I think there's a reason he is acting like that that has not been revealed yet. he could also be trying to paint the image of a gentle scholar to the outside world so that his wife looks like the crazy one. his sore point seems to be whenever zuwen shows up or xiwen asked for a divorce. he might show his authoritative side as the story unfolds

Wild theory but I'm using my knowledge of scheming c novel FLs for this theory. what if the seventh dish she served was supposed to serve two purposes, catch the young Mr He's attention and publicly show the stepmother's shortcomings. she kept emphasising that her son should be ready for the exam so that he doesn't disgrace the family. this makes Ru Yin anxious and she steals the exam question. his dumb sister adds to the problem by seeking He Wensheng's help and he gives it because he is interested in FL. As far as FL knows, the answer should have been by He Wensheng. But what if ML has been following her movements and since she wants to bring the concubine and her children down, he switches the papers and fans the flames so that it reaches the Emperor, which wasn't part of her plan? I think one started it and the other blew it up.
Or, I also think she could have switched He Wensheng's paper with something she wrote herself since she lived with a failed scholar for many years and probably picked up literature and the classics better than him because she was forced to learn it. but on the other hand, only the ML could have had access to the essay that was written 20 years ago

this character has no reason to be happy or cute at this point. any positive expression is hiding bitterness or hate. I don't know a reason she would be genuinely happy? maybe outside of her interactions with her niece. she doesn't even show real affection to her grandmother. this is coming from someone who was not impressed by Chen Duling's acting in projects after TTEOM
Wen Zheng Rong (FL's mother) is a master actor and a half, period. every role I've seen her in she stole the scene. talk about complexity! she has the bearing of an empress, her talents are wasted as the official wife of a scholarly family, adding to the sadness of her fate. the mother in LLTG could never!
