I stopped at ep 5, I can't with the fake death plot, like wtf was the point of it... no mystery no suspense just straight hey I made a level 9 martial artist fake my death and he couldn't sense me at all. Like didn't even see me changing carriages, and getting on horse etc etc..
I guess it's hard for chinese cinema to go western tv series route where they span over 4+ seasons to fully cover every detail, some just milke it for profits.
Like Game of Thrones, it was a great masterpiece until they ran out of source material but it still spaned over 8 seasons, and audience wouldn't have minded an another season or two if it was good.
Most of the issues you mentioned could've been solved if they just went with 4+ seaons and fully cover those arcs.
Personally, I just started season 2 and I immediately disliked how the fake death plot was handled. Like Fang Xian was such a phenomenal mastermind in the first season and in the beginning of the second 2 he goes to his friend's house to reconnaissance and surveil the enemies. Like what? You knew they all have spies and what not, wouldn't they just kidnap Wan Xing's family and they rightly did so. Is it the same in the novel?
And I agree with the tonal shift of the seaons 2, like the ending of season 1 was so grim and dark and then you see season 2, from crown price to second price making funny comments or joking while you know they've slaughtered a bunch few scenes earlier.
While I liked the intimacy of ML with different female characters, I get that the novel didn't go that route as they usually go for stoic and emotionaless male leads .
If I wanna dive in the novel after season 1, where should I start from in the novel?
Umm okay, the drama and acting is awesome but what's with the weird bg sound effects? Like to create the wow factor or suspense they added way too many unneccasray bg sound effects. FL says something and bammm (bg sound effect).. ML makes a snarky comment .. booommm like mic drop, and everyone is either suprised or confused..
I've watched Story of Yanxi Palace, and there the director didn't employ these werid bg sound effects rather left it to the actors/actresses to make the diagloue heavy on the viewers, it didn't need any other sound effects.
Has anyone noticed this?

I didn't say anything about the current actress shouldn't be FL, I mentioned why one particular isn't and is given a side role. Simple, but why is everyone jumping the gun and hating her so much? Shouldn't that be the question?

Oh my.. I think you can't distinguish between a surgeon and an actress. A surgeon saves lives and a actor/actress is entertaining the audience.

I think I like the drama ending as it portrays the true feeling of Xiangyi, all he wanted was a peaceful end to his suffering. He conquered, vanquished and liberated all his enemies and friends from their internal conflicts and left.
From the get-go it was his only wish which came to accept pretty early in the drama. What I disliked the most was how everyone was hell-bent on forcing him to live on while sacrificing their own life (Xiangyi's master's wife for example). He knew his body better than anyone but they still wanted him badly, he didn't have any love interest either says a lot about his mental state.
While I agree with his friends and disciple wanting him to live, but life is cruel and they should accept the passing of their loved ones. It's okay and that is how this world works.
Xiangyi was content with himself too, isn't that more important huh?
A very beautiful drama with an awesome cast. Reall love Cheng Yi in this one, saw him in a new light. I like how he does his aha moments and little smirks, just wow. New fan favorite.
Although the drama was superb, it's a bit difficult to binge-watch as you lose interest by 30th episode as the detective-ness gets a bit repetative. I skipped from 36 to 39 because I had a feeling there won't be any new info that has already been discussed and I wasn't wrong.
Overall a 9.5 rating, many might dislike the ending but I believe it fits the character very well, you will know from the beginning itself.
No romance and this got 9.5 from me lol who is romance only watcher.

ML's grandma is searching mates for him/ ML's sister-like is searching mates for him(MY) ML is well known in the town for his expertise and helps everywhere/ Same in MY. ML is romantic but takes time to bloom/ Same in MY. ML doesn't want to start a relationship because she is Shangai girl / Beijing girl in MY.
FL just lost a family member/friend in Meet yourself FL comes home for vacation/FL goes to a vacation spot(MY) FL is soft spoken but gets protective/ FL does the same by the end(MY) FL has her family and new neighbors/ FL has new group of friends to grow(MY) FL is very good at her job/ Same in MY FL helps her family business grow/ FL helps the cafeteria grow, even tourism
with all that said the teaser's for ep11 and ep12 look very different. I like how it's picking a different vibe.
And I heard they changed a lot in comparison to the novel. The same reason why seaons 1 was so captivating. smh
We as audience can't connect your love with her while you spend ample amount of time Duo Duo planning and plotting and what not.
