ππ» It's light and fun to watch. I always enjoyed fish out of water type of a deal - new person in a small town or a new person in a old group of friends. Watching them slowly adjust and others open up is interesting. It also provides a perfect opportunity for characters' development since both the new person gets affected by the older one, and the new environment gets affected by the new.
ππ» Im Si Wan - Dae Beom is adorable. I am extremely curious about his hardships and past. This is what I kind of wanted to see for Yeo Reum, slowly introduce me to what happened to get and not bombard me with information day one. I like how we see where he is now, and with few flashbacks and side conversation slowly uncover what happened in the past to lead him to this place.
ππ» Visually speaking - love it. It's not over the top artistic, but it has many beautiful wide shots worth screenshotting. Sometimes shows try so hard to be pretty, it's actually distracting. there were dramas that literally made me feel motion sick because they tried to be so "artsy" with how they filmed scenes. Here we have a great balance - scenes focusing on the plot progression are more simple, while the narrated ones that deal more with internal aspects of the characters give more of a beautiful and nostalgic feeling.
The questionable:
πΆ Characterization of everyone and the pacing. There is no real proper development, everyone just changes from one scene to the other, and while at times there is one scene or situation that TECHNICALLY could be viewed as the reason, in real life ain't no one changes so fast. Especially in a situation when there was a misunderstanding or lack of communication - it's hard to admit to yourself you were wrong and switch your ways. But here, everyone just does. They have 12 episodes... shouldn't they get more even pacing. One of the reason I enjoy slice of life is that gradual smooth progression, but I don't feel like we get it here.
πΆ Lee Yeo Reum's drinking. for me is kind of does not make much sense, since it's not really grounded in anything? The first time was fine and I completely bought it - she never got drunk, always had to make sure she is in a good condition to work etc. She always controlled herself, so when she finally let herself enjoy things and decided to drink, she did not know when to stop and got so drunk. But drinking her sorrows and anger in a completely different thing. They never presented her as someone who would do that, so it just did not fit the character for me. and focusing more or less the whole episode on it... was exhausting and it's making me dislike FL, when I did like her in episodes 2-3.
πΆ I'm still salty about episode 1 because many things now don't really hit as hard as they should. Like her saying "I thought everyone hated me" < for me this line was not earned writing and directing wise. Logically speaking I can add in my head how her life must have been based on these few interactions, but it's not what the drama itself showed me, it's what I added. And even what happened in the town gives conflicted messages - people did dislike her and were not happy for her to be there. Most of them were annoyed or completely indifferent, and only Dae Beom showed actual positive attitude. So it's like it's just her misconception that people disliked her. Was the disliked reasonable? No. But it was there. And since they moved so quickly from everyone not being happy she is here, to most of people helping her and being friendly... that line just feels flat. Because we did not really experience with Yeo Reum her hardships.
λλ μκ° λΆμλκ° < this damn, we are all poor compared. We are either slaves to work or dramas π
Seol Hyun improved quite a lot in her acting. I remember her in Orange Marmalade, and oof she must have worked hard to get where she is now skill wise.
The way she just mixed all the pages he had put on the corresponding books omg. girl... damn. my heart broke. I love me a calm, patient and well organized man.
The yellow hair dude is so annoying. The teen girl is also annoying, but she is a teen so like... that's expected π
HE IS PRACTICING GREETING HER, HOW WHOLESOME! ππππ
AND THE WHOLE UMBRELLA SCENE ππππππ
This episode confirmed that the overall mood and quality of the show is more of what was shown in episode 2, and episode one was just a poor falstart.
Not to mention that random "getting sued, life of a firefighter" scene closer to the end - I am sorry, but I don't know that dude, don;';t know the context of that situation - it was a random bullshit scene that had no place in that episode at all.
LOVE Bong Do Jin.
LOVE Gong Myung Pil, but he is the bad guy inside man Β―\_(γ)_/Β― Why the fuck he would not get killed? Why the fuck he would say in all cryptic "you should have ran".
