Madam fu/xie had to live with her husband, that's society's dictates. I think the reason she doesnt want to go to our MC is because she doesnt want them involved anymore with the Fu. She's trying to distance herself and the Fu family because they're just going to cause trouble. She is trying to be brave by first making the steps by divorcing him. She has been planning. Money has been hidden away. But she wants it to be done in a way that society would accept and that would not cause trouble to her daughter. I also agree in one of the comments saying that killing her off was only successful because no one expected it from Fu, who's really the definition of a coward and bully.
