In the end, the ML ended up being the worst betrayer. How could he change his whole personality just like that?…
We could see him being selfish and childish through all the series - so it doesn't surprise me at all. And I am afraid he won't make a better emperor than his uncle was.
The end of the drama: Amai didn't leave to wonder through the world ... she is telling to Wang Qi: Send me a message if there is anything important ;) So we can assume she is going to the place where a messenger can find her - and as everyone who is important for her is still in Jingyang Pass the only reason to go and live outside would be CYQ and we can see her crossing the river which was a border...
So for me such an open ending is a satisfactory one - as viewers have a final say about it.
Well... we couldn't see why and when she could possibly fall in love with Yi Zhi... but he did his best to lose her! We were complaining about lack of his character development - but finally he did change to even worse version of himself! Selfish c..nt with no moral backbone... and this guy was supposed to be a benevolent ruler???
Another loophole... So Nanxia was loosing a war against Beimo... they slaughtered Hans to buy 10 years of peace - now I am wondering how possibly loosing site could keep as hostage Beimo prince - an uncle of young emperor? if they have such a person as hostage there was no need to kill best general to get a peace treaty...
The Novel has an open ending - so its up to reader to decide about what happens next...
oh, that dagger has its own story in the novel :) any way she gave it to him during one of their encounters... he return it back and then snatched it again from her ... she was trying to get it back from him but .... Cui Yan told her that brother throw out that useless piece of metal ofc it wasnt' a truth and CYQ just kept it a token :)
btw. in the novel Amai's parents were time travellers :)
After all that has said at done, in the end, to give the series some (small) credit, they were able to redeem…
You forgot about one small point - she is not going to venture the world as she clearly told to Wang Qi to send her a message if something will happen ;) So she is going to particular place when she can be found when she will be needed in Jingyang pass :)
He became a marquis; he still wants to marry her, but she doesn't want to. He said he can wait for her to decide…
So in the novel Shang Yi Zhi was only Amai's superior during first part of the war - she didn't have any romantic feelings towards him. You can scroll down and find some of my older posts about differences between drama and the novel. She was going through life and death situations with Chang Yu Qing - he could kill her few times but never did - instead saved her life - he told her about his feelings and she confessed to him as well ;) but they were both generals on opposite sides of the conflict and neither of them would betray their country... any way they have made through the war and after peace treaty he is meeting her at the end of the novel :) but it is still an open ending so its up to the reader to decide how the story will be finished.

I would simply just add one more sentence at the end of it: Chang Yu Qing smiled broadly and hurried Zhao Yebai as Amai's silhouette was getting smaller at the end of the road.

She has no other reason in that drama to leave Jingyan Pass then to meet CYQ... his message was very clear - there will be few years of peace and he will wait for her... She couldn't tell in the front of all soldiers and knowing that Emperor and PM are in the city that she will marry him... and practically there was only one part missing to complete their marriage... ;) Also Wang Qi knows clearly where she is going as she told him to send her a message if something would happen - and we can see her crossing the border river...
So... CQ was supposed to get passport from PM for the slaughter of Hans... but if I recall well Amai was able to find that about his travel to Beimo thanks to the document forger she met in the Jingbao town where the war started - that guy made a false passport for Chen Qi... another lovely loophole in the plots
It was a mess. They added the ending to match the one from the novel, but here it just didn't feel like the right…
oh my... when you are thinking they can't screw up more they will still surprise you! Which country is killing their most capable general to get 10 years of peace???

Not exactly - she officially retires from army and the last person she will talk to will be Chang Yu Qing - who is waiting for her outside the capitol gates... She told him she is going to find an old friend, CYQ asked if she loves him - she said she doesn't know - but tells him like: let's go and I will find out and then tell you. And he is watching her riding away and then he takes out her father dagger which was her treasure...
Just quickly run through during tea break... where is she going? apparently Wang Qi knows as he is supposed to send her a message if something happen...

was it too hard to follow up a novel???

thats my interpretation ;)
