there's a very simple c drama explanation for why Xiao Jue cannot recognise her previous identity. in episode…
That's how it really is. They hadn't met in years. He just assumes she'd had a growth spurt. And even though there isn't a scene where they meet during his father's death in the book, it can be explained that he was too devasted to notice whether his childhood classmate was 5'3" or 5'10" in height lol.

I don't know why people are so surprised by the quality when the trailers themselves showed that it wasn't going to be all that. Maybe it's because my expectations weren't that high from the beginning so I'm not much disappointed. Now if you are craving a well made drama to feel better, come rewatch The Double like I'm going to XD

I really like this adaptation. It's not excellent but it's not bad either. Fitting 245 chapters in 36 episodes is bound to make it fast paced. It could've been better but it's good enough for a light watch. The action scenes are clearly very well made.

she magically survived a fatal injury and was magically discovered at the bottom of a canyon in a pitch black…
Bla bla bla let people have fun. This is a Chinese fantasy story originally having a rebirth plot. There are bound to be some plot holes once they change that. I don't know what you were expecting. Sure it's not very high-quality but it's fun for novel readers to see it play out. Just drop the show if you don't like it.

The first episode was epic! I love how they changed things up to remove the rebirth. In the novel Xiao Jue didn't have any enmity with He Yan/He Rufei but here he does! That's bound to make things more interesting.

This was quite nice if you bear through the first few episodes. The main leads' relationship was pretty frustrating with all the misunderstandings but the other characters make up for it. Grandmas, Ya En, Jinyu and Kai Kai were so dear to me. The dialogue was very natural and super funny. I unexpectedly cried almost every episode because of the supporting characters (Kai Ran's confession scene and grandma's diary T_T). This is definitely worth a watch! 7.5/10.

btw is there a reason why the # of watchers is so high? I don't think the leads have large international fanbases
The novel is very popular and the author is famous. All their works are highly sought IPs.

Isn’t it basically Mulan? Don’t come at me, folks. Sincerely just asking.
It's Mulan but mostly focused on a revenge and politics plot. The focus isn't on the fact that she's disguised as a man. In her original life, it might've been. In this one with a new identity it's about how she gets betrayed by her family, and how the ML discovers it and helps her take revenge. Also there is a lot of backstory for the ML as well.

I want to watch this drama, but the author is quite problematic. She’s colorist and shows strong disdain for…
I mean that is to be expected from a story set in the ancient times. Nobles stayed under parasols thus they were fair and poor people who toiled in the sun were tanned. That's why fair skin was seen as better. And that stigma has continued to this day even though the meaning has been lost, as you know. As for ethnic minorities, like the tartars, they were depicted as other enemy nations, separate from the Hans. Because that's how it really was in ancient times. They were less civilised nomads who were considered "barbarians". I do agree that racism and discrimination is unacceptable in this day and age because every majority and minority is equally civilised and educated. But during those time there was a solid logic behind it. And the discrimination and colourism in the books are not the writer's personal opinion but rather the mindset of the characters set in the ancient era story. I have read most of the books by this author and they are brilliant. I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on them because of simple misunderstandings.
