigh*