I would not be mad even if it ended on what we've got here. But I would for sure appreciate another season. Apparently 2nd is not confirmed tho π
Same for Shi Eun, his fighting was the most entertaining to watch
Here's the thing -its either fine to judge the opening episodes both negatively and positively or it's not fine to do either.
Don't know how the criticism looked like past few days, but right after the episodes aired majority of people criticizes just these episodes and i did not really see people saying the whole show will for sure be bad, or that make any judgements about the drama as a whole. These were specific criticisms about mostly episode one ONLY.
Granted, there might have been some new comments since i last checked. I just hope people don't go around strawman others' comment.
We have cases that we have seen more or less in other shows. We have the most popular and basic investigation techniques - it's like a interrogation class on the most basic level.
Then there is a generic villain who plots shits up at the end of each episode.
But it's fun, and easy to watch and that's why I enjoy it. I like how I don't have to use my brain much and can chill and have fun with the characters. I like the dynamics between them, I would not even mind a small romance (tho would prefer one between Do Jin and Seol).
Overall, it's basic and easy to digest in the best way possible.
You have no idea if people who complain are teens or adults, what are their backgrounds and experiences, so dismissing their opinions as "they probably young and know nothing about life" is painfully closeminded and egocentric behavior.
I gave you more attention that you deserve from me anyway, taking into consideration your personal attacks towards me in the previous replies Β―\_(γ)_/Β― So feel free to reply if you won't, but I won't engage with you anymore.
I'm more than happy to have a dissuasion with others who disagree, but when someone opens their take with "you are insane", I see no reason to give them more time of my day.
I don't have issues with them giving her bad clothes. I have issues with them giving her the most stereotypically comical bad clothes that are associated with timid and sky nerd girls in pop culture. They literally could have out her in more plain clothes and it would be fine. My issue is who they went out of their ways to emphasize how "pathetic" the character is by using the stereotypes, when it was unnecessary.
"It is also very likely her relationship with her boyfriend" < AND THIS IS EXACTLY THE ISSUE. the fact you had to say: "it is also very likely" and not "her relationship with her boyfriend" means they did not explore the relationship enough for it to be a considered one of the reasons she left. So why even bother giving us the 5 minutes of the relationship when it had no depth and the same could have been achieved if they only focused on the workplace related stuff.
You add more to the story than they actually showed. I'm all for not showing everything on screen, but if I basically have to imagine most of her life before she decided to do 180 and leave, that's just ridiculous.
As for the second part, you are fine with the concept, I dig into presentation of it. That's what bothers me. The change in moos is soooooo drastic between episode 1 and 2, her change of behavior and outlook on life seems just unreal. Because they did a poor job in transitioning between what happened in episode 1 and 2. In paper it makes sense, how they presented it bothers me.
I don't think we will agree on it, since I feel like you focus more on the general context, while I have issue with how they out these ideas in writing and directing.
1. You went straight to personal attacks on your first reply
2. You twisted the meaning of my words and then got offended by what your brain created in your head.
When I said "Showed how the boss wanted to sleep with her, and started to treat her poorly after she said no" I meant show me the context of how it happened. I wanted them to show me in more depth her complex situation at work. Which in my mind was for example would be showing what happened in more linear way and adding more scenes of how her boss' attitude towards her changed first after she rejected him, and then after she caught him taking bribes. I don't need more than said message she got.
Instead of trying to making it a got you moment, small plot twist, they should show from the start how it all happened. Her being treated in a decent way, then the message exchange, her rejecting him, and him starting to treat her bad, no one having any reactions nor trying to stand up for her.
If I was making this show I would not include the boyfriend plotline, I would make her mom dead from the start, and not give a random one scene of her dying as if any of the viewers created any connection to this random person and TRULY focus on her work and how she did her best, live focusing on the work only, how she started to feel like her life is meaningless because of that, how she has no people around her, no memories and her days are all the same.
But they decided to pile up all the bad "relatable" things on FL without really diving into any. That's for me is a cheapo way of creating sympathy.
Sometimes less means more, and I feel like they they went quantity over quality and because of that everything felt rushed and empty and I could not connect to it at all.
But they decided to not explore any of the issues presented. basically went quantity over quality Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
