I understand for ML. But SML is like a narcissist. He is very realistic to me. He prioritizes his own gains over any so-called love interest. He likes to manipulate and he is so arrogant that he believes that FL is oblivious of all his tricks. He had not been physically violent with her yet (on his own), but I am sure that he will find a way to trap her into is bed-chamber very soon ( he already did). I agree, SML wants to make his concubine out of her because he understood that his soon-to-be bride is has scheming as he is, and she will allow that. For me SML is the worst because he becomes more and more physically and mentally abusive as he feels attraction for FL.
On the contrary, ML is a general in a mission. He tried to kill a target who spoiled his operations. But, as soon as he got attracted to that target/FL, he became her protector. He almost got killed several times to save her life ( jump in the well, fight at the temple...). I can understand why ML had to supress his emotions since childhood to survive slavery, war, starvation, torture... But, now that he is starting to feel love, he is becoming more and more human and less and less a killing machine.
So to be honest, I see 1 victim of slavery on the road for redemption, and 1 son of a slave-master who is seeking power to continue to abuse in the name of a so-called love which is more like obsession to me.

If it was in real life I would never cross words with someone who stabbed (ficticiously) me, let alone get close to him. But this is fiction in a time of genocide, slavery and war. I don't know what I would do, and trust me you might not know what you would do in such circumstances. People put a different face when facing death. I can understand the heroin. Episode 9 SML loses his opportunity with FL : SML lost FL's admiration / love after he killed the old couple.
Episode 10 FL starts to like ML : After that ML performed the sword dance when he was drunke in front of the emperor. FL's glare at him changed at that point of time. So I would say that she started liking him from then on.
Episode 10 ML cares for FL unconsciously : ML holds her hand while they were followed. She burned the letter. Then ML put the responsibility of all the death onto her, and says : " why did I not Kill you"
Episode 11 ML is jealous without knowing it : He came to return the clay cat but learns that FL is going on a trip with SML. So he keeps her clay cat and tells her : "You said you wanted to leave, but you couldn't bear to part with Pei Yan."
=> I would say that he started liking her at that point of time. There is a switch at episode 10/ 11 for the Leads. At the end of episode 11 FL teased ML and ML smirked.
