Lanxiang's birthday celebration was one of the saddest celebrations in dramas.
(Jinqi by the wishing tree was very pretty)
She hasnt seen her parents for a long time.
The last time she got completely drunk was when she resolved the Lin family poisoning. But I guess her sad emotions are much nearer in the surface during Lanxiang's birthday that she cannot risk it.
Both actors were great. The way their faces and body expressed their emotions. When the Jinqi mentioned the history of the retreat house, you can see lanxiang physically and emotionally withdrawing. Jinqi tried to remove the distance by physically going near her. His face too. You can see the sadness in his as well: when you know your loved one is hurting but she wouldn't tell you and you don't want to pry too much. You want to comfort them but you don't even know why and how.
Hiring the opera for her, was a nice move of Jinqi. It really brought a smile to Lanxiang's face.

Then the way, Lanxiang is just able to connect the dots. She knows Prince Han would rebel, it's just a matter of when. And the little information she heard of just clicked. She was able to immediately delegate their tasks.
I'm glad the people who knew her knows that this is dire.

It was a bit obvious from the early episodes that they were not going to follow the novel. Still i liked the drama and the novel. Each had their charm.

Im currently watching ATC now, loving it too.

Im not sure if I'll say ATC is more realistic, maybe grounded? Or is that the same? Haha

I started watching the Heir, while waiting for ATC episodes.

I have a head canon that if the shen family was not executed, she may have hopefully met zxt, they become friends, she would be able to stop that affair, teach/encourage her to learn to read and be better version. Haha

Yes! I love the marriage of convenience or arranged marriage trope, because you'll slowly see them get to know each other and eventually fall in love.

A commenter pointed out that lanxiang's flaw is that she's too self sufficient, that it would be nice for her to have someone she can totally rely on. I also think that she can be stubborn and petty sometimes. But that's just my opinion.

But i also like your point, that the drama meant for her to be story teller.
