He was sad about his ambition and his messed up plans.
He was greedy for power and money.

Totally agree. The conman wanted to seduce the famous talented bachelorette of his hometown. Also agree with the schemes and put his hands on the county gold mine.

The night of his dinner, when he did almost rape her. He wanted her to marry him yes I agree. In this era, just spending the night in the same room as a man. this could make that woman the man's concubine.
He especially invited guests to trap Fang Fei and force her to marry him...Or yes to kill herself if things escalated.

Yes, he manipulated Princess Wanning to believe that she was the one who wanted Xue Fang Fei dead. To the point where, Princess Wanning herself took the responsibility to kidnapp Fang Fei and bring her to her donjeon. We know now that SYR wanted to make up with Fang Fei so bad, that he used the elite soldiers army( with the fish talismant) to kill off Duke Su.
The man is so delusional. He thinks that perpetrating murder can make Fang Fei love him back (-__-)

This gigolo used women at his advantage.
Fang Fei could escape because she was smart and loved. But Princess wanning was his big victim.
I could not stand seeing him gaslighting her at her place.
Like: the guy doesn't know when he lies. Pleeeeeaaase !

Technically, she took a fake poison. (If it is as planned with king chen)
So she should have recovered if it was not for her self- stabbing her stomach ?
The girl was obssessed with him and jealous of Jiang Li anyway.

I did not understant Shen Yurong .
He is the mastermind behind Wanning. Indeed, they harmed a lot of people.
But at the same time, he suffers for his actions. He has the most weird personality I have ever seen.
He did so much horrific deeds that I forgot about his father. As well as why althought he made a promess to be a honest state - worker.
At the end of the day he didn't do it. ( -_-)
His mother was his complicite out of greed and ambition, I guess. Despicable.

I was scared for Jiang Li in Wanning's donjeon too.
Don't you think that she puts up with Jiang Li's yelling because Shen Yurong pressured her to do so?
It's confirms SYR 's power over Wanning.

So they had to introduce the family life.
I am so happy they did it. We were waiting for those moments during the show.

Is this drama worth watching ? I have put on hold.
