Great post. I agree with it all.I just want to add that what I love about the show is the contradictions between…
ah, i seriously couldn't agree more, you said it so beautifully! even in real life, i feel like it's so rare to see people asking questions openly and comfortably when they're not familiar with something.
I've seen the first two episodes over the weekend but for the first time in a while, I wasn't sure how to describe my first impressions. There are so many things that I loved, and even with some imperfections here and there, I just loved how I felt after finishing the episodes.
What a lot of dramas, this year especially, wanted to do seems to be breaking all the drama stereotypes or playing with the cliches to let the viewers "know" they're not following the same old story premises. But this drama actually does so, without being aggressive about how "refreshing" or "different" it is. It just is that refreshing. It is a story about people trying to get to know themselves while also simply dealing with all the burdens that come with being an adult.
They took the standard story of a rich, black-sheep son of the family but without making him act spiteful, and letting him take out his frustrations on everyone else (especially the FL which is the case in k-drama land... well too often to say the least). He's taking the accountability for his actions, even when he can easily justify them due to his intentions. He's patient with the FL, no matter how awkward and unexpected their interactions are, and he never acts before he thinks. Rather than prejudice and baseless assumptions, he's filled with curiosity but only when he sees worth and importance in things. He waits to get his answers, and he makes the FL feel comfortable enough to be open about her thoughts. Even though he's not #1 at what he does, he accepts where he is right now while not giving up on reaching his goal. However, he doesn't make us feel bad for him for not doing it earlier. Why? Because he also doesn't pity himself. He just works hard and wants to lead a simple life.
How the screenwriter deals with the FL is equally interesting. She's clearly not leading an easy life either, but not for a second does she doubt her decision to keep doing what she does. Even though it is not easy, she knows what it is that brings her joy and what makes her feel complete. One thing that irks me easily is that writers are usually too lazy to deal with FL's actual dreams and goals. Somehow, they end up being relevant as long as the ML is not in the picture. But I think there's a lot of beauty in OMJ for how she deals with this. She's confident in who she is, what her opinions and outlooks are, but is sadly also aware of the fact that through life we deal with unfairness. Even in such situations, the only times she takes a step back is when she knows she'll make two steps forward. She's had a lot of experiences in both her private and personal life, and it has taught her that things will not always work her way, but that doesn't mean she shouldn't try.
Sorry for such a long comment but.. I'm honestly looking forward to the next few episodes.
Is Kang Han Na really in a main role?In the trailer it doesn't look like it.
this is a really late response but yes, she is! i still have 7 more episodes to go so i can't guarantee her screentime will remain as good in the rest of the eps, but based on what i've seen so far all of her scenes were amazing and her role is pretty important. out of her dramas i've seen so far, this is by far her best one and she's getting a chance to showcase her skills a lot.
tbh it's really unfortunate that this drama doesn't have more MDL viewers, i'm really curious to see more theories on how the story will develop because it's definitely been somewhat unpredictable so far
Before I invest time here. How are the acting skills of the Main leads? I don't know any of them, but the FL seems…
I can't say much about the FL since I'm not personally familiar with most of her work but Im Siwan is generally regarded as one of the best idol actors (though he's primarily an actor now and not so much an idol) and imo, he was phenomenal in Misaeng. I'm not sure what he's like in romance dramas but he definitely has the basic skills down along with a natural charm. As for the FL, my best friend is a huge fan. She once told me she didn't like her acting much before Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung but that her opinion completely changed after seeing her in that drama. Tbh now that I look at her MDL profile, it seems that most of her work is poorly rated so I guess that overwhelming criticism she's facing might not be entirely based on her actual acting skills but poorly executed projects. Either way, I'll try to come back to this comment after EP1 because I'm also looking for a good watch after Start Up and see if I can help more since this definitely seems like the most interesting choice out of the dramas which are about to air.
I loved the new rating system. 8.0 is a great score for a drama like this. It's 08 out of 10, people, that's freaking…
you're right! both 7 and 8 should be seen as pretty good ratings, our choices range from 1-10 for a reason. and a lot of shows on here do have unrealistic ratings..
i honestly hope that khn and ksh will reunite in a drama, next time as (actual main) leads and with a well-written…
sidenote: also i'd like to recommend designated survivor for anyone who liked kang hanna's acting in this drama. she did a phenomenal job there and she had a really well-written role (which she deserves). or if you are into variety shows (and want to have a good laugh altho it seems SU itself couldn't be a bigger joke), please check out her running man appearances!! she's the guest with most appearances in the show history and i'd say for a reason. her personality off-screen is so charming. she's often described as "the one who pretends to be normal but she's not". i'm sure her scenes will bring out a smile on anyone's face!
on a lighter note why isn't the rating going down ?
i think it takes some time to update and a lot of people will probably rate it once they finish the final ep today or in the next few days. but honestly i'm weirded out by the stats, it seems that almost 30% people who rated the drama gave it a 10
i honestly hope that khn and ksh will reunite in a drama, next time as (actual main) leads and with a well-written plot. both deserved a better project than this, especially with how skilled and hard-working they are. they seemed to get along well in the interviews despite the fact their characters didn't have many interactions. "the dimple couple" sounds pretty cute too
dal mi keeps saying her wants to becomes the next steve jobs and goes and drops out of college. all the successful…
u explained this perfectly! i honestly thought that she’d try to pull off her dad’s idea but with a modern twist when the show first started, yet her passion basically came down to outperforming her sister
i'll probably skip a lot of the scenes but i think it's finally time to catch up and see what happened in the past few episodes. based on the comments, i feel like the greatest plot twist the writer could've pulled off was to stop treating wij as a cameo and give hjp a happy ending (which really... really isn't that hard) but it also seems like that didn't happen :) i guess i'm setting myself for even more disappointment but i miss my faves.
in the last behind the scenes video on yt, they said they're currently editing season 2!! ah i wish we could skip these next few months until the drama starts, but i'm so happy we're getting so much content online. most dramas have behind the scenes videos but hp1 videos feel like mini episodes and are as entertaining as the actual drama. honestly, i feel so grateful that we can see how the process looks like, it made me feel even more connected to the cast. all of them worked so hard on season one.
