I don't know how I could miss this little gem last year and I am really thankful that I decided to catch up with it after seeing LJH in Just Between Lovers. I found this drama delightful to watch as it was light and funny but with a logical plot nevertheless. I would say that it's my favourite role of Nam Goong Min up to now and he fully deserved the Daesang Award as best actor at the end of the year drama awards ceremony. I actually enjoyed all the cast who really seemed to get along wonderfully also when not shooting the drama. I highly recommend it when wanting to watch something clever whilst relaxing, laughing and laying back for a few hours which literally fly by.
I had high expectations for this drama with Jin Dong as last year his two dramas Surgeons and The first half of my Life were brilliant. Unfortunately this one didn't satisfy me as much as it went downhill in the last 10/15 episodes with many clichès and sometimes unreasonable turn of events. Both the main leads Cheng Hao and Luo Yue who seemed extremely clever, independent and detached suddenly had a complete turnaround in their personalities and became weak and whiny and to me it seemed like watching a completely different drama. Luckily the writers were able to give a decent closure to the whole story but by then it had lost quite a lot of appeal and logic for me. My biggest complaint however is the exaggerated amount of product placement which was very evident and sometimes quite bothersome too. I hope this won't become a trend in modern day Chinese dramas.
The main actors don't end up together, but I think they remain in love with each other in their hearts. It's a truly great drama, worth watching in my opinion.
Fantastic drama and a great way to start the new year together with Prison Playbook. Even though dealing with a widely used plot of revenge the writers here were brilliant and gave the viewers so many unexpected twists and turns and most of all great cliffhangers at the end of each episode. Besides the writing everything else here was flawless, acting, directing and incredibly beautiful instrumental OST which contributed to enhancing the most important parts of the story. I am so pleased to be rating my second completed Korean drama in 2018 with a 10.
Thanks for this updated article. I have been a fan of Kimura Takuya's oldest dramas and I agree that he is a brilliant actor. Unfortunately I haven't watched any of his recent dramas but I plan to watch Bodyguard when available. I hope he will be able to stay famous as he ages as it seems that there could be age discriminating factors amongst the Japanese public.
The ones I am hoping to see again soon out of this list are certainly Yoon Eun Hye who has been away for too long, and my all time favourites Song Hye Kyo, Hwang Jung Eum and Jun Ji Hyun.
Great show for me too...I mostly appreciated the fantastic acting skills of all the cast and of the main leads in particular. The story itself was a little less appealing for me as I found it too tragic and sad most of the time.
I agree that Chinese dramas are getting better and better sometimes even overtaking the quality of Korean dramas. My Kdrama favourites of 2017 were definitely Queen for Seven days, Saimdang, Chicago Typewriter and Prison Playbook (if it is considered of 2017) wheras for Cdramas the King's Woman, The first half of my life and Surgeons. I also miss good J dramas but I started to watch Quartet (2017) and it seems pretty good.
This was a very well acted melodrama which I really liked. What I appreciated most was the fact that there was growth in all the characters in one way or the other and the grief they were all going through felt very realistic. Thanks to this drama I discovered Lee Jun Ho who did an amazing job with his character. I will keep an eye out for his future and past projects from now on. Now I desperately need to watch something light and fluffy and Chief Kim seems the perfect choice.
So, so, so very happy for all the Goblin awards!! All of them greatly deserved as it is an unforgettable drama that will become a classic in the future. I am only disappointed for the Best Saeguk award which in my heart goes to Queen for Seven Days. I haven't seen Weightlifting Fairy or Strong Woman which probably shows my age difference with most of the viewers of MDL. ;-)
I started watching dramas many years later but my picks of 2007 out of these would definitely be Coffee Prince and Time Between Dog and Wolf (and I have also seen 9 end 2 outs).
Wow, this is the first drama I completed in 2018 and I am definitely giving it a 10 because it was absolutely awesome. The writers here were amazing as they managed to create the same type of 'familiar' atmosphere of the Reply series, where the viewers really felt part of the community and didn't want to let go when the story ended. Every single character in this drama was perfect with his/her flaws and it was interesting to see how they all had changed in one way or another at the end. Even though the episodes were longer than usual it was so much fun to watch what happened in that prison, some moments were hilariously funny and others quite sad. I can't wait to see what these writers will come up with next. This is highly recommended.
Thanks for this great article on Asadoras! These are the only Jdramas I have been watching for the last couple of years as I couldn't find any evening dramas that caught my interest. I totally agree that they are interesting and very involving. I started out with Massan which is my all time favourite, then I watched Hanako to Anne, Mare, Asa ga Kita and I am taking my time through Beppin san at the moment. All of them have beautiful stories, with lovely settings and great acting and I highly recommend them.
The main theme of this drama focusing on judges and on how they have a hard time in making judgements was a good idea. However, I did not appreciate how they dedicated most of the drama in solving a very important case/mistery and then suddenly in the last four episodes romance came up with only a few judgements to give on the side. I wish the writers had mixed the two genres better and in any case some aspects of the main story were also rather unrealistic. This should have been written much better because of the good cast.
